I am trying to do this same thing except instead of a street this is Antarctic ice pack. I created the meteor, the chunks of ice, etc. but I am having difficulty making the ground match my existing scene. I have a picture I made in Photoshop that is the backdrop for a music video I am doing. This picture is also where I want to crater to be. I need the crater to be in my existing picture or have it match the picture. I went through the entire tutorial and managed to get the ground to look like ice/snow but does not look like the picture. Any advice? Is there somewhere I can post the image for people to see?

When I attempt to make a group plane (Matte/Shadow) "See-through" It only makes slightly transparent, if I hide the object I don't get shadows. What should I do?

Hi! All the site is awesome i go here every day to watch and read stuff What i know i know from here) . In this thing i have a small problem i think. If anyone is having problems importing into 3ds Max...here is the fix I used. After you have exported your Boujou 5 tracking data to a 3ds Max file, open up 3ds Max 2010, go to MAXscript, open the script and then delete this:
b=openBitMap("D:/Projects/THE METEOR/RENDERS/Crater Raw Seq/Crater Raw_.ifl"
b.numframes = 171
setAsBackground b
setBkgImageAnimate true
setBkgImageAspect #output
setBkgFrameRange [0, 171, 1]
setBkgStartTime 0
setBkgSyncFrame 0
setRendApertureWidth 14.7574
renderHeight = 720
renderwidth = 1280
renderPixelAspect = 1.00004
frameRate = 24
animationrange = interval 0 171
SAVE the file and then open up MAXScript again and then RUN script. All done.
Works for me anyways.

Hey Andrew,
I'm having a problem in 3ds Max. I'm using the 2010 version though on demo. When I go to to load the Viewport background, all that shows up for the Camera 1 viewport is a white background.
I follow your steps exactly, and I've tried it many times, but it's still a white background that shows up, and not the image sequence.

he uses adobe after effects for the lightsaber but for this he used boujou for the 3d tracking and 3ds max to create the rubble in this tutorial then he did some of the smoke and stuff in after effects

Kramer's the best. I've been following along with c4d. And have been able to copy most of what's been done in max. It's been tough. I want to post the work around I've found, but to long for comment section. Will post in forums. i hope it helps c4d users

Hi Andrew, I am with Sony DCR-DVD106 camera and when I import the clips and I have to convert them from mpeg to avi(I am with ImTOO Video Encoder and the quality gets worse when I convert them) can you please e-mail me a name of a good convert program wich makes mpeg to a recognizable format to After Effects CS3

In the meantime I have been studying boujou, and I've found that there is a setting into the menu Edit->Preferences->3d display->Preferred camera orientation that should make the trick for 3ds max compatibility. Choose Z-up/Y-forward. Also in the tranformations toolbar, we can adjust the position of the main(reference)grid relative to ground. Hope this helps.

I am wondering though, since many of us in the design world use Mac's if there is some way to make this more accessible for Mac users as 3Dmax is PC only, and Boujou costs ten thousand dollars. Maybe a Blender/Cinema 4D version SynthEyes/Icarus.

Andrew, the crater you used for a depth map from NASA is called Victoria Crater and it's on mars. The rover called Opportunity has spent the last year exploring this massive body and has just reemerged to travel to an even bigger crater some miles away.

The tutorials are awesome. Especially this. But I can't just get rid of the plane to create the shadow on the street... I tried the see-through method, but it not transparent at all in rendering window, but in perspective view it's see through... What am I doing wrong?

I think its worth to mention to use I on your keyboard while making lines or something else that is out of the view when you hit I, it brings your courser to the centre of the view your using. Try it, I think you'll get it what I meant.

Excellent. It is great to be able to watch someone run through the 3D compositing process to get a feel for the workflow. I don't understand half of what's going on... but, I'm finally starting to get the picture.

Your the man Andrew... I first got on this website back in April and I've been on it EVERY DAY SINCE THEN!! Meteor Tutorial could be a DVD all in itself lol. Plus you got me into Fringe which is now my FAVORITE SHOW.

I fail at boujou 2d3 :/ I get tracking,solving etc problems :/ maybe low resolution of footage causes the problems? Its 700x400 something like that
