Can't see my building in 3D space. I have my main comp called "MAIN". Nested within it is a pre-comp called "building". And nested inside building are the 4 walls, which are pre-comps called "wall". Four walls are duplicates. I aligned each of the "wall" precomps in 3D space to form the building. When I go back to MAIN, I only see the front wall! I made sure all layers in every comp are 3D layers. Help!

Hey,
Has anyone else had a problem with the buildings merging into one another when they duplicate and move them? The layers for the buildings are in the right order. With the furthest away at the bottom but parts of the buildings in the background are still showing through the buildings in the foreground. I've been trying to work it out for a while and googled it but no luck. There doesn't seem to be anyone else in this forum thats had the same problem? If anyone knows how to fix it or what i'm doing wrong it would be really useful!
I'm using cs5.
Thanks

Every time I "MAKE MOVIE" and play it back, some of the building appear to go through one another.
I checked them all in the "TOP" view, but it is sill the same result

I have a question, about the painting tool.
I can't apply the effect on all my sequence. When I draw shadows on a building, it only appears on one single frame at the very begining. How can I do for it to appear on all my sequence ?? Please help !
By the way this is awesome (as usual..)

Hey quick question. I've been trying to just add a little motion blur to some of the building but every time I try and add the effect, the the 3d comps are no longer visible. Anyone else having the same problem? Any advice?

This was fantastic. I'm currently attending the Art Institute in Houston and I've been trying to duplicate the city of Atlantis in the TV series Stargate Atlantis and someone told me of this tutorial (I already new about Video Copilot) and you knocked this out of the park. The same day I was told of this I brought my digital camera to take some pictures of buildings in the Galleria area, what a coincidence, Thanks. I'm more of a visual person so these tutorials help quite a lot. It won't be long before I purchase some of your DVD's and I'll also be looking into that music one as well. Thanks again.

Hey guys!
First - This is the most amazing tutorial I ever saw on this Page - real good work man!
But I have a little problem I am sure if this is the right address to get helped with.
I watched this tutorial then I had the Idea to build in some 3d Buildings like you can find at the Google 3d warehouse.
Everything went okay but there is a huge problem. The imported 3d building doesn’t align like the other buildings I build up like in the tutorial.
I am desperate – is there any way to get this problem solved?
Best regards from Germany!

Love the Tutorial..... thanks! A small tip for us newbies.... I found when I was lining up the first buildings four sides, instead of doing it manually, I found the transform / position option did it much easier for me. ie: first side: 500, 500, 0. Second side 500, 500, 1000. Third side 0. 500, 500 and fourth side 1000, 500, 500. Lined it up perfect as my eyes aren't too good
No critic on your part though! You're the man! Cheers

Hey Andrew, Great tut!
I wanted to share back with you - I wanted to add a little 'life' to the lens raindrops so here's what I did:
MOVING DROPS
The static raindrop layer I made with a white solid, and added CC Star Burst with; scatter 794; Speed 0; Grid Spacing 4; Size 400.
Then I added a black solid (moving drops layer) on top of that and added a single white painted dot (in "Paint on Transparent"
that slowly 'drips' down.
I duped the moving drop layer several times and changed it's position and scale so I had about 5 different ones.
I slid them randomly to the right in the timeline so they would 'land' on the lens over time (and then drip down)
On top of it all I added an adjustment layer to which I added the Lens Blur FX you recommended.
It adds a nice suggestion of rain still coming down...
Thanks again for the great lesson.

I was studying this tutorial, let me tell you how amazing it's to hear you speak with such clarity and order when making your exercises, you also do not stay with the first look. always go beyond and go further in that you teach us 2, 3 or 4 more things, you don't know how I to appreciate it.
I am proud to be your student.
This time there was no project, only JPGs. The project is very helpful to compare some setings if something is wrong or not running properly, but doesn't matter.
Thanks as always from México

I wondered about this for an age but never thought about the individual pre comps for quicker adjustments, great stuff, in my version I made it rian with particular added motion blur and put cc drizzle over the orginal roof photo, so you pass over the roof, it works wuite well if you have the pc for it, you can use cc rain as an alternative though. great stuff as always andy peace out.

Cool tutorial. Looks very nice with simple planes. But the cropping of the building image could be done more easily by selecting the crop tool, select the perspective button on the top options of the crop tool and select the perspective cropping region that you want. Hit enter and PS does the rest. Just a shortcut.

Hello Andrew. First of all thanks a lot for all the really nice tutorials you provide free of charge.
Here is just a small tip I would like to share:
In the begging of the tutorial you use the "Transform > Distort" tool in photoshop to correct the perspective of the building, but there is a much easier way to do that inside photoshop. Instead of the distort tool, you can use the "Crop" tool. After drawing the crop boundary there will be a checkbox called "Perspective". Turning it on, you will be able to align the crop box to the perspective of the building. Just hit enter and there you have it: Flat and cropped.
Kind regards!
Cassiano

Superb tutorial Andrew. Was a little surprised you didn't use the Crop Tool set to Perspective to create the build sides which would have cropped it all straight in one shot rather than using Free Transform and Distort and aligning via Guides - but hey good job anyway

Building "cardboard cities" can yield much better results than usually expected.
Here's a short video - a "making of" for the project I did back in 2003. Except for a different stylistic approach, the techniques used are very similar to those of your tutorial:
http://www.imagonewmedia.com/player.php?id=51
Keep 'em coming - it is always fun to watch your presentations.

I only wish you would work the tutorials and show us the best way to do things as separate rendered movie parts to be composed for final renderings.
With layers, effects, particles, 3d, adjustment layer over adjustment layer, my machine chokes to a halt when rendering.
Not all of us have multi-quad core 32GB machines you know.
CHEERS!

I love how in your original comp you took a building and squished it into a small square to make it look the building had a protrusion at the top.
This technique reminds me of what they always do on the TV show "Smallville" when they are beginning a new scene or setting. Here is an example
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOWTPlntsRk
I couldn't find a longer, better one on youtube, but you get the idea of what i mean.
This technique reminds me of what they always do on the TV show "Smallville" when they are beginning a new scene or setting. Here is an example

I couldn't find a longer, better one on youtube, but you get the idea of what i mean.

Greatly enjoyed the tutorial! As always, you stimulated my thinking as to how I can incorporate this sort of project into my weekly video output. The downer in this case is that my city's skyline has about three buildings bigger than a breadbox. (visualize sad face here) Thanks, just the same, Andrew, for your constant tutelage. Take the rest of the day off. You earned it.

About the tagline,
Andy, you should watch "EuroTrip", There's a scene where a guy is getting mugged in Amsterdam, he didn't complain much about it.

great work andrew! and dia duit from ireland! it looks really great - it might look a bit more realistic if you apply your 3D Falloff on it or if you turn the aperture or the focus on on the camera, the buildings in the background are too sharp and in-focus compared to the "new-york skyline" directly behind it, but never the less, great work! keep it up!!

I'm glad that you did a tutorial about AE 3d. It's me favorite.
http://vimeo.com/3157365
That's my reel, it's pretty much all AE 3d!
Andrew you're the best, I started with Video Copilot a little over a year ago and now I got some marketable AE skillz. If you guys make more shirts you should make some that say, "Everything I know I learned from the Kramer." And then have you posing in the Kramer pose.
