My Element 3D work (so far...)

Postby SandrinoP on 05/21/2017, 4:05 pm

Hi everyone,
Currently I'm studying film editing at the Croatian Academy of Dramatic Art, but my main field of interest is VFX, which I hope to study during MA course.
I started using Element 3D three months ago, and here's the result so far:

My primary post-production software is Adobe After Effects with all its plug-ins and glory, but I also use Cinema 4D or sometimes Blender for 3D models fixing.

Since I'm into VFX from the very young age, I know the theory behind CGI compositing, and that's why I got pretty good with the Element in such short time, because it's very intuitive. Also the software offers me to do multi-pass compositing, which I prefer better than just setting my entire scene on one Element 3D layer (I use multiple layers for multiple passes), which often creates better results.

Most of all, a HUGE "Thank you!" to Andrew Kramer for his amazing work on those plug-ins. It made my life much easier :)

Really great lighting and colors! Did you use built-in ae lights for your scenes?

Thank you for your kind words!
Yes, I only used built-in AE lights to light the models.
The only problem I had is with the second Enterprise video (JJPrise), since the comp contained 16 lights and the AE has a limit of 10 lights to be visible.
Now what I did is to export the beauty shot on alpha layer first with the bottom of the ship fully lit, and then with the lights on the top of the ship. I used masking to blend the two shots in a single one (the border is on the edge of the dish, since it's the most neutral part of the ship).
