My problem is I lack concept/direction. I can follow tutorials but have no creative ideas to recreate the new skill by creating something else. Anyone got any ideas?

I am having some trouble with using the rendered file of the planet in Tutorial number 52. I follow your instructions in the tutorial, but when I try and bring the file into a new file of AE to do the exploding planet tutorial I cannot work with the file, as it wont let me scrub anything through the time line. I can add things to it, and AE seems to be working well, I just cant seem to get it to work.

if we are doing liquify it should stay in a particular place. EX 1. if am I doing liquify in the hand it should stay in hand it should move in another place.

I just completed this tutorial step by step, and ran into a problem. If you apply the CC Radial Fast Blur to a layer that has a CC Sphere applied, you get a bounding box:

This is because the CC Sphere maps all the layer pixels (including the CC Radial Fast Blur) to the ray traced sphere.
In order to get the desired effect:

You have to perform three additional steps (first, turn off the CC Radial Fast Blur before you precompose):
1) Precompose the layer containing the CC Sphere effect and select "Move all attributes into the new composition" option, and ignore the expression warning for this step.
2) Apply the CC Radial Fast Blur to the precomposed layer.
If you preview your main comp at this point, the planet will rotate due to the duplicate on top, but the fast blur will be stationary. That's because the precomposed layer beneath that contains the CC Sphere is no longer rotating. That looks terrible, so on to the next step.
3) Go to the map layer and then twirl down [Effects:CC Sphere:Rotation:Rotation Y] -- In the expression you will see a warning triangle that represents the warning you got when precomposing. Now you'll edit the expression manually to get your rotation data from the comp that it's actually in. You'll need to change the global 'thisComp' to a different comp.
Change (thisComp.layer("Lava Map"
.effect("CC Sphere"("Rotation Y")
to (comp("venusmap".layer("Lava Map".effect("CC Sphere"("Rotation Y")

Hey there, I love this tutorial, but every time I try to rotate the Lava Map, it rotates in the opposite way of the other 2 Map layers. Anyone know why this is?

This tutorial and effect, hands down without question, was just used in a Discovery Channel special entitled, "The Sun". It was just a program talking about the sun and it's affects on earth and they had shown a dieing earth model and everything from the position of the sun to the planet and where the orange yellow glows took place was exact to this tutorial. Hats off again Andrew to saving the world one amazing effect at a time! Just had to tell ya. Wish I could find a video....

Same as JimK, saw the shot in the Discovery show 'the sun' and it was immediately "Ah! Andrew Kramer!" whilst pointing at the tv like a moron. I had to get back on here and check to make sure and it's pretty much exactly the shot from this tutorial.

This is a great tutorial, but I'm having probs, am using CS4 so have to keep looking for the stuff I need (cursed by the drop down menus)!
I create the planet no problem and the light, but when it comes to the lava layers, the map is in sphere and not flat as it should be, what have I missed?

well mohbaitar . Tutorials like these assume you have basic knowledge of Windows , and After Effects . So of course he's going at a decent speed and that is why they make player controls so you can go back and forth in case you don't understand quick enough . He's working with there own web space as well so you can't expect hours of just one tutorial to explain every little thing he does .

Honest opinion: You go way too fast in your tutorials. You don't explain why your doing what your doing. You just say click that duplicate that move that on top that alpha that...its really confusing. If we were to want to create our own video using this effect, it wouldn't be that easy. We could probably replicate your video by pausing the video every 5 seconds and switching to the AE program to do what you just did, but what were learning is very hard to apply to our individual projects as not every step is not explained in detail. Dont get me wrong your tutorials are amazing. Maybe you should just do a separate video on special tricks and basic tricks, such as shading, mattes, transfer modes, all that good stuff, and focus on that. Ive already watched your basic training, but im talking about more in depth of all the tricks you use, without using effects. Thanks for the good tutorials, just elaborate more.

My CS3 does not have any of the CC presets and i dont know why! No CC Sphere, CC Fast Blur etc! its very annoying! could someone perhaps copy and email them too me - all the CC presets! hireaman@yahoo.com

i have a problem, i downloaded the project and then tryed to open the AEP file in it but it went wrong.. reali wrong its hard to describe how, it just went like... urg>-(! i cant describe it!

i love your tutorials
theres just one thing i think you can do t improve
instead of rotating just the y axis if u rotate the planet so it rotates diagonally it will look a bit better, i tried this and it looked pretty cool

Try to scrub through it, frame by frame, or with the resolution set to half to see if the problem is directly related to the codec.
or maybe the animation codec doesn't work fine with vista.
In my case i dont have this problem
My Specs:
1.5 gb of ram
geforce 6200
amd 4200+ dual core processor 2.20 GHz
windows xp
ps: try to add more ram, because vista uses alot of ram to run itself more than XP

I have a technical question that may/may not pertain to this tutorial, but I'm thinking it has something to do with the Animation Quicktime codec.
I just got a new PC with Vista (I am an idiot), and now in After-Effects, when I export the completed planet animation, it works fine. But when I import it into after effects and attempt to scrub through it, it skips around, like the renderer is taking frames from the future and putting them in random spots, making it really choppy and unappealing.
Is this due to a Quicktime codec, my 64 bit Vista, my Video card (8800 GTS 640MB with up-to-date drivers), or something else? It's really bothering me, because I bought this PC for effects work, and now my favorite program does not work. I didn't seem to encounter the same problem when using the Photo-JPEG setting, so...I guess my question is: Are there issues with the Animation Quicktime codec?
