Bought 3D car model...how can I separate wheels???

Postby WhoisRip on 07/11/2017, 11:01 am

Hi all. I bought a 3D model of a Tesla and am opening the .obj in Element 3D 2.2.2

This is the model I bought:
https://3docean.net/item/tesla-model-3-silver/19665384

Now, I want to separate the wheels so I can have the front ones turn and even the chassis/hood come down during braking...much like Andrew Kramers tutorial with the police SUV rig:
http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/simple_car_rig/

When I import the model, all the tires and wheel elements tend to be on the same group:

How can I separate the wheels so the front are independent from the back? I already emailed the maker I purchased the 3D model telling him I need the front and rear wheels on separate groups, but they still aren't. This was his response:

"I exported it and re-import it just to make sure the wheels are split, and they are. Attached here you will find the obj file. Please make sure the software you use does no merge it on import as the car comes split into parts. Let me know."

PLEASE HELP! Thank you in advance!!

Ideally you would do this in a dedicated 3d program however, there is a switch within the element interface to see individual components as opposed to the materials of the model you've imported. You would have to go in and seperate each wheel. You would then duplicate the model for a total of five models. 4 for wheels and the fifth the body.

It's obvious you're kinda new at this so refresh with the tutorials or perhaps someone will set it up for you if you ask nicely.

I may consider it if you send me the model, I can take a look and see how much of a pain it might be.

Yes, the mesh view. I know. But when I put the wheels in separate groups, they do this....

You're gonna have to adjust the size and position and re-position them into position. Can't be easy all the time.

Ok, that I can handle...but can someone explain to me as to why this is happening? Doesn't seem logical...

The center positioning changes due to change in geometry, ie no car body.
