How do you do this if you don't have a 3D program like 3DMax or Boujou?
Theis

You apply on Autodesk's website for a student copy (that's free)
Raul

There are many 3d software you can use

one of the first sentinces, "we are going to use after effects, 3ds max, and boujou THOSE ARE THE F***ING MOST EXPENSIVE PROGRAMS ON THE ENTIRE PLANET *sob* please make cheaper tutorials. THEN I will completely WORSHIP you, seriously you are AWESOME but I would literally shoot myself if there isn't a way to do this in, cinema 4d and premiere.
Mathias
12 years ago
Professional fimlmaking is not cheap...otherwise the world will be crowded of millionares cinema directors, etc. And believe me...those are not the most expensives ones...
Isaac Sandy

Now I understand that the interface and the process are completely different, but I think you can use blender to achieve a similar effect. And, its free 100%, so no harm trying!

The script refuses to load in 3Ds max
Aydan Saunders

You might need to ad a missing parentheses in the script. Look for any out of place or missing ones. Then just do file, save (not save as) and rerun the script. Hope this helped!

Hey andrew,
Why do you have to change the z axis to the y axis? i dont exactly get that. Thanks
morgan
7 years ago
That's only in 3DS Max. They use an inverted axis system. The y axis would be x in after effects.

erm can someone help me with this? I've do everything the same as the video, but when I import the .ms file into 3ds Max it says something like:
--Syntax error: at ), expected <factor>
--In line: filename = "D:/movies/meteo/RawFootage01_.ifl

Btw, I'm using Autodesk 3ds Max 2011.
pls HELP!

I know this comment was posted a while ago, but I know the fix. Basically just delete the bracket at then of the file path on the line above the highlighted one when the windows pops up after trying to import to 3DS Max. Then save it, and try again.

Hey, can someone help me? I did the steps exactly the same way AK. In Boujou the points are ok, but when i export data do Afx, the points are floating, they are not 100% connected to where it's suppose to be.
by the way, your tutorials are amazing, Andrew! I started learning AFX with videocopilot and i'm very grateful.

Hello Sir, Thank you soo much for your tutorials but this is the only one tutorial that gets bugged with me, and i can't get through this one.

When you click on Edit>Camera. My menu isn't same as yours. like, there are no settings for editing the FPS of camera. I got Boujou 5.0 and when i export the data for Adobe After Effects, the Null objects don't remain the same, they are like shruggling around on the screen.

Please help. Will be very thank full.

Best Regards
crazykm
14 years ago
Hi speed,
I had the same problem with my aftereffects export... the null objects jumped around when imported to AE.
I managed to solve the problem by going in to taskview(it's the tab near toobox on the left side of the screen of boujou), chosing cameras, expanding camera and double clicking your sequence. This opens up the properties for that sequence.
The frame rate of that is just never the same for me as the frame rate of the imported sequence eventhough I set it as the framerate of the scene from after effects.
Synchronise this frame rate and i think you would be able to see results after you re-export the points.
Hope this helps

Hah, in this video, you made a "War of Worlds" reference. Didn't you, cause there was an alien ship that came out of the ground to destroy the world in that movie. The way I put that makes me seem like a geek but I'm not; just an average kid.

If anyone is having problems importing into 3ds Max...here is the fix I used. After you have exported your Boujou 5 tracking data to a 3ds Max file, open up 3ds Max 2010, go to MAXscript, open the script and then delete this:

b=openBitMap("D:/Projects/THE METEOR/RENDERS/Crater Raw Seq/Crater Raw_.ifl&quot
b.numframes = 171
setAsBackground b
setBkgImageAnimate true
setBkgImageAspect #output
setBkgFrameRange [0, 171, 1]
setBkgStartTime 0
setBkgSyncFrame 0

setRendApertureWidth 14.7574
renderHeight = 720
renderwidth = 1280
renderPixelAspect = 1.00004
frameRate = 24

animationrange = interval 0 171

SAVE the file and then open up MAXScript again and then RUN script. All done.
Works for me anyways.

I have a problem with the tutorial (74. 3D Crater p1) when I export the points tracking of boujou to after effects, the points appear as me square in the center of the screen, do not understand why you do this, if I do everything as Andrew explains.

