Honestly though, free or not... He never met any deadlines and still saying "coming then and then", but not delivering is getting really old. It's currently Thursday and he's a day late without any updates on why it's late and when it should be up is just annoying to say the least, especially after months of nothing (between the first teaser, till now is 2 months)... I think it's just better for Andrew to not say anything and just drop it when it's ready, it clearly seems like he's not good with deadlines, so don't set them

Y'all sh*tting over Andrew, after all that he's given us for free, and not one of you seem to be concerned that he may have been kidnapped by the freakin' FSB while in Russia!!

Seriously, you don't know whats going on; family issues? Health issues? Family health issues? There could be any number of reasons, far more important than any of us - no matter what you think he owes us - for his absence.

Besides, anyone who's been visiting this site for a while knows that VC started out as a supplementary income, a platform to showcase his own talents and raise his own profile. So what if he doesn't have as much time to be working on the website; he's living his dream and is now working on feature films using his OWN products. For all we know he may have been called in last-minute to work on one right now? Getting that bread and looking after his family is more important than placating ungrateful whinging pr*cks on the internet.

Look at everything he's given us for free, not just his time; tutorials and plugins - stuff that I've seen used all over the internet and even on TV here in the UK (and if you've ever visited the showreel/showcase section of the forums you'd know Andrews plugins have been used for TV spots all over the world... making US money; at no cost to us, no licencing issues, no free for non-commercial use issues.

Some of you need to learn to be grateful and show some humility.

Well said Shades! 100% agree. Andrew is a wonderful person and has given so much to us...FOR FREE!!! No one knows what's going on his personal life so stop moaning about it. He didn't have to give us any tutorials or plugins for free....and entertain us the whole time whilst doing it. So even if he eventually stopped VC I wouldn't be angry, I would be upset of course, but I would be thankful for everything he given us and taught us and wish him the best of luck. You should totally share some tips on getting smooth gradient backgrounds in AE :) The FX Console cover image, this image etc... Your backgrounds are always super smooth with zero banding. Mine struggles, even with 16 bpc + the noise trick...
32 bpc seems to work perfectly fine for me, to remove banding...

Time to let that one go I think... AK gives away more plugins and AE knowledge than anyone (remember ORB? Saber?) Only so much time in the day, but if it's that important, maybe ring up Sam Loya and make your own version...?

It's not that unusual for a film to be unreleased. There are many reasons, from lack of funds, time, quality, etc. Maybe there were some scenes that needed to be shot, but never were, and now it's too late. Maybe the concept or script didn't hold together on screen as well as they thought on paper. Maybe they lost interest. Maybe they moved on to a better project inspired by what they learned while making it. Maybe life got in the way.

It happens. It's the nature of the creative process as well as the film business. Move on. Make your own film.

@Noel Around six years ago when I was 13 got to know about Andrew Kramer and this website from a random youtube video. At that time I was fumbling with After effects and hitfim & didn't know how to use those softwares properly, but I wanted to learn too.
Andrew's tutorials changed everything. His teaching style, his way of looking at things inspired me more than anything.(I remember once he told not to watch his tutorials just to produce that final result in the tutorial, but to play around with the techniques he teaches) He really changed my life. His influence made me who I am today. I think AK's tutorials and plugins (E3D!) caused more and more people to join after effects community in recent years.
And yeah I totally agree to what you are saying. I will remember everything he'd done for the Afx community and I am really grateful for that.
Speaking of Intercept, I really wanted to see AK's own film. That's it. I know it's been a long time since intercept had announced and to hope for its release is naive. But I still want to see AK's own film one day. I keep that hope.
As for making my own film, yeah; I will do that in the future, when I have enough resources.

Agree with dewey. Free or not (and you must admit, for a free site, there is a lot of non-free content here as well), the lack of communication is quite unprofessional. Whats a crucial key to success in any business? Communication. I know this is not AKs only project, andI have no problem with solid, amazing content released twice or even once a year. But this business of teasing things and then absolutely nothing: total radio silence for month after month..... if youre going to tease something, maybe have it DONE first so it can be released quickly after announcing. Or have quick weekly updates. 30 seconds just to let those who legitimately respect you and love your work know youre still planning to deliver. Or not deliver (as in the case of Intercept.) Something: some communication. Bottom line, respect your audience, or let them go. You have amazing opportunities. No one begrudges you that and most people would understand if its time to phase out VC.

AK does not help himself here. Why make a statement saying a tutorial will be out on his return, only not to delivery.

The frustration is only compounded by previous long periods of silence then statements of aknologment and aspirations of being better with communication...

