47.5. 3D Text in 3DS Max
September 25, 2007
• Create 3D text with a seamless bg in 3ds Max
• Use a skylight to generate soft shadows
Additional Tutorial Notes:
This is just a supplemental tutorial while I work on a new one for AE+Max. Notice the numbering. Remember you do not need to change 3D applications, you can easily follow along with most any mainstream 3D software. I don't even have a place for 3D tutorials... yet.

Thanks Andrew! So glad we speak the same language Hope you feel the urge to make some more. Maybe integrating 3ds max into after effects. That would be awesome. Ok, going to go buy some of your products.....
by Giovanni 09/25/2007
Maya maya maya maya...thanks anyway....
by Clint 09/25/2007
Ahhh, I hoped it to be C4D but this is cool too. Can't wait to look.

by oceanflowingmotion 09/25/2007
hey andrew, its probably the best solution but have you ever looked into Zaxwerks?
by Casbert 09/25/2007
Nice tutorial man! I've trawled the 'net for ever looking for good, easy to follow tutorials in Max only for Mr. Kramer to come up trumps. I hope you plan to do more Max tut's in the future. Recently bought Riot Gear, Serious FX and AME. All quality products. Thanks dude!
by Dave 09/25/2007

Thanx for the tutorial... I also USE 3D Studio Max.. Great program! For me the Best!

Thnx... lookin forward 4 the next one!

by Christine Long 09/25/2007
Thanks Andrew, it was great. Someone mentioned 'rain effects' in the comments to your last tutorial, I too would love you to do a 'creating a rain storm' tutorial if you could. Great work, I love all your tutorials. Keep it up.
by Fabio 09/25/2007
hi andrew i'm very glad to see this cool tutorial because i'm using 3d max and maya also..

welcome back!!
by Vodkashorty 09/25/2007
It's tutorial no. 48... but really nice
by Brian 09/25/2007
Okay, so you're going to use 3DS Max for the tuts, but what's your personal 3D program of choice, C4D?
by Tramadol 09/25/2007
Nice Andrew, very nice - sudden voice from deep lair :) Yes, I admit Ben that you should integrate 3dmax in afterfx
by Rock Lee 09/25/2007
why the hell are u doing aftereffects tutorials with other programms. dude i dont understand u, but its for free so keep doing xD
by Christian Horne 09/25/2007
Fantastic tutorial! I had a demo of 3D MAX and just gave up because no-one out could just give out the basics. Local collage courses where I live for both AE and 3D MAX are really hard to find in the UK so these tuts are a God send! Would it be possible to do a Basic Training DVD for MAX in the same way you have done the Basic After Effects Training DVD? Thanks again!
by Martin 09/25/2007
Yay! You focus on my apps of choice: After Effects and Max! Have you thought about upgrading though? We are up to version 10 (3dsmax 2008) now and it makes life SO much easier!:)
by trypt0phan 09/25/2007
Thank you. Nice to see some basics of 3D.
Making us all very well rounded. By that, I mean...sitting around on our duffs doing all these new tutorials getting fatter :)

great stuff...thanks again.
by Clyde Benedict 09/25/2007
When Andrew do maya tutorials? He'll be the BEST
by Martin 09/25/2007
Hi Andrew,

I must agree with Ben.

Any chance of doing a tutorial overview of
how to film a model car, plane etc in Max &
then add it to your footage in AE ? Maybe....

Thank you for all your tutorials.... Brilliant !
by Kami3d 09/25/2007
Hey Andrew, *Congrats* for New born baby girl. Best Wishes mate.

Ok,back to these tutorials - you've been comming out of these fine tutorials so far, but i really would like some in-depth look into rendering out pass-elements from 3ds max scene and how you can take that renders and enhance it in post eg: After effects to save costly production time. Thats one area i don't think you haven't covered if my memory serves me right?

Another thing I like about your tutorials - they're soo close to production quality and very much thought-out and "attractive" tutorial's.

