by Jay 05/07/2008
I have a question - I was wondering if there is ever a downfall to working in 32bpc? Everything that can be done in 8bpc can be done in 32bpc, but you have a ton more possibilities in 32bpc... I feel like I'm missing something here and that AE should just default to 32bpc.

By the way, cool stuff as always!
by hamdanii 05/07/2008
helo andrew!

Dear Mr. Kramer,

With this comment, we would like to officialy complain about your unsporty behaviour towards our client, Mr. PlanB Multimedia.
We learned that you quit games of internet checkers early, thus avoiding the inevitable defeat and denying our client of his well earned testosterone injection, brought in by the rush of victory.

Herewith we would like you to urge, to reconsider your game acumen and show somne fair-play.

"I was wondering if there is ever a downfall to working in 32bpc? Everything that can be done in 8bpc can be done in 32bpc"

Yes there is, increased render times and lack of support for a wide array of plug-ins. Note that the plug-in that Andrew uses for the particles is not 32bpc aware. You can work around these issues by pushing values into overbrights using a 32bpc capable effect like levels or exposure but you're not really expanding the range of values produced by the effect... just pushing it above white. This technique will not work for every 8bpc/16bpc effect.

However, I would say that 32bpc is essential for serious color grading, film work, 3D renders and achieving naturalistic light effects (in combination with linear blending).

I had one quick question, when you are working in the color pallet selecting the "super bright colors", how do you switch the values of the R G B channels, (for instance mine say all white is 255,255,255 instead of 1,1,1) so when i go to make your adjustments i only get a dark black. It has to be just a setting right?
Thanks

@Tim: Have you set your project settings correctly? Are you working in 32bpc? I suggest you read the AE help for some insight:

http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/8.0/WS2AAFE7C0-B669-4d4f-B0EC-2A287AB50DDE.html

That entire page is valuable.

@Freddie: It sounds like you don't have AE CS3. Per-character 3D was a new feature in CS3.

Hi Andrew! I hope u can notice my comment and reply it!
Because I'm here to discuss some technical issue!

I've noticed that you hide some tricks in this tutorial. I mean the result is shown in the preview of "here's what we're going to be creating" but not shown in the tutorial.
I think the reason may be lack of time since it's a short-cuts or u just leave it for us to explore and experiment!

the little tricks are turning on carema's Depth of Field to make the scene realistic and blurring the text a bit to give it a yellow glow.

BUT there're BIG tricks.

For example you make letter "e" in the word ".net"
so close to the camera and just in the middle of the frame when it passes by,
(shown here: http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm170/kevin1649/910aaaac.jpg it's under 20KB)
and "e" is relatively bigger than "t"(in "copilot") or "." which really brightens the scene and make it so sharp.
Also when this "e" comes to its final position, it's NOT in the center of the frame. in fact it has quite a bit offset.
Through experimenting I find that changing the camera's position and rotation a little will achieve this. It's so slight that we can't even notice but it makes the characters' moving path totally different.
Also the character is rotating around x, not y or z which are shown in the tutorial. so another animator has to be added to move up the anchor point.
BUT that's not enough! Setting the offset z position to be twice the distance between camera and the text's final position can make them stay closer to x-z plane rather than like a line due to rotation.
Also I've animated the z position in range selector from -1000 to -500(camera z position is -480) to make the last few characters getting in a little slower and more elegently.

Still I find my project just doesn't look as sharp as yours, although this is not a complex one.
Is there any other trick I missed?

Here're 2 of my project's snapshot
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm170/kevin1649/ca6ba508.jpg
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm170/kevin1649/9241306a.jpg

BTW I've watched all your online tutorials and it's the first time I comment, cause when I wanna add a comment I find there're already so many comments.

but when watching the Andrew Kramer tutorial... he tought us from the very begining til end without anycuts.. and it was really eaxy to understand...

They called them self they are adobe certified...yea, hey mite be... but they dnt teach nice... teaching is not everyone cup of tea...
