Harry Potter Type Magic

Postby usualgang on 08/2/2008, 11:07 am

By no means am I a fan boy of the Harry Potter series (I am a fan though haha) but I do love the effects in the movies. I decided to try my hand at it, and used Particular to create this test video. Just a black BG with the effects, I am awaiting Andrews motion tracking tut to possibly put it into a scene. Tell me what you think and what could make it better. I was thinking a little more turblance on the beams that meet in the center.

Also youtube kills the quality on it, so it isn't as fuzzy as it appears haha...

Nice try, but it's not completely like the movie, but again, that may not be what you were going after.
In the movie the beams were more lightning-like, thinner.

But the effect itself is cool, could maybe be a little more turbulent.
Looking forward to the scene :)

Yea, I would like to know how to produce Harry Potter Magic. I was browsing youtube and saw this video by Mastermike7000:

I thought that this was a great look a like to the films, and if anyone knows how this is done, I think that we all could learn.

That would be a sweet effect to learn!! Particle Systems with Advance Lightning maybe? Maybe we could convince AK to enlighten us!!

I'm going to agree with Strandli that they all need a little bit more movement to them to really make them awesome.
They all look really good though. Its just about going to the next level :D

I had used particles and advanced lightning:

i had made this video as a demonstration for school about a year ago

that's really cool matt. The camera shake really adds a lot to the feel of the clip

Matt how did you get the string of particles to come off of the energy burst in the center, I haven't tried to do it yet, but am a little lost as to where to start. The only thing I don't like about the Advanced lighting is it isn't 3-d so if you want to add a nice camera turn, it might look crappy, but I don't know. Love to get more insight on this though, I doubt it will be a tut, it can be achieved quick, you just have to know how to work particular.

The "bolts" comming out of the persons hands can be done useing the effect used in this tutorial. The center effect can be done with a particle system like Trapcodes Particular or CC Particle world, the key is to have a floor plane that the particles bounce off of. That is what sells this type of shot.

In physics switch it from air to bounce, then from there you can create a 3-d solid that acts as the floor and postion it. Then just go into the bounce options and add the floor plane layer.

Hard to say, i would say he just cut out the logo. But he oviously uses cloud footage in the background and some fog footage and the lightning effect.

yes...the clouds would probably be something off artbeats...but thats no the problem..
yes..i see some smoke...and all...
but that texture...all looks kinda like 3D...
Andrew said hell make a 3D text tutorial someday...i wonder what hes using...
ive heared bout Zaxwerks plugins for 3D text...but i dunno if its any good. :?

There is many plugins to make a layer look like it's in true 3D. I know Maltaannon has made one, you could check that out. It has a couple of problems when rotating it in 3D-space, but other than that it works great.

It's defientaly not 3-D, it reminds me of a tut Andrew did awhile back showing how to animate title sequences. I would bet what the guy did to make it look good was add some glow or shine or something (I can't remember what the effect is called that Andrew used to give it that shine) and on top of that the Text is probably precomposed where in a different comp he has it as a stencil with the a texture file underneath. I bet it is pretty easily attainable effect to do if you know where to get the goods and how to apply them.

would u be kind, and post the link to that specific AK tutorial youre talkin' bout? i just dunno which one you meant exactely.

about the texturizing, i guess u mean he, like, put a texture on the text...and used a blending mode like "screen" of something? ....guess u need the texture to move with the text as well, then. right?

When you precompose the text in a different comp the texture on it will move with the text no matter what, that's the beauty of a precomp. Stencil alpha is a blending mode, it works like screen but it takes the white text and makes it "hollow" in a way that whatever is underneath it show through, then with a couple of color adjustments and some glow, you can get some nice text.

The tut I was talking about was the fly by titles that Andrew did, if you just apply some of that tut to your precomp you can get a nice looking Harry Potter title.

Here is the tut: http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/f ... by_titles/

Easily possible with realflow, Ill do it up and those that have the software can use it, Ill upload the scene file.