Thanks soo much.
by Marc Biorklund 09/25/2007
Very nice 3D Tutorials I am very happy you started teaching us 3DS MAX, I have been playing with it when I was younger, but I get bored to wait 10 hours to render something with my pentium 133 that finally didn't look good

I know there lot's of really cool stuff that could be done with the combination of 3DS MAX and AE, so thanks for making all this fun again

Cheers,
by Chru 09/25/2007
3DS max is good choice. You can add some particle tutorials with connection into after effects. For example something like NigthCrawler smoke effect. That would be cool.
by Max 09/25/2007
YAY! Simple, but awesome as always! Thanks Kramer.
by Dazza 09/25/2007
true words spoken "Maya maya maya maya" is the premium graphics software of choice by all 3s houses

Bye the way well done again 10/10

by tktodd 09/25/2007
Man this sucks!! I came here for After Effects Tutorials!! . Just a little joke from one of your previous tutorials. Anyway, this is a Good one!!
by Morten Enoksen 09/25/2007
Eh.. thanks Andrew.. But i though u preferred C4D when it came to 3D.. Sure it will help people;)
by Murat 09/25/2007
very good text thank you Andrew
by Ozb 09/25/2007
Thanks. I am definitely interested in picking up some skill in 3d apps. It would be great to see how to do some camera tracking with Boujou or a similar package...

Wow ! Amazing tutorial Andrew !! I´ve learned a lot with ur After Fx tutorials and now this !!! i can barely wait to see the next one !!! Thanks a lot !!!!!
by lee 09/25/2007
Hey man great tutorials love to see some more especialy particle systems brought all your products there great so any one else thinking about bying them do it............... do it now
by Joe 09/25/2007
Wasn't that good, sorry didn't have the flare of your AE stuff. Maybe something that incorporated AE with Max, such as 3d camera matching/tracking would be nice. Ive been using Max for about seven years so maybe thats why i feel this way. I do like most of your tuts but this one seemed phoned in.
by Jeffrey 09/25/2007
It's really cool watching this site grow.
I like the friendly feel it's always had.

Thanks Andrew
by Aaron 09/25/2007
Great stuff! So glad you chose 3ds Max.
by Hpousi 09/25/2007
i hope you do a lot of 3d max tutorials
by NAV 09/25/2007
Im a Maya guy, but glad to see some 3d stuff here too .. but dont forget to throw AE Magic as usual .. Cheers ..
by Vikram 09/25/2007
Dear Andrew,

Many thanks for your wonderful tutorials. I work on after effects as a hobby and with the help of your tutorial i have been able to create my own 20 sec commmercial for my own company.

HATTS OFF TO YOU PAL,

by Hpousi 09/25/2007
really cool. i hope you do a lot of 3d max tutorials.
by Max Marklund 09/25/2007

by naimalwan 09/25/2007
CINEMA 4D...

It makes so much sense to use C4D considering its intergration with AE....

But thanx for the tut... guess i'm gonna have to start learning 3ds max...
by Brian M 09/25/2007
Looks good. I've been trying to decide which program to use when I make the leap to 3D. If you make picking up 3DS Max as easy as you did with After Effects I guess I might have to go with it.

Anyway thanks for the tut, exciting to see you expanding the scope of the site.

BTW - Why keep your mastery of 3D secret for so long? It makes me sick how much you know!!
by nico 09/25/2007
thanks for this great tutorial...
by Jessica 09/25/2007
Great tutorial!!!
by Jeffrey 09/25/2007
This site just keeps on growing.

Video Copilot is my anti-drug.
by Stefan 09/25/2007
Nice tutorial but don`t stop making After Effects tutorials pls.
by Cris 09/25/2007
that's easy but with the integratin in after effects u can do stuff and export them in 3DS and with a plugin from zaxwerks proanimator u can play in AF with the camera and lights ... anyway i want to know other ways of 3d studiomax and after effects integration ... but hey thanks u do a great job .. keep it that way
by André 09/25/2007
Really good stuff there. Keep up the good work
by Matías 09/25/2007
Thanks Andrew!!! your works are amazing.
Thanks for share
by Nova 09/25/2007
This site is like drugs to me i need my dayly injection. Thank you Andrew
by sean barrett 09/25/2007
Aww wish it was cinema 4d but you cant please everyone. Thanks dude!
by Azael Garcia 09/25/2007
Thanks Andrew, The Tutorial rocks!
I am an After Effects user but as many of us here I also use 3D Max, (I not good at it though), thank you for making this very first Tutorial with 3Dmax, I will be really happy to see more in the future.

Yes, it's a good Idea to integrate MAX with AE, that would be great....

