Thinking particles for beginners 3ds

Postby Esperado on 08/27/2016, 7:21 am

Trying to find tutorials that covers the basic stuff like collision with floor and objects. Beginners tutorials for 3ds max. Found some, but they stop after showing how to make an emitter.

Someone got any good sites or links?

Can someone tell me how to make my particles interact with floor object? dont understand witch node/operator to use. Got them assigned to an object and they respond to gravity, taking the object with them, but fall through my box/floor.

This is like a lost treasure of VFX, basically the best tutorials on TP out there. :)

http://velevfx.com/topics/tutorials/tp/andrewtptuts/

And Hristo's own commercial tutorial series are badass too - though only available commercially, if even that, nowadays. I saw them years ago, but seeing TP hasn't changed much (lots of added stuff, but the workflow is identical), they are still about as good a TP tutorials you'll ever find.

That being said, TP is inside Max. Max makes me cry. ;)

Glad it helped.

Funny, I could probably jump into TP and setup shit as well as I did 2 years ago, but I don't remember a thing from memory, I would have to see the gui and node names to remember anything, hehe... :P

Got another question...

When it comes to animated objects, do i animate the usual way with keyframes.. or inside thinking particles via some node or something?
(Strange things are happening)

I animated a plane going down and want thinking particles to take over at a certain frame, ..apply gravity ,rotation and speed based on the keyframe animation.

No, if I remember correctly you have to do a bait and switch type setup, animate to a point and then hide the object and have a separate setup with the object as particle in TP - though I might be completely wrong.

You can animate an object, i'm guessing you want to do it and then use a ObjToParticle node to import it? That is totaly doable.

You can even animate objects (also with modifiers) and add them in with GeomInstance and then create animation state sets like game engines do. These animation states can be activated base on whatever condition :)

Same thing with Materials and Material animation ofc :)

I think he meant inside TP. :)

But I might be mistaken. :)

"I animated a plane going down and want thinking particles to take over at a certain frame, ..apply gravity ,rotation and speed based on the keyframe animation."

This to me sounded like he did regular keyframe animation and then wanted the object to be taken over by TP, that is all doable :)
Just make sure you give the object the current velocity, alignment etc so the transitioning will be smooth.

Hehe, yeah, that's what I meant with bait and switch, you do the animation in Max and at some point you let TP take over - though I don't remember how you did that, 2 years in Houdini now, TP feels like a far away memory. :P

I wasn't very clear. I meant animate to a point (in Max) and then let TP take over - I wanted to clarify you don't do the animation in TP. I think I failed that goal. ;)

I forgot to mention something that i barely use but its the "Initial velocity" in the Objtoparticle, that would work aswell.
