First and foremost.. AWESOME tutorials!

Since AE isn't a video editing software per say.. do you chop footage..add effects in AE.. then re-compile footage in your video editing software? I'm new to this so don't hate me for asking dumb q's :)

I just feel I wanna use these effects in ALL my videos.. but adding each clips seems very time consuming.. any advice?

Thanks, your the man!

Hi!
thanks Andrew for your cool stuff!! i was watching this tutorial when i had this idea: i'll shoot all my footage very sharp from near to far to control it in post-prod. but is there a way to make this when u have 1 actor near the camera and 1 far from it? to make a kind of rack-focus?
thanks

I may have answered my own question, above...at least in part.

You see, when you pre-compose, I think you have to leave all attributes in the new composition (it's one of the two options whenever you pre-compose). Somehow, my default was NOT to leave all attributes in the new composition. I think that's what was causing my problem. Now it's working...except the lens blur/gradient is now confined to a smaller square within the image (perhaps because my original graphic is larger than the comp size). Anyhow, I'm most of the way there! I love Andrew Kramer. And I mean that in a totally gay way! Thanks!

Thank you! But I'm having a huge problem. Maybe my After Effects program is malfunctioning. But it seems to do everything else just fine...so I think it must be a setting.

When I apply lens blur--no problem. I get a blurry image.

Then when I add the new solid with a ramp, and make it invisible, and pre-compose it, the blur in my lens blur becomes nil. That is, as soon as I create the luminance matte (pre-composed as you describe) and associate my lens blur with the matte, I get NO blur at all. It's like the lens blur is suddenly switched off. It seems to do this with all blurs, not just lens blur.

In your tutorial, as soon as you apply the matte, the image takes on the blurred attributes of the luminance matte, whereas all my blur disappears completely. When I try to adjust the blur on the image, I get no change. It's like something is overriding the blur. It has no effect. Very very frustrating. I keep doing it over and over to no avail.