Thanks again//
by Frederik 09/25/2007
Yeah, cool whit 3ds max. I have never relly understand that program but if you are going to make tutorials with it so then maby could learn. Thank you Andrew
by Tom 09/25/2007
Thanks Andrew, it's nice to see some 3ds mograph tutorials instead of c4d! Keep it up! ;)
by zach 09/25/2007
It's very cool, trying to buy C4D.
by MNI 09/25/2007
Very nice!

But now we have png's. So if i import them in AE then you can't do much with it then to show.
You can't fly above it or something.
Or do i miss somethinge here??

Is it possibele to use the extrude text in AE so it is not an image but a real big en thick text?
by Orc Master 09/25/2007
Graet stuff! And I THOUGHT I knew 3DS Max!

Get those watermelons rolling!
by Mickel 09/25/2007
See...you think you are throwing us some measly 1/2, add on tutorial when really this should be #48. You can read the manual all day, but seeing someone actually use the software makes a huge difference. Thanks.
by Benji 09/25/2007
Hey I really like this tutorial and i hope you keep integrating 3dmax and/or other 3d programs into your tutorials. I'm a fish out of water with 3D programs outside of AE and am anxious to learn more because i know they can be an integral part of getting what's in your head into that final render.

I think Video Copilot should be about getting that great end product and that sometimes a great design requires more than one tool. So some people might complain about stepping outside of AE but for me it just makes sense.
by simondo 09/25/2007
you probably expected this, but i thought this site was going to be just for after effects. i think you are doing a great job, but i hope theres more after effect stuff.

keep up the good work
by ragecg 09/25/2007
I agree with Giovanni, but thanks for taking your free-time doing stuff for free brother:)

Waiting for your next dvd:)

by Mikael Toxen Worm 09/25/2007
Nice one, again. I can totally see Tony Hawk rolling watermelons down a ramp!

I'd hoped for Cinema 4D, but of course you're the man who makes the decisions, and you've stated your reasons for picking 3ds max.
Will be looking forward for more tutorials taking advantage of 3d programs :)
by Phil 09/25/2007
Oh my God, Taht'S amazing^^ Very cool! Have you recived my mail? "A Mail from the other end of the World". I would regret , if you answer! Phil

I've had 3DS MAX 9 now for months, but finding it hard to learn stuff from other tutorial sites. Keep up the good work
by Titso 09/25/2007
That was an awesome tutorial:)
Andrew, it would be great if you started greating tutorials for 3Ds max and not only after effects, you will probably attract more people i think:) I hope to see more 3Ds max tutorials since you said you were good at it:D
by Nick 09/25/2007
Yes! 3ds max! Just like you Andrew it's the one 3d app I feel the most at home with, lucky me =)
by Breyon 09/25/2007
Thanks Andrew!!! You are the man! Just like Ben, I am glad to know that we speak the same language

Please do more. I also would like to see you integrate 3ds max into after effects and do some cool effects and compositing.

Thanks Again Andrew!
by Maurice 09/25/2007
Thakyou very much, I am glad you are heading in the 3d in video direction, that is the only reason I want to learn more 3d to make objects intrgrating it into video. Thanks a million.

by Henri 09/25/2007
Very useful for 3dsmax beginners such as me, thanks.
by Cliff Brannon 09/25/2007
Sweet, being a Max guy recently adding AE to their arsenal (AE learned in LARGE part due to Video Copilot- Thanks!) this is a great watch.
by Jeff 09/25/2007
Would love to see some 3D object integration/match moved in After Effects. Great stuff!

Hello andrew your's tutorials are amazing...Please create some tutorial on SOME magic
by goemon 09/25/2007
pretty interesting and surprising tutorial
You talked about exporting camera movement from 3Dmax to AE ... is the opposite possible?
by Jak Razzi 09/25/2007
Very nice Andrew. I love your work and have been a long time watcher. I agree that you should integrate 3dsmax into your web site. thanks!!!

