Bold Type Project!
Sometimes you need to create a title that feels IMPORTANT without making it too flashy! One way to do that is with a texture and a cinematic fade! Usually a simple opacity fade leaves graphics looking washed out, but by color correcting the fade out, you can add color and contrast to the fade! I […]

Andrew, in optical flares, would be cool to have a "create null" feature so that one can see its 3d position from top view even if out of screen.
Possible?
Add a light to your scene and Scroll down to position Mode in OF.
Select 'track Lights". Now wherever you have positioned the lightm will be where the flare is.

This can also be used in Element 3D if you create a 2D position null and add its position to a light, then in OF, select track lights.

    Hope this helps

Thanks for the tip Christian. I am familiar with the solution you've suggested but I still find it a time and space consuming workaround and way too intricate for what I am after (which is just seeing the OF from top view when it is out of the viewport space). I don't own element 3d but I recall it having a "create null" feature which is probably exactly what I am talking about: one click>you have your reference. Or am I wrong? Like I've said I do not own element so it's just something I recal seeing while working at a studio as a freelance but maybe I'm wrong.
    Thank you anyway.

Or even better: forget about the "create null feature" and just make the OF little target gizmo visible at all times if the layer is selected, whether it's in the viewport or not, just like cameras, nulls and any other solid.
    Sean,

Using the "track lights" with a light in the scene will indeed show you the position gismo you refer to. Wherever the gismo is for the light, will be where the Flare will be and can be seen from the top view.

    See this video on youtube.

Thank you Christian, but like I've said, I know what you are talking about as I have quite an in depth knowledge of the OF functionalities, BUT with the kind of pressure one has when working in this industry, being able to save time and assets is mandatory and to me having to set up a light, assign a letter to it so that a specifc OF can track that sepcific light, etc.. is a bummer. I believe AK knows what I'm talking about casue he wouldnt be making plugins like FX console which is basically based on the concept of speeding up whatever can be sped up, no matter of it's just 4 seconds.
Plus, if you for example move the gizmo out of the viewport even in the active camera, that gizmo is perfectly visible but as soon as you click elsewhere it disappears for good no matter if you reselct that layer. So it's just a matter of keeping the gizmo visible at all times. Nothing insurmountable.

Hey Andrew, Is there any chance you would make available the plugin/effect you created for the hologram projections in star wars? Specifically the visible light rays that lead from the projection source to the hologram. Or if it won't be available, how would you accomplish this only using AE tools?

No matter the answer to this, Thank you so much for everything you put into your work, and subsequently let us in on the magic.

I was about to ask the same question. However this looks too "small" for a RED set up, I'm thinking more something like an A7S or GH4 / GH5. Anyway, I'm also curious ^^

Great work. This is the kind of quality I expect to see from people using E3D to its fullest. Looks like there's a slight compositing error though on the front landing gear? There's a sharp line cutting off the particles as the gear touches down.
Thanks :) You may be right. I could add a little less alpha chanel on the particles.

It most certainly will be but it may not be the plugin you are hoping for...fingers crossed that VC pulls it out of the bag. Can't wait when they do. If it wasn't for them I wouldn't have a career in motion graphics.
