I like how you point out that if you'd do this tutorial again, it would look completely different. I feel a lot of other tutorials I've seen people are reading from a script, and you are able to do it pretty free form. It's nice to see when you change your mind midway through rather than just plugging in predetermined numbers.

This tutorial was amazing and Andrew Kramer is the best for making all of these tutorials free of charge. I did this project and everyone was completely stunned when I showed them the final product. Thanks, Video Copilot! When I finally get a decent income, I'll be sure to buy some of your products.

Where did you get the sound effects for this video. I'm curious to where you get most of you SFX actually, they all sound amazing and complete the work. Nice job Andrew, keep up the good work.
Will
01/07/2014
Any SFX for film/media is usually provided by a Foley artists sample set / recorded specifically for the project, if budget allows. A lower budget operation would use anything they could get and have a sound designer tweak it to make it fit. Larger scale projects can afford new recordings, or a well versed sound designer to create the sounds from scratch specifically for the footage given.

Hey guys! Just discovered a quick little thing, when making the rotating lines, instead of modifying the expression to offset the spinning, there's an option in the effect called "Random Phase"
You just have to tick that

Hope this helps! Amazing tutorial Andrew!

Often I don't even do these tutorials, I just like watching you do it...
And I don't know how to explain this, but I thought it was bad, up to a point when it started looking so "professional" and just pure and...awesome...
I just quickly went through the tutorial again. That moment seems to happen somewhere past the 27th minute :)
I don't know how, but I just get lost when I start doing the things I imagine, you seem to know exactly what you're going to get and how...
I honestly wish I had more time and money to practice all this. Anyway, keep it up!
JNome

Excellent tutorial and really inspiring to get you into it very quickly too. I am currently producing dance and down tempo electronica and this will really help to put a commercial finish to transitions for our music vids. Looking forward to going through more. Any thoughts of an intro for our current track Winter Sun? I have normal outdoor footage that I can colour grade to an almost B&W;but slightly seppia tone. I will check out your other stuff to see other gems there, thanks again. JNome http://www.reverbnation.com/jnome

Does it take a lot of time to render in Quicktime? I usually render it in WMV , because it renders quickly and and file is like 1-10 mb if the video is shorter than 5 mins :D
C.L.B
11/04/2013
If I dont have Quicktime, what could I use otherwise?

So I was screwing around with this animation, and I wondered if it would be possible to make the actual shape of the spinning lights into more of a rectangle than a circle. I figured it would be nearly impossible to do since polar coordinates only turns things into circles, but I was wondering if anyone else might be able to find a way to do this. Thanks.

Outstanding as usual. In addition to learning AE technical superiority, you will come to appreciate some good old-fashioned dry humor.

Wow, Andrew! There's a lot of stuff in this one that helped me better understand how to structure my comps AND how After Effects handles things!

When I first saw the final comp I was sure there were lights in there. It's amazing how effective fast blur and glow can be when coupled with a lens flare.

Just to say thanks for making a tutorial that does not require 3rd party plug-ins. Nothing against element 3D or anything its just nice to be able to take part with what I have at the moment.

One day I will be able to buy trapcode, cameratracker, optical flares, 3D Max... etc. Eventually one day I will have all of those effects and be able to follow along

Fantastic tutorial

Great tutorial Mr. Kramer. I have been trying to build a sci-fi style spinning generator device in AE and was about ready to give up and compromise by using footage of the spinning internals of MRI and CAT scanners. Now I have seen this tutorial one of my first thoughts was "Doh, why didn't I think of that". One of the "problems" I have with AE is the sheer number of plugins and effects and their combinations that you can use to produce something unexpected, it can be very overwhelming. I think that this is just down to the fact that I have done nowhere near enough experimentation, and I'm sure that I have yet to discover 90% of the potential of this great software. You make this voyage of discovery a lot easier with your tutorials, not just in their specific content, but in the techniques you demonstrate. Keep up the good work good sir. +1
Aaron

is anybody having trouble when adding the "CC Force Motion Blur" effect? its not giving me the "Ghosting" effect, it makes my spectrum disappear.
Dirk
10/18/2013
I have the same problem.
If you watch the tutorial he puts it on the audio layer, not on an adjustment layer.
If you put it on an adj layer the effect is not the same, but it works.
Beau McCombs
10/16/2013
Yeah, same here.
Andrew
10/16/2013
Im having the same issue. Any ideas?
daniel
10/16/2013
You may have the opacity too low for that layer, causing it to disappear, or you added to many CC Force Motion Blur layers/segments, which can be a problem.
Chris
10/16/2013
It is stated in the description of the video. Add it to an adjustment layer on the top of the spectrum.

10/15/2013
It's really exciting! Thanks for some features that i do not use, but not now. Now i would use it!
And.. Andrey, you like optimise everything why you don't optimise bouncing parameters for keys of flare and bulge?
Maybe it better do by hands ). I do.
Gerald
10/15/2013
to adjust this further change the time script from -150 to say -80 and so one for each layer. this will achieve a slight variation to each spin to not have them all have the same beginning spin.
