Do you want to be a VFX artist or MoGraph artist? There is some overlap but they're two different disciplines. Specialist (focus on one area like roto, tracking, keying....) or generalist (good at a lot but not great at anything)? Where do you want to work?

From a technical standpoint, the best thing you can do is be good at learning software. Learn other 3D apps like Maya. Learn node based compositing with Nuke. Expand your skillset.

Fortunately Nuke has a fully functioning non-commercial version available for free. The only real limitation is that you can only output 1080 or less and can't use it for paying gigs. Natron is another good option. It's an open source clone of Nuke, but currently lacks 3D and particles. But you can use it on paid gigs and there's not resolution limit. If you learn one, you know the other.
