as said above, yes, you can also get a 64 bit version of XP.
I have a 64 bit PC but run Vista Ultimate 32bit

Is there a way to get any program that runs to automatically run in XP SP2 compatability mode?

Depending on the hardware, I would double check that there are drivers for all of your stuff before you install a different OS on a computer that came pre-loaded with a different OS. Sometimes you can get these directly from a OEM like HP or Dell, but sometimes you have to bit of searching, it might be a good idea to get them gathered up before you decide to re-install.

I just built a 6 bit machine, but I am using 64 and 32 bit operating systems on it with no problems.

64 bit machines are 64 capable, they are not just limited to 32 bit operating systems.
Use Google, it will usually give you the answers you need, given you use the right search parameters.