I use after effects cs3 and boujou 4, is this something to do??

Just a small tip for people who stop with this Part 1 tutorial and not go to Part 3. 'coz of that none of the NULLS stick to the plane and keep moving.

The hint is in the end of Part 1 when Andrew says, "It gets little tricky for this composition". The trick is the Pixel aspect ratio correction by adjusting the Camera Zoom value (*1.111) and changing the comp to 1280 * 720, which Andrew explains in the beginning of Part 3.

Hope this helps people like me who didn't cross Part 1 due to 3DS Max

Now my Nulls stick to the footage like a leech.

I was wondering, when you import the boujou camera into AE the comp resolution seems to be different from the export resolution. when I export at 1920x 1080 I get a comp that is 1728 x1080. I noticed this happened in your tutorial as well. My question is , what is the correct way to scale this comp to fit the original footage? (or vise versa) and why does this occur? I saw another tutorial in which the author manually scaled his footage to fit the size of the new comp but I was wondering if there is a better way. Forgive me if this has been asked already but I dont have time to read through all of the "cool tutorial!" "wow great job!" comments in order to find out. Having said that , cool tutorial! great job!

for the ones who want to know, if you go to import the cam mov from boujou to XSI 6.5 or above, you dont have do anything for the track to be compatible just place a test object and see if its set correctly, most of the time it is set well by default, select flags some points for reference, it give me some headache and longs hours of testing until y try to leave something as default, y incredible it works. later i felt like a dumb. jeje tanks for the tut

good...i love boujou...always have haha. there is a big demand for tracking TDs out there with a good knowledge of boujou and by you doing this, you are openning sooo many doors for people interested specifically in matchmoving.

also on another note, if you made that Fictional Studio into a t-shirt i would sooo buy it hahaha.

Great tutorial. The crater scene had mullty null objects, and when text was applyed to the one null position properties it correlated with all null objects in the scene. Just wondering if the same or similar effect(tracking ) could be achived with multiple 2d tracking that is provided by AE?

Thanks so much for releasing more power to my fingertips....lovin it large.

Just as a point of intrest..I have been using boomerlabs Max2AE pluging for the past few months to get 3d helpers and Ref points into AE from Max. Its awesome to say the least, export scenes including object helpers, camera's and lighting. Has saved me so so much time...a cheaper alternative to boujou.

Hey Andrew, this is amazing! I am going to try this when the other part is release and join it with my other video!

Great to see your workflow for Boujou it can be a joy and sometimes a pain.

I like the other commenter change the preferences so the co-ordinates system is Max friendly.

I didn't realise you could alter the Camera settings AFTER you track I always setup the camer settings i.e. framerate before tracking.

Boujou isn't too keen on standard video camera footage i.e interlaced footage as probably most of your readers/viewers use this, in their own films/videos, you can help it along tho if you shoot the scene you intend to track at a much higher framerate, (obviously this depends on your camcorder settings) as long as you stay in your NTSC or PAL settings increasing the frames per sec on you camera even if its higher than PALs 25fps or NTSC's 29.97fps the footage will still adhere to that standard so if you shot at 1000 frames per second in PAL (thus reducing motion blur, Boujous deadly ememy) when you import it into Boujou it still will be PAL 25 FPS (or more accurately interlaced 50fps) this will dramatically improve your tracking success rate.

Excellent informative stuff Andrew. ACE!!

I think you should create a new button for this web in each tutorial with some text like:

"ZOMG holy f***in' sh*t, Andrew this is so cool how do you do it Thankyouyouarethebest omg!!!!11one"

instead of a retarded-driven comment board full of useless comments, only 0.1% of them are helpful or even interesting in any way. It doesn't have to be like this if you separate the "thanks" from the "interesting comments" that are being ignored now by being lost in the immensity.
Many sites have rules such as "All comments that doesn't contribute to the thread will be moved or deleted". I know there is a forum, but this should be where people talk and provide useful information about the tutorial.

This site could be better... if you want.
(feel free to edit this post as you like)

TL;DR:
Whenever you want to thank Andrew and request for a new useful comment board with no "thanks" at the same time, post the text:

ZOMG holy f***in' sh*t, Andrew this is so cool how do you do it Thankyouyouarethebest omg!!!!11one
