Well, you're gonna need After Effects, too; but yes, Video Copilot products may come in handy.

Watch this tutorial: http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorial/energy/

Andrew creates a small tornado with the CC Particles World effects (included in After Effects). If you change the color and the number of particles per secondes...

And you can also try this:

A realistic tornado is not an easy task, well, not for those with my SPFX AE skill set. I'm sure Andrew would have little if no trouble doing so, but I've seen it done competently using After Effects and VideoCopilot's "Real Clouds," which supply the realism to a satisfactory degree. The idea is to use one of the storm cloud scenarios and create the funnel using a mask and rotating it 90 degrees, shaping it, animating it and adding bits of swirling debris to provide the illusion it's spinning. I suppose you could go as far as going 3-D and wrapping the mask into a cone shape and actually spinning it, but that increases the work and thus the time exponentially, for me anyway. Hopefully Andrew has seen these posts and would graciously provide an "all weather" tutorial on creating realistic weather including lightning (in the clouds and striking the ground,) a tornado, varying degrees of wind, a rockslide, a glacier, an earthquake, a dust storm…I could go on but I doubt Andrew would find it any more amusing than a back alley root canal. Seriously, Andrew. A realistic tornado would be R-E-A-L-L-Y appreciated.

Why are you awakening a 3-year-old thread? Let it slumber in peace! :)

if you can get your hands on it try particle illusion. it has a tornado particle preset. you can import your footage, animate the tornado and render it out with an alpha channel for use in ae to composite. combustion has particle illusion built into it but combustion isnt used that much any more

Sometimes I find myself looking through old posts and get so involved that I forget that its really old (or I just don't look at the date in the first place), so I respond to it.
