Hello I am a arhcitecture student!
I am trying to make a video were my feet walks on the ground than dissolve or transition on to a map to show were I am going on my location. How can I do this with after effets. Than zoom out to a map with me like a google map parson on the plan.

Make sure you check the "Apply to new layer" box when you use the Auto-Trace.

The autotrace function will look for clear Lines and stuff in the channel tatt you choose. In this example he chose the alpha channel which means tatt the travle function will look for distinct lines between places with transparency and places without. When the trace thing is finnished, it will make a new layer and apply a mask to it in the same places as the lines. Hope this helped.

HELP ANDREW! Im using cs5 and it is screwing up alot.After i made the lines, i tryed to use the stroke thing you showed, but nothing happened.And also, the lines are just a bunch of dots.When i double click theres a big rectangle and they switch into regular lines.

i was doing this tutorial and when i was at the part of randomizing the masks at 15 minutes it suddenly stopped showing things it only show my bg and [auto traced title] even when i spammed crtl z it didnt fix it what went wrong and how i fix that? i dont want to start all over

i just wanted to post cause i never have b4 but i just wanted to say u are hilarious and u make the greatest tutorials! the only thing is that i cant watch any other after effects tutorials not cause video copilot is TOO awesome! thanks for this one! and i have optical flares and i was watching the promo video and was wondering if u could make a tutorial for the like light room thing...like there was a bunch of gold lights that looked like stadium lights and it looked really cool! if u could that would be great! thanks man!

Brilliant tutorial.
Ok I worked out how to make the 'mask lines' show in Adobe After Effects CS5.

1. click the layer
2. click masks
3. click 'shape...' (it should be right of 'Mask Path')
4. MAKE SURE THAT THE 'RESET TO' TICKBOX IS CHECKED