~Razzi~
by Andreas Feix 09/25/2007
I use Strata 3D CX & this tutorial works great with Strata, well the result is pretty much the same... more general tutorials are deeply appreciated & welcomed!

by D`Cloud 09/25/2007
Glad to see a fellow max user
by Paul 09/25/2007
Very nice, 3ds max is the best next to maya. It was pretty easy tutorial though but great for beginners who aren't known with 3ds max yet.
by Georgi Zhekov 09/25/2007
Pretty nice tut ;)

Later on you could make some tutorials on Particle Flow, which is really impressive option inside 3dsmax.
by Orlando Robles 09/25/2007
well, it isn't C4D, but I respect that.. =)

Based on some of your other Particular tutorials, I have animated nulls on splines in C4D and then taken that 3D data into After Effects and used that null for the source position for particular particles. this site is quite nice. good job. =) ... dude more particular tutorials would be nice... nice SK8R reference andrew. lol.
by Joris Strickx 09/25/2007
glad i'm learning already in 3ds maxespecially to integrate it into after effects.
by Nick 09/25/2007
Yes! 3ds max! Just like you Andrew it's the one 3d app I feel the most at home with, lucky me =)

Hey andrew! cant you put up the project you did, like you do with the other tutorials, :)
by Craig T 09/25/2007
Great tutorial, I would love to see more on this topic.

Peace, Craig T
by Dustin James 09/25/2007
That is nice...

I've wanted that, now I can go to the PC Lab and play and maybe think about buying a 3D app..

my only thing is.. how do you move around the perspective window like you were? do you just click and drag... or hold space bar to move around or when you were zooming in and things?
by joen myrtue Denmark 09/25/2007
super duber cool, more 3d tanks
by Jeremy Sexton 09/25/2007
Blender is free...

That'd be a pretty broad program to use for everyone to be able to apply.
by Scott 09/25/2007
Yes, awesome, thank you! Ha, 3DS Max, woohooooo!!!!
by Elhora 09/25/2007
well, maybe i'll be the only one to be a little disappointed...
The Tutorial is fine, but i hoped that 3D tutorials would be confined to the integration of 3D elements in AE (like exporting/importing camera moves, Depth of Fields data, integrating 3D object in videos...) so VC.net would have been dédicated to AE post-production...
by kooper 09/25/2007
wish u could have used a app. that was used for mac too.
by Rich 09/25/2007
Is it possible to integrate models from 3ds max onto live footage in after effects or any other way? someone told me its impossible it has to be over a still picture
by nicobn21 09/25/2007
GREAT !!!
i hope you'll make other 3ds max tutorial like this one !!
i'll buy all of your dvds turorial with 3ds max!

THANKS A LOT
by Chris Coulson 09/25/2007
Woo Hoo!!!

Not only a new tutorial, but a new tutorial on a NEW Product, that I know nothing about, but would love to know more!!!

Maybe we can persuade him to give up his Hollywood day-job, and dedicate his life to making us free tutorials every day??? please?
by Ben Whiting 09/25/2007
Very awsome andrew Very awsome

by John Paite 09/25/2007
O man I was thinking you were going to tell us how to get the camera data to AE and how to incorporate the two etc etc , but then it ended :(. well maybe next time!!
by Daniel Reynolds 09/25/2007
Sweet! Pretty easy to translate to blender! Cool tut.
by William 09/25/2007

Anyway, nice tut Andrew :)
by Markusw 09/25/2007
Great tutorial.

But I think you should show us how to incorperate it into AE.
It kinda left me hangin at the end.

I love you Andrew Kramer. Your tutorials are always so informative and funny to watch. I hope lots of people buy your products, you deserve it. Keep the great tutorials coming and THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
by Nomad 09/25/2007
hey... great tutorial! I have a really stupid question to ask... when you first created the plane in 3DMax you were able to rotate and move around in the "perspective" window with your mouse without using the rotate and move tools. What keys were used for this? Thanks!
by Brian Riker 09/25/2007
i use 3ds max. didn't think you'd do a max tut. awesome. will there be more?
by Way2Evil 09/26/2007
Great tutorial, a bit easy for most 3D Max users, but still good enough and even had a few things I didn't know.

I would love to see a tutorial about morphing.

by David Edwards 09/26/2007
Hey Andrew,

A little basic but nice to see you're touching on the 3d end. I've been using Max for 6 six years and stuggle with the intergration with AE. You touched on the RLF format at the end, this is something i'm hoping you expland on in future tutorials, i know AE can import RLF but i'm not sure how or where it splits the channel data.

Also composing 3d with a live plate.

