How can i blend 2D animation layers with 3D geometry?

I'm trying to do the Parappa the Rappa approach by placing 2D transparent animated gifs onto 3D platform. When i try doing it using the 3D Element plugin for After Effects it doesn't seem to sync in with the 3D modeling.

It's not super easy to tell what's going on in your image, but a few things to start with would be your 2D layers with your Gifs on them definitely have to be 3D layers. Once they're 3D layers, then you need to get them in the correct position in 3D space. To do that you need to use Element's functionality for generating a Null in 3D space at a location on the model that you click. I think it's called Find 3D Position. I'm not at my editing computer and it's one of those things that I can't remember in my head exactly how to do it but I'm pretty sure there's a Utilities rollout under your Element 3D instance in the effects panel. Good luck! What you're trying to do shouldn't be too hard unless you want your 2D sprites to be obscured by part of your 3D model. Matching that sample image should be pretty simple though.

Also, the Element 3D layer should NOT be turned into a 3D layer. E3D is already a 3D effect, so turning it into a 3D layer will give you a "double" 3D transformation, the first one from the effect itself, the second from transforming the layer in 3D in AE. That is like projecting a 3D image onto a screen and then also moving the screen around.

Sorry dude, could you please show me a visual example of this? I've tried linking the picture with the null and there is no difference. However i have tried to put 2d pictures standing ontop of the 3d cube, but at the same time it seems to be "see through" through the 3d geometry.
