Hi eggy, welcome. Not sure why you are using a 2 node camera when the 3 node camera does what you need?

Sorry eggy, had a brain-fart, my apologies. You may find if you post this in the Expressions Forum you might get readier and more useful help. Just curious, since you can select your point of interest in the camera settings what problem are you having?

You can press the camera's Point of Interest stopwatch + Alt (this will create an expression), then select the pickwhip (the curly symbol that will appear) and drag it to the solid or null's position setting. This will link the Point of interest to the location of the solid/null. Is this what you need?

Just to make up for me being an idiot, some further thoughts. You may not need this but if you want the layer to always face the camera;
Select the layer
Layer/Transform/Auto Orient/Orient Towards Camera.
