Critique please

Postby Cutterone on 04/30/2016, 4:19 pm

All,

Here is my first test render using E3d and first time working with the Metropolitan pack as well. I'm looking for some critiques on this as I know it's not "pefect" but I'd like to get some feedback from others. Is the glow too much? Is the camera pan too "smooth"? Like I said, I'd value getting some feedback/suggestions/advice from those "in the know".

For the sake of context, this is a rough idea for a shot panning across a city as an actor says some line in a voice-over. The shot would end with a green-screened shot of the actor as if he is overlooking the city.

Here's the link:

Thanks guys.

I really like it, and inside a film I would be convinced it was real if I was not constantly thinking about how shots are done.
it was good enough that I actually had to look for the flaws and reasons it doesn't look real, and the only one I could find is that the glow is a little too intense, but there are a few things you could do. First thing you could do is reduce the intensity, Second thing you could do is change the color to a slightly darker shade of grey. also I love the lens flare!

-Edit-
Looking at it again later I also think that you could use 2 cloud images instead of one, make 2 copies of each (four cloud layers total) (and you make one an inverted trackmatt with sky replacement tools, and the second can be normal. This way you have proper transparency) and push the second copy back into Z space.
This way when the camera pans you will have depth to the clouds for added realism

Its late so please forgive sloppiness and spelling errors
Good luck

I like the Sunray effect and the overall image. Main problem for my eye would be the non-reflective windows.

I am trying to combine E3D and live footage right now. The two things that helped me quite a bit were
- image based lighting
- enviroment reflection map

Both explained by Andrew Kramer in this video

Sorry for not responding sooner guys, my apologies.

CaptainWolf - Thank you for the kind words and the critique. I totally agree that the glow may be too much, good to have my suspicions confirmed. As for the clouds, thank you for the tip, I hadn't thought of that. I'll give it a try.

Life Effects - Thank you too for the kind words and critique. I'll work on the window reflections, as "glass" and how it interacts with the environment is one of my pet peeves. Thanks also for the link to AK's tutorial.

One of the things I was thinking of adding to the shot to help "sell" it better is having maybe 2-3 of the buildings have steam coming from the roof vents, and maybe some random pigeons flying through the shot (as we all know, birds add realism to effects shots).

Any thoughts on the best way to add the steam. I was thinking of tracking some of the vents and then parenting some tweaked Action Essentials 2 footage to them, or maybe tracking in Mocha AE and using the corner pin technique AK did a tutorial on. Thoughts/Recommendations?

Thanks again.

Steam and Birds are a good idea.
In a scene that i am working on i used the buildings aswell. I added animated motion design structures to the same Element layer.

For smoke i am gonna check how particular works with element.

The first version of the base was looking like that:

I added a few buildings and on the roof are some rotating towers. On the account you can see a few added things like a laser barrier. I am not entirely sure about the final look i am heading.

I think i will create a work in progress video since i will need alot of time to complete this one. :)
