Making a logo 3D with Element

Postby IndyJones1023 on 07/11/2012, 1:31 pm

Love this plugin already, but we seem to be hitting a stumbling block. I searched here and can't find any pertinent info. How can we take a logo (AI, EPS, PSD, whatever) and make that 3D?

Select your paths in AI and copy them. Then paste them to a solid in AE. (AE may add a rectangular mask around your paths, delete it) Then in a separate solid add Element. Twirl down Custom Layers and Custom Text and Masks and select your layer. Then click Scene Setup to open the UI and click the Extrude button

Edit- also watch http://www.videocopilot.net/help/elemen ... e_3d_text/ it's all the same principal.
The reset button was my idea.

Awesome, thanks for that! A little cumbersome, but completely doable. What if a logo isn't an AI file, though? What if a client gives us a PSD with transparency?

Umm, I guess you could bring it in to AI and Live Trace it?

I'm not an AI guy, I'll look into that.

Not having CS6 I thought turning AI files into beautiful 3D with element would be awesome. I was right but apparently there are a few issues. Obviously Element doesn't work with AI files but like bwoogie said selecting the paths into AE works just fine. original in illustrator:

copied into AE:

But then after duplicating the solid and deleting the different paths(so I can have two materials) and adding the two custom layers and adding the textures the logo doesn't look like it should: Image

And after repositioning it still looks really off

I didn't resize anything, I simply used group 1 position XY and moved it in Y position :(

You can also select a layer and then go to LAYER...autotrace.it will put a mask around your object then use that layer in e3d custome mask feature.
