Motion Tracking Nightmare – Is it impossible?
Hey guys!
I've been working on this shot (there are actually two shots that need work but can't get passed this one and it's the simple one) for a quite some time. I cannot seem to get a good track. I've tried the built in AE tracker (both camera and motion), I've tried mocha, I've even tried stabilizing the footage to reverse engineer the problem.
I think the rolling shutter is really what's causing me so many problems. Here is the clip with some really poorly tracked VFX.
Any ideas how to get this stuff to stick?

If you haven't tried using Mocha, you could track the dots on the wall as well as the thermostat. In unison it should be a good enough track to deal with.

Since it is a short shot, you can manually track two points with the point tracker frame by frame to a decent result.

I am going to give Mocha another shot. I think I may need to do it as two separate tracks like star+circle said.

What are you going to add to this once you have tracked it ??
If it was me, I would just manually track it with the point tracker, it's so quick anyway.
Cheers

Have you tried the built in rolling shutter reduction? That might minimize some of the sliding you're getting. You also might try matching the distortion on your asset by hand using warps. A short shot like this is usually a frame by frame job
