I have honestly been giving this tutorial a try at least once a year since i think 4 years now and I still can't get past a certain point. Ive solved to end brackets problem (contrl+alt+,(comma) and contrl+shift+, (comma)) but somehow this doesnt sequence well and therefore makes tutorial impossible. Please Andrew. HELP!

Hi Andrew! Love these tutorials, as so many others obviously do as well. However, I think many would benefit even more if there were a section in the beginning of each video where you list out the main effects or plug-ins you'll be using. Things like opacity and scaling are givens, but the highlighted ones I think would be really important to list out so that users can make notes of them first thing without having to scrub through to find out what that one particular effect was called... Thanks for all that you do!

So I'm having an issue after I create the 25 layers and than off set them and ALT+[ I preview it and the picture I'm using goes from a bunch of balls to having space in between each layer. So it's like there's a bunch of empty space in between each layer.
Any ideas?

Hey! Very nice tutorial and effect but I am having problems at exactly 08:03 . My comp screen remains black after that point but it shouldn't. I am completely desperate and I have no idea how to fix this. This is my first tutorial apart from the basics and I really don't know how to do this. I am using CS6.

For min 9, if you have a mac key board, you should set your keyboards language to us international and then the shortcut will be

ok im stuck at 9:15
He says to "Ctrl a to select all then apple begin bracket" and it brings all the layers back to the first frame but leaves them sequenced...or stepped i guess...Now if i hit alt+[ it will stretch all the layers to the first frame but they are not sequenced. Just like what he does at 8:03

ok im having a huge issue....

Is there an effect like cc ball action that can be assigned to another video clip (like a bug or bird)? looking looking trying to find an easier way to do a transformation like the ravens in Snow White and the Hunts man.

Its pretty bad to use commands of specific places in tutorials, I suggest at least to put on the screen the pictures of the keys you're using while using them, that could help so much .

Hello,
I really liked this tutorial. I'm continually getting stuck in one past of my project-@ 5:00 Animate the mask to grow out; I hold down shift + alt + ctrl and the scale of the image keeps increasing to around 2000% at frame 25.
Then also the 2cd keyframe in the timeline doesn't show up.
Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Hello, Andrew Kramer. I use your tutorials for some movies and video shorts, thank you for them. The only thing that really annoys me about this video and maybe some other videos is the fact that i went over my presets and such and there was no "sequencer script". I tried looking for it, and i found nothing; dissapointed, i tried offsetting the layers frame by frame manually, but it does not give the same effect results for the video. Someone, or preferably you, reply and/or give a link as to where this could be found. I could not continue as to what the effect as failed.

I am trying to substitute the star (which is native black in png) with another symbol (which is whitem in ai), but I don't understand why, after the work, the symbol I am trying to use stays black (despite its color is white!)

I just figured out the alt+home dilemma, here is the fix if you don't have an fn key.
"TimeStretchIn" = "(Ctrl+Shift+Comma)"
"TimeStretchOut" = "(Ctrl+Alt+Comma)"
Literally just hold down ctrl + shift then press comma etc.
"TimeStretchIn" = "(Ctrl+Shift+Comma)"
"TimeStretchOut" = "(Ctrl+Alt+Comma)"

It's fairly simple to write a script that offsets layers in time, but there are other sites out there that use sequencer scripts in their tutorials, my guess is that it was just andrew messing around with sequence things, and found that there are sequencer scripts out there, whipped up one that he liked, and then used it to create this awesome little effect

I'm using the effect for a logo. The logo is solid white, and I have it on a blue background. I added an "overlay" effect to the white logo so it would blend with the background.
Can someone tell me WHY after I complete the tutorial, my white logo (with the ball effect) is giving me radial STRIPES?!

For After Effects 7.0 I got the problem solved, just by finding the After Effects 7.0 shortcuts.txt fail and changed the "TimeTrimIn" = "(Alt [)" to "(Alt 8). Thanks to the commenter belove Sandinama 10/19/2010.

why am i having issues when i sequence the layers by one frame and then do the alt + [ (its around the 8 minute mark of the tutorial). the issue i'm having is that there are some balls missing. i've tried getting some answer's on the forums but thats taking forever ; ;

On a iMac, running CS5. Spent 4 hours on this tutorial and could't get beyond the 9 minute mark. Followed your instructions to the letter, and all 25 Title Comps play in reverse order or don't work at all.

I am a new learner to After Effects. It took me forever to understand how Andrew did the "animated sequence" part because I kept on delting the files. It looked like he was doing this, but he wasn't (7:13 minutes).Finally got it.

hi! I download the project file and tried to export the it as .swf to see how big it'll be. Then I opened it in flash and it's either just an image or with the transition but without all that glow and cc ball action

To answer a question I see asked a lot on these comments, just to help others:
The "alt-open bracket" Andrew is referring to is a square bracket which is [ or ] depending on whether you are cutting to the left or the right of the time ruler.
To practice - Simply select a layer and place the time ruler somewhere within active timeline. If you alt [ it will slice everything to the left of the time ruler on selected layers. Similarly, if you alt ] it will slice everything to the right of the time ruler for all selected layers.
Hope this helps.