Communication is key here. The lack of it leads to poor expectation management. And a community waiting on a uncertain timeline...

The community invest in VC, and we all appreciate the free tutorials... But it feels like a bad taste has been left behind now.
What make it worse, AK acts like knowone gets frustrated and just continues like there is no issue..

What’s happened?? If it’s time to move on from VC, you have deserved it... but please just let everyone know and stop keeping everyone hanging around for no reason with ongoing uncertainty.

I owe a lot to Andrew Kramer and Video Copilot but I agree with you. The post about The Procedural Destruction is November 29 and I must say that more than a month of waiting implies something, something substantial now. All that Andrew shared with us was a precious gift. But I also understand that Andrew is reaping the fruits of his hard work in the world of cinema and TV. It is simply a matter of feeling a little bitter in the mouth, like a friend who disappears little by little, blurred. We all love you, Andrew. Video copilot always!
Agree. It's pretty much universally agreed that communication skills are key to any sort of success. This has become an obvious trend with VC and AK: announce. . . .silence for months. . . . tutorial or product drop. If the tutorials do indeed take so much time to put together, that's very understandable, however, why not wait until it's DONE, then tease it, then release a few days later? It shortens the anticipation arc and keeps users happy. Also it's very understandable that other projects and goals are being pursued, and that's amazing, and I'm happy for VC and AK's success, but again. . . . . communication.

It'll be interesting to see what Element 3d will do without Raytracing within After Effects...
yep... that's the word. AFX will soon be dropping Raytracing.

Hmm... now that I think about it, it'll be interesting to see what all the 3d plugins out there do about that.

It's time to jump ship here, Andrew helped us, we helped him too! (How? you say - by buying his products E3D et al... no, its time to 'man-up' here E3D is finished and AK is faking 3D and Kramer and AE and AE are to part company - Christian Michael is SPOT ON below, were kept in the dark, treated with contempt from AE and AK, just paying fodder for CC - well if this carries on I'm sacking the CC subscription - updates and honest or forget it.

Interesting that you think of software usage as a ship...
    instead of a tool.
You should have "tools" not ships and you should have a "tool box" or arsenal of things you use daily to get the job done.
    Noel
Been thinking about this post for a while. I admit to being a novice on now E3D interacts with AE. Does Element rely on AE ray-tracing? I had thought that E3D was faster because it used a work-around to simulate reflections IN PLACE of ray tracing.
    LWAddict
    E3D doesn't "rely" on raytracing...
BUT, when rendering with raytracing, albeit slower than the optimized renderer, the results are amazing.
This shouldn't be a show stopper though...
E3d has helped make more than a few mortgage payments here without raytracing turned on and I plan to use it as needed until it doesn't work anymore.
But one should NOT rely too heavily on any one piece of software or technique... you should amass an arsenal of tools and tricks and techniques and "understand" why each tools works, how to manipulate them, and think outside of the box.
Software worship will only have you serving lattes in the end.

    noel
Is Element 3D still under active development or is it now a legacy product?
Like many others, I use After Effects on a professional basis. Our company recently received emails from Adobe asking how we used 3D in After effects and its impact on our day to day production. When I read the email and the request from Adobe it all started to make sense. Since the day of the release of Element 3D V2, VC have had zero updates or acknowledgment of a V3. No tutorials, no mention, no nothing. The first tut after its release was so ridiculously left field.

And as Andrew is now an evangelist for Adobe and making it in the film industry, I (we) can only assume Adobe has paid VC to squash the E3D project and have plans to make it part of the Adobe production package.

This I guess isnt a bad thing for VC. I kinda get that if this is the case everything is kept on the down low for a reason. I could be 200% wrong, but at this stage in the game and the complete silence from VC on the subject, we are all entitled to our opinions and our posts as fans, at least gives the VC site hits on google. Personally, I feel the site drying up as the team have gone big time. If thats the case good luck to them. They earned it. truly :0)
    NinjaGsm
    I second that!
The almost total silence on tutorials and his recent tries tutorials are about faking 3D. But not a single tutorial or status update about E3D. But some of his insta posts he's ben playing with e3d. something fishy.
    Damien Chazel
#christian Michael. Andrew has not squashed E3D . You need to understand something Video Copilot is not a like typical business platform. They dont need to respect product cycle like Apple etc putting these same product by changing only few features every new year. He put a new product which is ground breaking that have a powerful impact on our current workflow. Andrew is an artist it will take his time to deliver a quality product that will surely be amazing. Why he dont do new tuts with e3d? He has already shown us what is possible now he cant do everything for us. He is developing e3dv3 right now with some very exciting new features. The wait will always pays off.
    Damien Chazel
how do you get information that Andrew is working on E3D v3? Are you a beta tester? I was at v2 :) Do you say anything, or will there be any object physics for E3D v3?
    Christian Michael
@ Damien Chazel, Your naivety and assumptions are so sweet, you must be new to the site and not familiar with the way VC have shown zero acknowledgement of E3D V2 since its release over 4 years ago. Well, other then technical support which has always been on par, thanks to Matt, Tino and crew. What I'm talking about Damien is not wanting new tuts of a product that's 4 years old, my response was to pratik's original post. And as Damian Pietrykowski says, you get your rock solid information on V3 from....?

