Projection Mapping in AE?

Postby jkeith00 on 09/30/2018, 2:25 pm

I'm just getting into digital decorating and want to learn to create my own content. For the decorations to work, video and other content need to be transformed/skew to specific portions of my projection map. Can this be done with AE?

Image 1 is the projection map. Image 2 is the map with two separate video elements overlayed. The boy playing guitar is a video clip constrained to my garage door while everything else is animated decoration. Link below is an actual video sample of the desired outcome.

I don't think you can get what you want out of After Effects very easily. There are free software programs that do projection mapping out there if you don't want to spend the money.
Here is a website that talks about the different types out there:

Good luck

Is anyone actually using any of those free programs that are listed? I'd love to hear a recommendation or two.

AE is plenty fine for reproducing the example you linked.

What is commenly misunderstood regarding projection mapping, is that most of the magic happens with the projectors.

I did this one last year purely in AE (well a bit of C4d, but that has nothing to do with the projection - spot any VC plugins?): (best audience cam I could find quick) and 1 with some more graphic elements: 3 projection towers with 3 canons in each to cover the different angles of the buildings. Most highend projectors can do som alpha matting/overlay internally and the rest is up to your media server for delivery.

On an AE note, I made every picture as a regular 16:9 comp as the projector would see it, and a master comp where I overlayed the 7 comps and matched to the surface of a reference pic of the building with a simple corner pin.