But at a certain point of the tutorial where you say to press control A and after hit alt home...nothing happens on my computer. Already tried the forum but there is no answer for that. It would be great if you teach another way to slide all the frames. Coz alt home doesn't work. Cheers

But at a certain point of the tutorial where you say to press control A and after hit alt home...nothing happens on my computer. Already tried the forum but there is no answer for that. It would be great if you teach another way to slide all the frames. Coz alt home doesn't work. Cheers

Hey Andrew.
Thanks again for another great tutorial, I'm just having one small problem. Instead of the logo appearing as the time goes forward, it stays static then starts to disappear instead of being revealed. Any clue what I'm doing wrong here? I've followed the tutorial through step by step like 5 times now with the same results. Thanks man!

Awesome tutorial! One suggestion though: you could precompose the text layer at the beginning of the project that way you could use any name or comparably sized graphic by editing said comp without having to do the whole thing over again.

Nice tutorial as always. I had a thought though for curious minds. Instead of making the layers 1 frame long or using a script to offset them by 1 frame, you can overlap them by a duration 1 frame less than the length of the layer. Yeah?

I have the sollucion , i've had a simular problem , and you can fix it by typing keybord (in the search box in ae) and the downloading the keyed up software.(wich alows you to change your keybord prefs).

@Michelle: extend the 25 layers out to the end of your comp, or the end of whenever you want them to go away, and make sure they all stop at the same point. Andrew does this but does not say it like it is a step.

Hi andrew!! i find your tutorials amazing, but i am having a little issue with this one. The result you get on 8:15 is not what i get. All my compositions are at the exact same place. not a different time from the original animation that we did. I've followed your steps OVER and OVER again to make sure i didnt do anything wrong and i keep getting it the same way. I dunno if its because im using CS4. I tried continuing on to see if maybe later it would fix itself but the result i get is that from the middle the set of rings start moving until it makes the image then it starts to disappear from the middle outwards.. and thats not what happens to you... can u please help me.. i really want to do this effect.

Getting that X across my screen on renders. Anyone resolve that patterning of the dots? He touches on it in the tutorial but a solution is never addressed (he thought it was the resolution of the preview but that did not fix it).

Did post this on the previous one but does apply here.
Interesting there is a way you can instance those effects in the stack!! so any changes will be global.
Try this
Create new adjustment layer
make it a pre comp
THEN DELETE THE AJUSTMENT LAYER INSIDE THE PRE COMP (just go with it)
Create new adjustment layer in side that pre comp and add you effects to it.
Then that pre comp can be used as may times as you like but make changes to the effects inside it and they will be global
Interesting there is a way you can instance those effects in the stack!! so any changes will be global.
Try this

BTW for: Steveo "how to you change it from seconds to frames..."
Hold down <CTL> and click on the current time display down on the timeline.

I've been using the CC Ball Action for a while (I'm the one that originally mentioned it for the DNA coil.)
It's good for doing 'molecules' and 'atoms' too.
One tip on using it for those is making a color map that will be the different atom colors and apply the CC Ball Action on top of that. The balls can even move around (using the 'instability' setting) and because of the color map the right 'atoms' will stay in the right place.
I also use it to represent 'pixels' if I do a promo advertising a still camera i.e.: "....this camera has 10 mega-pixels!" I show the 'pixels' flying in (animating the scatter setting) to converge into a pretty picture.

For all those, who are using European Keyboards:
First switch your Keyboard to English (US) to solve the "ALT" "In/Out-Bracket"-problem. You will find the the brackets-key [ ] on the right side to your "P"-Key. For example on German keyboards it´s the "Ü"- and the "*".
For any other countries:
It´s the upper row of character-keys (the row without the numbers!), you´ll find your brackets below the lower left corner of the backspace-key and directly on the left side of the Return/Enter-Key.

First switch your Keyboard to English (US) to solve the "ALT" "In/Out-Bracket"-problem. You will find the the brackets-key [ ] on the right side to your "P"-Key. For example on German keyboards it´s the "Ü"- and the "*".
For any other countries:
It´s the upper row of character-keys (the row without the numbers!), you´ll find your brackets below the lower left corner of the backspace-key and directly on the left side of the Return/Enter-Key.

This looks awesome and I'm a big fan but this one could be done a lot quicker and with way less layers using Trapcode Form and an animated mask comp.
But I guess the end result is what counts and this looks great.

"Sequence Layers" window has an "Overlap" Option. So without playing with cropping layers length you can do the same thing, I mean sequence layers by 1 frame. You'll just need to do some simple math But that's not a big deal.

Yep, nice tutorial again! But as Kevin below was asking about the Mac keyboard shortcut, I would like to know it too. Alt begin bracket and end bracket. Because those symbols in Mac comes from Alt the key, I can't add anymore Alts to that.

I was trying to wrap my head around how you did your example in the blog a couple of days ago before posting this tutorial using, what seemed to be, such a simple plugin and I wasn't able to. Criss, CC Ball Action comes with AE. It's a Cycore FX product. In CS3 and later it installs automatically with AE, but in 7 or under (6.5 is the lowest) it was included on the installation CD in the Goodies folder.
