More Targets?

The new animation preset Sure Target has 10 built-in targets but what if you need more? Like eleven or even twelve? Well actually you can have as many as you want with this simple solution.

The Solution:
Here’s how it works, just setup your scene as described in the tutorial with a 3D NULL object, a camera and the Sure Target Preset. With this setup, you have 10 targets ready to go.

To add 10 more, simply add another 3D NULL object and apply the Sure Target tool. Now, to link these to the first NULL (so the movement isn’t interrupted), set the 10th Target of the first NULL to use second NULL as it’s target. So whatever is designated in the second NULL will be used once the first NULL is keyframed to 10. Just be sure to start animating the second NULL after the first one reaches 10.

With this method you can add as many as you want by setting the last target of each Sure Target NULL to a new NULL containing yet another set of Sure Targets.

Another Idea:
One thing to note is that “Targets” do not have to be still, you can have 3D layers that actually animate and the preset will follow the layers movement when it is reached. You could even use an additional Sure Target NULLs in...

After Effects Feature Requests?

UPDATE: Make your features come true, File a Feature Request with ADOBE!

Our buddy Todd Kopriva at Adobe just posted an article outlining top feature requests from the After Effects community in 2012 and while you browse the comprehensive list, do you see your top features there?

Here are a few of my top features that should be on that list!

Improve Expressions Speed:
As I outlined in 2010, expression run-time should be much faster! This feature is still high on my list because expressions are very powerful but can weigh down a project if they get too complex. I notice major speed hits when using complex expression like those generated from using Sure Target 2! http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/sure_target_2/

POSSIBLE SOLUTION: Red Bull!

Duplicate Layer Instances:
The option to make a copy of a layer with effects like Particular or Element 3D and have the effects sync throughout the project when edited. So if you change one instance, they will all change, but at anytime you can disconnect it from the group and customize individually. Basically when you repeat certain effects it can be cumbersome to go through the entire project and update the effects for each copy. This...

PLUG-INS
Experiment: Organic-Cam

Animating the Camera in After Effects has always been a fun and challenging proposition. We created several tutorials and even our free plug-in Sure Target to assist users get better results. In some cases these “results” are just too perfect so I wanted to create a simple way to give the camera a more hand-held feel of an imperfect camera guy or girl. One that doesn’t follow the motion perfectly…

I’m still figuring out how to work this into the site… either through a tutorial or preset but after we start rolling out the Demon Cam tutorials next week, keep an eye out!

Should Adobe Improve Expressions?

After working through a test project yesterday with the 3D orbit Preset, one of the things I noticed is how slow the expressions made my fairly simple comp. Admittedly, there were several expression connections but there wasn’t crazy rocket science equations that required cloud-computing. So, why so seriously slow?

It never really bothered me before but with the impressive speed performance that the 64-bit native After Effects CS5 brings, I can’t help but think of other areas in need of improvement besides my marriage (JOKE! I love you honey… but we need to talk.)

So before I present this to the folks at Adobe, who have been very open to new ideas, I wanted to post my thoughts and hopefully gauge community interest in such a core feature improvement and where it currently stands.

Look, expressions are fine for linking a few parameters together but for more complex systems, there has to be a way to make it faster and more integrated.  This would lead to more powerful custom presets and functionality and make certain work flows more practical.

Think of the POTENTIAL!! And I’m not talking about your teacher telling your mom, he thinks “Andrew has a lot of potential but he...

VC Plug-in Updates for AE CS5 x64

UPDATE: Twitch ZIP file updated. Thanks.

Alright! So many of you have upgraded to After Effects CS5 for all the 64-bit amazingness and so we have been working to update our 32-bit plug-ins to work with the new version. Of course we will continue to develop and support the our 32-bit plug-ins as well.

Here is what you need to know for VC Tools:

All of our Stock Footage, Music and Sound FX products like Action Essentials II & Pro Scores are already compatible with AE CS5, there is no update required. The free video Copilot Presets will also work in CS5 as well.

For our paid plug-ins such as Optical Flares, Twitch, as well as our free tools, Sure Target and VC reflect, After Effects CS5 requires a 64-bit version to work.

Here is the download information:

VC Reflect 64-bit

Sure Target 2 64-bit

Twitch 1.1 64-bit (Requires email address, re-use your current license)

Optical Flares 64-bit:

While working on the 64-bit update for Optical Flares, we ran into a small hitch that was going to change the way pop-out windows would behave on OS X. So we decided move forward on a new feature that would solve this problem and give people with larger screens more space.

Basically the Optical...
