INTERSTELLAR: Making a black hole

Postby Faust on 11/10/2014, 6:28 pm

I saw interstellar this weekend and was blown away by the amazing and truly seamless effects work. I was fortunate enough to see the film in IMAX 70mm as well, and I believe that it is the most immersive film format ever (WAY more so than 3D and 48fps). The film is great as well, but the visual effects alone are worth seeing it (and on the biggest screen you can find). Here's an example of one of the biggest effects: the accurate rendering of a black hole. This is probably the most realistic black hole ever visualized, as it's based on real physics provided to Double Negative by Kip Thorne, one of the film's producers and a theoretical physicist himself. Since normal raytracers assume that light is traveling in a straight line, the effects team had to write a new render engine that could create accurate gravitational lensing effects.

I have dual citizenship with the United States and Florida.

As I use to say "science is like love: it can drive you crazy, but nevertheless you can't get enought of it"!