Like I said, we are all entitled to our own opinion as VC gives us no option to think anything else. The team here at VC have grown exponentially and are making it in the film industry, and working with Adobe. They are making it, and to think while they are making it they still have time to update the site like they used to while climbing the ladder is well.. Naive.

But you go right ahead and think what you wish, while you're doing that, you're spending more time thinking than VC will spend updating the site this year. it seems fans/followers are keeping the site alive with hits more that VC themselves. and sobeit.

I'm super stoked for this one Andrew! I'm premiering a new short film later this month, and this would be the PERFECT final touch to the opening title. I'm greatly looking forward to this tutorial!

How does one say "welcome to another very exciting tutorial" in Russian?

Have always wondered.

I tried to crack the technique in this tutorial.
The only clues that I had is It requires no third-party plugins.
I jumped into AfterFX and I did a lot of things that doesn't really make any sense.
Finally I ended up with closing the project.

But I figured out something that is I'm not a great artist like Mr. Andrew Kramer.

All I found is Shatter effect is deployed here
This is the best thing that I can do.

Thanks for giving some work to my stupid brain Mr. Andrew Kramer. I guess

And You'er Back with an other tutorial thanks for that.....
I'm waiting for it....

Hey Andrew, I own a most of your products, I have been using element 3D for a long time, and I'm planning on moving to other plugins like Stardust which is a plugin that has Physical Dynamics Simulation, nodes and some nice features. I need to know if your planning on doing anything with Element 3D? or have abandoned that plugin?

Indeed, Stardust looks like a good plug-in to move onto. At least, it looks like it'd be good to have for stuff Element 3D just can't do, namely good particle effects.

I wish Andrew would announce any news regarding an Element 3D. Been waiting forever for .fbx support that was supposed to come in a future update. If it also came out with a physics/particle system to compete with Stardust, that would be a welcome surprise.

Stardust wants to be an overachiever. It can do a lot of things, but it struggles with most. You can do almost as much as Element does with Stardust, but it's much more difficult to control and it renders slower. You can do some decent particles and some decent physics sims, but it comes at the cost of REALLY SLOW frames, reaching the point where you actually lose interactivity. To be honest, if you want crazy sims and insanely looking systems, you're ALWAYS better off with a soft like Houdini. Element is great because it give awesome results for some uses you might need in AE (mostly motion graphics, but not really limited to that) WHILE being extremely fluid, fast and easy to work with.
I have to admit I'm personally looking forward to a v3 version, and I hope RTX from nvidia can bring some exciting stuff into AE (mainly raytraced reflections and refractions), but I have to admit, physics sims is not on MY wishlist for the new element. The only thing you can hope to get in terms of physics in AE are rigid bodies, and even then the interface would be limiting ... how about soft bodies? water? fire? smoke? grains? hair/wires? That's exactly why you also need something like Houdini or Blender in your pipeline. It's great to be able to keep staying in AE, but you have to know its limitations. And you can't sacrifice interactivity for the sake of extra features, cause fine-tuning those things rely on being able to iterate fast through results, so it actually defeats its own purpose.
And you don't have to take my word for it. Open a Stardust tutorial with a more elaborate results. See how they always cut when they press preview? See how they always enter the values instead of trying to find the right one through trial and error? Try downloading the demo and follow the tutorial. Press RAM preview and be amazed how long it takes. See for yourself that if you wanted to use that in production you'd waste a whole day for a 3 hour work because iterating trying out values takes ages. Understand those people did those projects prior to recording the tutorial and wrote down all the values they used. It probably took them days.

@Alex - Wow, thanks for that insight into Stardust, didn't realize performance for it is an issue. That's definitely something to keep in mind.

Andrew hinted a few months ago at an Element v3 planned for next year. We'll see.

@Kevin - Do you know where this hinting happened?

Even if true though, I do worry that hinting at anything sadly doesn't have much weight with Andrew. I mean, even when something's supposed to be officially "coming soon", it could mean literally years with Andrew. "Intercept" being a case in point. *friendly jab*