I agree with a poster above, i'd very much like to see how you intergrate Max with AE. and is it possible to take camera data from Max to AE?

and to add to that is it possible to get 3d geometry into AE from max?

Thanks again,

Take care - David.

by Breyon 09/26/2007
Dazza,

MAYA is not the main choice for all houses. If your going to state information, make it accurate. I have friends working in houses from IL&M to Lucas Films to Dreamworks and they use 3DS MAX, MAYA, & XSI all of the time. And most of the time, they have totally reconfigured these programs using in-house scripting so much that they are not even close to the version that's on the box.

Thanks Andrew and sorry. I had to vent a little. The app. doesn't matter... it's the techniques. And we all appreciate you Bro.
by iNMAND 09/26/2007

Awsome Andrew definetly for me this is the best site integrating usable techniques

please if you can combine 3D STUDIO MAX and After Effects example
importing Z deep into After Effects from 3DMAX

Thanks for all the stuff you've given us recently. Really glad you're doing Max, I've used it for years but thought I'd have to learn C4D to get some decent integration with After Effects. Can't wait for the next tuts!

Great tutorial, i just have a question. In the perspective view, how did you move the view around like a free camera? Is it a certain keyboard shortcut?

Hey Andrew and Max Users,

For those people who don't think Max and AE flow together, "YOUR CRAZY"! If you want to integrate camera data, lights, and other resources from 3DS Max into AE, there is a plug-in called "Max2AE" by Boomer Labs and it is made just for this.

www.boomerlabs.com

This will take all of your camera movement, lights, and so forth from Max and bring it right into AE. I use it all the time and it is AWESOME! You can render in layers for compositing purposes, place helpers in Max and they will import right into AE as solids, which then can be replaced with video or whatever else you want. I use this program for everything... from little projects to full out pro broadcast.

Just wanted to help out Andrew. Hope you don't mind. If you need me to do a tut, just let me know.

Hello Andrew!

It is good. and do not worry if you use maya or 3d max, I personally use maya, but both of them are highend 3D software produced by autodesk. You must have talent, because if you miss this, even if you have the best computer and best software you cant do anything. And i think you have talent so just cotinue using both techinques 2D and 3D.
If my english is bad, sorry for that.

by steven andrew 09/28/2007
This is very good. I enjoy all your tutorials.

My question falls along the line of combining the topics from this tutorial and something like the set extension tutorial.

I am looking to see how to export motion tracking data into a program like 3ds (i am moderately familiar with this 3d software as well) and assign it to a camera and then render out your computer generated subject/scene/objects and then add them to your original plates in After Effects to composite a cohesive, believable scene.

I am a little perplexed in how to get the data to integrate back and forth. Is this even possible?

Would it be possible to request a tutorial illustrating a 3d object composited into some video plates? (preferably hand held footage)

Whatever the case. I am finding all your work here very informative and useful beyond measure.

Thank you for all that you are doing.

Very nice, 3DS max looked difficult to me, you make it so much easier to understand!
by vlady oliver 09/29/2007
Congratulations, Andrew !!! Welcome to the Max world, my friend. You´ll can see in www.vladyoliver.com the results of six years of jobs with AE and Max together !!! They´re simple the best... I suggest this in your lesson: hide the base plane, go to Render ( F10 ), choose Render Elements Folder > Add > Specular. Max will be render another sequence that you can use in After Effects. Open this sequence in AE, choose screen, add glow it and you will take a photo-realistic effect over there. Try it !!! Regards.

Any ideas for learning 3DS Max better.

I really appreciated this tutorial.

by Gyorfi 12/12/2007
Hello

I used 3dsmax to make a simple box with a texture(picture on it) I export the file in .3DS format and after that I import it in AE using zaxwerks.

The problem: the texture is not visible on the box. what should I do?

by the way you are superb, thanks to you I learned after effects and now I can make money home at my PC.

Thanks:)

Hi Andrew Kramer! I like putting 3d in movies. Like space ships and that kind of stuff. But can you make a tutorial about how to create a scene of (for exampel) sam entering a 3d space ship and fly away?
usefull for star wars fanfilms.

oh and by the way. I'm saving to buy after effects cs3 and is it better than 7.0? And what's new in it?
(Is 3dstudio max free? And where can i get it?)

Greetings from sweden. YOU ROCK!!!
