-3D- Hogwarts Castle

======================================================================
I have decided to put up the entire Hogwarts Castle scene (including Quidditch pitch) for free, all I want in return is a thank you and some credit in whatever application it is used for! (And please don't simply resell it, I put a lot of work into it and I'll be pissed :) )
Look at my last post for a bit more info.......but here it is:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/1cc3se
Let me know if the link goes down and i'll re-up it.
Enjoy!
PS: It is a 3ds Max file, so sorry for those of you who use other programs. If someone would like to convert it to other formats, I would be extremely thankful. It would be cool if it wasn't simply exclusive to one (expensive) modeling program.

I've always been a big fan of Harry Potter, and have always loved the castle itself, so I finally decided to model it. I want this to be a big project which I can keep adding on to until the entire castle is finished. Because there are so many different buildings and objects to build, I am hoping it will be a big learning experience for me. Even from what I have so far, I have learned quite a bit. Fyi, I am working with 3ds Max for this model. ;)

I have blocked out the whole South-East corner of the castle, so right now I am modeling each building, then replacing the blocks with the finals.

That's a really great looking model(s)... How long have you been modeling?
Are you going to texture it also?

Yea i'm definitely going to texture, all though how detailed, i'm not sure.

As for how long i've been modeling? Eh... a couple of years all together, but I keep taking looong breaks. So only a few months if it was all done non-stop. This project is sort of my "get back into it" type thing. I've been taking too long of breaks, and I need to practice more if I ever want to make a career in CG.

DUDE!!! That's freaking awesome!!! Nice work. I wanted to do this myself but being a very new 3D artists I could probably do like 1/1000th of what you've done.

Can't wait to see it completely finish :)

Thanks for the reply :D

Finally another update... North tower this time. I'm still very early in the creating of this building... just a small section done so far.

Well, this will probably be the last update for today... Any critiques? Obviously only on the more finished models, not the buildings that have only been blocked out so far.

Outstanding work!!!
Very insperational. (now I want to finish my project)

Can you please tell me what you are using as refference?

How did you decide on a level of detail? I always find this difficult,
since I build for myself and not for a client.

Thanks everyone for the comments! I'm sorry for not replying for so long, but I wanted to have something substantial to post.

Anyway, to answer your question for the level of detail eddyeddy, I build for myself as well, and therefore decide what level of detail I will add to my models. For this particular scene, I want it to be as much of a learning experience as it can be, so my goal is to basically add as much detail as I possibly can before running out of experience and/or patience. :D

I'm not as good a modeler than I would definitely like to be, and I think this huge castle will be enough to improve my skills a bit. (I think it will ;) ) Right now the level i'm hoping for eventually is to be fairly realistic from a person's vantage point, but at the moment it is FAR short of that. I do hope to eventually composite a few scenes for fun with myself and maybe a couple friends. I think it would be interesting to see how realistic I can make a "real" environment.

As for reference pictures, I have looked all over the internet and there are surprisingly few pictures of the castle itself. I actually bought a high-def version of the 3rd movie which has the most views of the castle from the outside of any.

Anyway, here is a new wip picture of some new stuff i've modeled, hopefully i'll get some more done soon. :)

Cheers!

the modeling is really good. Its just your textures that let it down somewhat. Have you been uving it as you went along or do you have to do all the UV's at the end? Looks really good, I'd love to have it as a set for my animations

Thanks, i'll probably put it online someday for people to use if they want.

As for the textures, there is only one texture added to anything so far and that's the ground in the courtyard. Apart from that, I have done absolutely no texturing yet. That will come after the modeling for me. :)

That is a fantastic model! Looking forward to seeing the finished job (and hoping that you will release it for use when its finished). I would actually pay to use it.

Thanks :)

If I put the model out for download, i'll make sure its free don't worry [=

Anyway, I have a bit of an update on the courtyard... It took me quite a while to figure out how to model the individual stones into the wall but I think I got them looking pretty good... I hope they aren't too uniform ||-<

that's really cool... are those bump maps or is that real model geometry?
That is an incredible model... and it would be so cool to see it textured... and in a scene.

That is looking absolutely amazing!

I'm actually from the place where they shot the courtyard scenes (Durham Cathedral) and I think your stones may be a little too uneven
