p.s. if anyone reading this wants the talented Andrew Kramer to sing his next tutorial, start your message with "SING IT BABY"

by TParker 10/07/2008
Excellent. It is great to be able to watch someone run through the 3D compositing process to get a feel for the workflow. I don't understand half of what's going on... but, I'm finally starting to get the picture.

I think its worth to mention to use I on your keyboard while making lines or something else that is out of the view when you hit I, it brings your courser to the centre of the view your using. Try it, I think you'll get it what I meant.
by Josh M 10/07/2008
Thank you!!!!!! Awesome tutorial, can't wait to start working on it when I get time, keep up the amazing work and I can't wait for part 3!!!!!!!
by dragon020 10/07/2008

by Hamish 10/07/2008
@Gil-Mac - "P on the keyboard will do that for you..." HAHA ROFL
LOL!

Shouldnt you turn off environment before rendering, otherwise isnt setting it to PNG a bit pointless? then theres the whole compositing also lol
Great tut picked up a lot of good info!

Sei grande!
GRAZIE!
by Aesop 10/08/2008
Yeah great tutorial but like "Jo" said, what about the lighting?
by Neil Harrison 10/08/2008
Love all this work Andrew.. However, would love tutorials involving the items in the DVD packs etc., and not involving Particular or BouJou etc., as some people (like me) cannot afford such expensive software?? Just a thought dude, but love the work on here BIG time! Neil

by Finnishdude 10/08/2008
The tutorials are awesome. Especially this. But I can't just get rid of the plane to create the shadow on the street... I tried the see-through method, but it not transparent at all in rendering window, but in perspective view it's see through... What am I doing wrong?

Keep your good work Krammer.
you're a sample of profissional for all of us
by JPL guy 10/08/2008
Andrew, the crater you used for a depth map from NASA is called Victoria Crater and it's on mars. The rover called Opportunity has spent the last year exploring this massive body and has just reemerged to travel to an even bigger crater some miles away.

Anyhow, I'm a huge fan of your work. I've been applying the principles of your AE tutorials in my work here at JPL for the Mars missions!
by Marco 10/08/2008
Great tutorial! As usual you make it look easy :)

I am wondering though, since many of us in the design world use Mac's if there is some way to make this more accessible for Mac users as 3Dmax is PC only, and Boujou costs ten thousand dollars. Maybe a Blender/Cinema 4D version SynthEyes/Icarus.

Thanks!
by Emaus 10/08/2008
Nice tutorial once more. Just wished I had boujou.
by michael ghuniem 10/08/2008

Oh my brain hurts!!! I think my eyes crossed several times as you moved through Max...but you are the best and really appreciate you sharing your knowledge!
Plus your ability to move through menus and settings so quickly makes Michael Phelps look like he's swimming through mud compared to your Max manuverings.
Yahoo! keep it up...and thanx!

Hi Andrew
Many thanks for these invaluable set of tutorials. For those who haven't got a camcorder, could you please put the raw footage available for download?
Thanks in advance!

In the meantime I have been studying boujou, and I've found that there is a setting into the menu Edit->Preferences->3d display->Preferred camera orientation that should make the trick for 3ds max compatibility. Choose Z-up/Y-forward. Also in the tranformations toolbar, we can adjust the position of the main(reference)grid relative to ground. Hope this helps.
Keep up the best site forever, greetings from Spain.

Kramer is the """FXMAN""". No doubts about that !
by E Lancelot 10/13/2008
I looked up boujou, and it seems to be rather pricey.

What less pricey 3D trackers can you hook me up with?

As far as where to find it?
by HARISAMRITA 10/13/2008
You are to be declared as the "FATHER OF COMPOSITOR".......I had never seen such a cool dude having such a sharing mentality........you are great Andrew Kramer..........There will be no such person having a deep knowledge about the principles of compositing and the most wonderful thing about him is the mixing of colors..........
by Ivan 10/14/2008
@E Lancelot, try: http://www.pfhoe.com/hoepro.htm but if you're really cheap you could try the free Voodoo Camera Tracker: http://www.digilab.uni-hannover.de/docs/manual.html
by rabit 10/15/2008
