VFX Knoll Light Factory (REDGiant VFX Suite)

Improve and Enhance Video Copilot Plugins

VFX Knoll Light Factory (REDGiant VFX Suite)

Postby LovingApathy on 06/19/2019, 6:15 am

RG made an announcement highlighting Knoll Light Factory stating the plugin was "Built by ILM’s Chief Creative Officer, John Knoll"
..it's clearly Optical Flares 2.0 but doesn't have any mention of VideoCopilot

Does RG have the rights to Optical Flares now.. or is this some shared licensing with RG and VC?

Either way, here's a summary:
Optical Flares bundle package is $165 and the Knoll Light Factory is $199

You could get the Action Essentials and Optical Flares bundle package for the same price as the RG plugin ;)

That's an interesting point, however another consideration to consider is the R&D and support related to the product. While VCP does still offer support and some minor maintenance to many products, there is little/no active development that we can see on the plug-ins. There may be active product development behind the scenes at VCP, but there have been no major releases or updates in a very long time, years in most cases. Element3D v2.2 came out in 2015 and Optical Flares in 2011. They are excellent products, to be sure, but they are rather old, too.

I am not saying any of this to be contentious. I own a good deal of VCP products, and continue to use things like E3D and Optical Flares. However, things have been very quite for a very long time. I still hope to see a resurgence of activity and development from my favorite site.

As far as I know, Knoll Light Factory predates Optical Flares by about 20 years.

Yeah, it's been around over 25 years. John Knoll developed VFX plugins such as Knoll Light Factory at Industrial Light and Magic (aka ILM) while working with George Lucas. He's been nominated for several Oscars and has won at least one.

I definitely agree that it would be fantastic to see VCP being more active and interactive with their "public", they're still doing development afaik though ("Nebula 3D" they demoed at NAB in Vegas this year should be out anytime I think).

I feel like Andrew and the rest of the crew are doing a lot of industry work these days, which I suspect was what the dream always was. So the whole "rock star viral tutorials guy with a cult following" thing is not surprisingly getting kicked back to the back burner. Fantastic for Andrew, sucky for us, such is life.

To the OP, RG had their lens flares out in conjunction with John Knoll prior to 2010 when VCP's Optical Flares first came out. Knoll had his original flare plugin for AE out in 1995 so quite a while before VCP.

Now that being said, they did just add a ton of new presets for Knoll Light Factory that I read that they "commissioned an industry professional" to create, so that could easily be Andrew Kramer himself, it's hard to say.
