Help with shadows with a Paralell light

Postby Rui Manuel on 08/8/2019, 7:50 am

Hello all. Can somebody please help me on this :

I need to cast a shadow of a Element 3d object on an Element 3d plane as a usual shadow catcher. No problem.

The problem is the object is moving and I want its shadow to keeps always the same relative angle on the plane, like an object and its shadow moving under the sun in the real world.

When I use a Paralell light the shadow keeps changing its angle on the floor as the object moves.

Considering the Parallel light is infinite, why this happens and how am I supposed to get a constant shadow angle as the object moves on the surface?

Thank you very much!

PS: on his official website documentation, Videocopilot confirms the possibility of using Paralell lights with Element 3D objects.

Hello Rui Manuel ,

it's working well with a parallel light.
Are you sure, you don't have another Spotlight in your Scene?
See my attached Video (parallel- spot-light with shadows).

Hi there, Hans,

Thank you so much for your great answer.

No, I dont have spot lights in the scene, just the Paralell light.

However I can see that in your video it is working properly, so I will digest your video and your settings better and give feedback soon.

Again, thank you for your time.

Hello Rui,

thank's for the Feedback.
One Thing to remember:
If you use 'Shadow Mapping' and you see a 'Shadow Clipping',
increase 'Shadow Size' >>Render Settings >>Shadows >>Parallel Light >>Shadow Size.
See the Videoclip. I've attached the simple AE-Project also (CC 14 Format).

Hope it will help you
Hans

Hans,

Thank you very much, specially for the Parallel / Shadow Size tip :D
Because yes, I was getting clipped shadows.

I am grateful for your time.
Best!
