how can I break up OBJ's in Maya

Postby breakingdecency on 07/13/2012, 4:19 pm

Can anyone tell me how to break up obj's so that they come in to element 3d as separate pieces? I've tried breaking it apart and exporting and putting the individual pieces on separate layers and no luck. Am I missing something in the export settings maybe?

thanks

I was wondering the very same thing. I feel like I've tried everything. I've even tried opening up the OBJ files from the starter pack in Maya to see how they are constructed, and I can't figure out the trick to getting the materials to be split up. In fact, if I import the watch, for example, from the Starter Pack into Maya, then export it as an OBJ from Maya, then import it into Element, it is brought in with one single material. So it must either be a bug with OBJ files exported from Maya, or some setting...

EDIT: Just figured it out. When you export an OBJ from Maya ("File/Export Selection"), you must have all the "File type specific options" turned on. Most notably, "Materials" and "Groups". That did the trick for me.

Awesome. I went through the exact same process looking through the files and importing the watch. Thanks for the reply.

I'm still having problems, I've tried separating all my polys and exporting; I've tried grouping sections of my model, and exporting; I've tried Combining different parts and exporting that way; and I still can't get it to import split up. Im using Maya 2012 and can't seem to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I have all the "File Type Specific Options" checked and I don't know what else to do. I've tried exporting using Export Selected, and Export All options. Any thoughts?

Do you have a step by step on fracturing objects in Maya?

I don't believe you can fracture objects in maya without a plug in.

You can use the "Shatter" function in dynamics to fracture an object in MAYA.

To give an example of my scene set up and my export settings here's a screen shot. I still haven't been able to successfully import a separated OBJ into Element. As you can see in my screen shot every part of the model is separated into it's individual group, additionally I've tried freezing transformations and deleting all the history. >-||

Triangulate the mesh? I have MAYA 2011 and I was able to get a very complex model (100+ pieces) to come import into ELEMENT with different materials listed for each piece. I even had a ton of subgroups that I didn't break up and it all came perfectly. I did select the geometry and did "Export Selection" rather then saving the scene as .obj.

More information, I sent the OBJ I created in Maya to Blender. Inside Blender in appears broken into groups, could this be an issue with Element 3d? I know the switched to the objExport.Bundle plug-in for Maya 2012, maybe that's the problem? Thoughts?
