Bold Type Project!
Sometimes you need to create a title that feels IMPORTANT without making it too flashy! One way to do that is with a texture and a cinematic fade! Usually a simple opacity fade leaves graphics looking washed out, but by color correcting the fade out, you can add color and contrast to the fade! I […]

[UPDATED] New Plug-in Trailer: ORB!

UPDATE: Orb Plug-in Now Available

Today I’m excited to share with you our new plug-in ORB! My little side project turned into a much bigger one and hopefully this plug-in will help your take After Effects to the next level!

Available next week!

Watch on Youtube!

Like all Video Copilot plug-ins, this one has evolved! At first I was making a tutorial with CC sphere but it was taking too much work to get it be 3D-Aware! So we decided to make our own plug-in from scratch using similar to Element 3D except just focusing on making a 3D Sphere!

And that’s when things got out of control! Needless to say this plug-in has even more capabilities than demonstrated here and I look forward to showing you all the handy new features!

Aerial Photography with JetStrike

One of the things I learned while creating the JetStrike teaser (in only 3 days!) is the importance of aerial photography. Part of making Jets look powerful and life-sized is shooting them in a realistic way. Of course we can add a touch of Hollywood’s hyper realism but starting with a foundation based on real aerial photographer is critical. With less than a week away from the JetStrike release, I figured I should share my findings.

Here are a few tips that helped me stay grounded while in the air.  I also learned the plural for Aircraft is Aircraft. Dang-it!

01. Camera Type:
Generally the camera is at a safe distance inside another aircraft with a long zoom lens. This is important to avoid the perspective distortion you get from wide angle lenses but it also helps to avoid the miniaturization of the models.  For this I used an After Effects camera with a long zoom like 5,000-10,000 which is equivalent to a 100mm or 200mm.

02. Camera Physics:
When the camera is mounted in another aircraft, there are limits to how fast and how safe this aircraft can follow a subject. Understanding this helps to avoid creating unrealistic movements that would not be possible and unrealistic.

It...

The Sound of 3D Space!

Here is another fun example using Element 3D in space! I’ll try to post a project file for the Earth later this week. Plus Element comes with a dead planet and high-resolution rock models that can be used as Meteors too. Time to finish that epic space adventure film!

3D Orbit FX

I found some time to play around with the powerful 3D Orbit preset and a free icon pack. I created small groups of Icons that were linked to a Null Object and then after making 6 groups, I used the 3D orbit preset to control the smaller spinning groups with a larger spinning group. Similar to how the moon orbits the earth and our earth orbits the sun. ( and our sun of course orbits William Shatner.)

Now, I also used expressions to offset the the layers in each group so the icons did not overlap each other like in this tutorial. Then by animating the values of the orbit preset as well as the scale and rotation of the Null Objects, you can come up with some fun stuff. I also set the layers “Auto-Orient Towards Camera” so they would not turn into flat paper and collapse the universe.

Now if it still doesn’t look good… just add some lens flares and take the rest of the day off! That’s what I did, CYA
