Announcing Element 3D V2.2

Super busy but I wanted to share some exciting news, Element 3D V2.2 is almost ready! We’ve added some very cool new features for compositing, rendering, workflow and design!  Plus some improved C4D integration.  There are at least 5 impressive new features in this update!

The poster graphic was also created entirely inside of Element 3D V2.2 using the Motion Design 2 pack!

Upgrading:
Element 3D V2.2 will be a free upgrade from V2!
If you are still running V1.6, you can upgrade to V2 now and receive the new update when it is ready!

Needless to say we have been working hard, developing new plug-ins, I’m directing a new short film and working on some great new tutorials! Now I just need to finish them!

Any possibility VCP will release an AE CC 2014 compatible version of Element 3D v2.2?

With all the bugs (Adobe predicts a mid July AE update) and all the disabled features (to be brought back later) in AE CC 2015 it would be nice not to wait on it. I suspect AE CC 2014 will used my most AE artists for several months ...
Hey guys,
it works for me in the end with CC 2015.
the screen was grey at the start, I launched videocopilot, then on top right corner there was a warning for a new build available in my case ( january or so) I Installed that and now it works.
correction: I launched Element3D and not videocopilot
6 years ago
I installed AE CC 2015 this morning (which it automatically uninstalled AE CC 2014 in the process) and found Element 3D V2 is not compatible, and I am currently on an element project for a client, So I had to re-install AE CC 2014 to continue working, just a heads up. keep up the great work Kramers! and come out with a new 3d model pack or something so I can gladly give you more on my money!

Same here - stupid move - screwed some work I'm doing. I assumed VC were on the beta program and have this level of bugs ironed out by 2015 release. A reinstall makes no difference. We need a patch please, very soon - hours. Can't backtrack to CC 2014 either.

Not very encouraging that Andrew's only tweet on the matter is suggesting that people keep the old version of AE installed on their system.
    Steven Jenkins
Julian-According to Adobe, you can save back one version, so if you saved your project in the 2015 version you can still open it with the 2014 version.
You can custom install it into the plugins folder of AE CC2015.... It worked for me but did crash in the beginning... My 2 cents? Use AEcc2014 till the new element is released... If you haven't installed cc2015 yet, then make sure you DESELECT the remove previous versions in the checkbox under advanced options - https://twitter.com/wtftvtv/status/611045314871472128

@Julian: actually you can reinstall AE CC 2014 with the Creative Cloud Panel.
Go to "Apps -> Apps-List -> Pulldown on the right" There you should find an entry called "Show older Versions". My CC Panel is in german, so I can't figure the exact terms but you should be able to find it...

That would be super cool if one of those five features was the ability to run on Intel Iris graphics cards since Apple has bet on Iris for the foreseeable future. VCP = PC MASTER RACE
    Konnor
Who cares about apple? As other devs have found out, never EVER bet on Apple for anything anymore because they don't care about pros. Their OCL is atrocious. Their lack of fresh updates for their AMD cards (which lag behind Nvidia) are laughable. The updates in El Cappie are a copy of Windows usability sprinkled with their continuing effort to merge iOS/OS11 (osx is on life support).

I'd rather the 5 features be something specific to the plugin or AE, and not providing more support for one specific feature of one specific platform on one specific device, because Apple won't put it in all their devices.

I think that the best feature to add, inside "element v2.2", is the possibility to Sculpt and paint an 'obj' (like in zbrush) directly inside "element" in realtime and with matts.
ex: if i'm on a project and in the last minute my boss don't like the ear or the noze of the character, it will take too much time to re-scuplt, paint, import and adjust. But if it will be possible, we can sculpt and paint directly in realtime inside 'element', and it will take some 'clics'
It would be fantastic to see this in the update features, if it wouldn't then i hope that you will accept my idea and release it in the next updates :D
and thank you ANDREW, you are a Genius , i really fall in love with element v2.

Beyond the possibility that AK went on a family vacation, he is also doing a film project for Ryan Connolly over at Film Riot. Besides making the actual film, he is also having to do BTS segments. So I think that Mr. Kramer is quite justified in taking his time to unveil this update. Besides, what have you done with the current update? I know I haven't even scratched the surface of E3D V.2

We all understand that AK is a VERY busy man. But he is not the only person at VCP. What happens if I need support on my product lic. ? Can anyone tell us... have anyone received technical support in the past month, and how long did it take for them to respond ?

@Michael: Matt Kramer does an awesome job at support and I usually get feedback in less than 24 hours. The most recent confirmed incident of support happening was last weekend. Check it out here: http://www.videocopilot.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&t;=124362

So I would assume you don't need to worry about any licensing issues ;)

Yes I got support in a matter of a few hours from none other than

    Operations Guy
I emailed support with some questions and Matt Kramer responded within 6 hours. I emailed them at 5:30 central time, which is 3:30 am Pacific, so, if you account for time change they responded about an hour after normal opening time for most businesses. He did say Element 2.2 is in its final stages of testing.

Strange, the support issue. I mailed the support on may 30 2015. Never got an answer. Then again on june 2 asking if there is a reason why I don't get a reply. Still nothing...not very nice since I am about the purchase the Element 3D Studio Bundle.

Select your model and hold down shift while selecting 'file' from the Element UI. You can export as obj.

Element 3d question... How do you save objet made from extruding ?
I can save preset objet after changing materials or change scale in dimension. i just made spaceship from extruding different mask and cant find way to save as a object.

On a Mac, also try holding command+shift while clicking file menu, you should then see "export obj" as an option in the drop-down menu.
    Lj
Thanks Hans123 didn't know for that hidden option in Element 3d V2. Just need to hold shift than click on files and there it is.. now I can save extruded shapes and export them as OBJ. Only i need to manually rename OBJ name once when is saved so it daunt overwrite the file next time as it would save as default name.
    This is so great.
It make me wonder how many another things did I miss in element 3dv2
    hans123
    @david:
hold shift >>File >>save as obj is for a PC, if you have Mac, see the answer from BD.
It works since Version 1.6 but only for extruded
objects within Element3D and this was the question from Lj.
You cannot save other Models with this function.
    david
    @hans123
Ah yes... I tried with a non-extruded Object. That's why it didn't work. Thought i might convert the motion-design-2 Objects into .obj format since these come only in .e3d-pack format...
Sad... But anyways: thanks for the tip!

I dont really think that Andrew has the time anymore to do many tutorials like he did in the old dayes. Yester day i enjoyed two after effects tutorials on youtube. The are made by a very clever guy. He is doing very good stuff. Why dont Videocopilot hire this guy to make tutorials? Andrew your time is better spend making Element 3D a better plugin. This guy has a fulltime dayjob outside off his tutorials. I dont know if he is a Postman or Carpenter or whatever, but its is encredible he can make such quality in his spare time.

Something reminds me to ask, why not develop Element 3D for Apple Motion?
Having used both apps - Motion first, actually - It's this end-user's opinion that Motion offers up a pale comparison to AE. It lacks the creative power and depth and even falls short on simple things like Motion Blur ( Motion's Behaviors do, however, seem to trump AE's old-school-coding Expressions and it is better optimized for my Mac Pro's GPUs). I think it would be a better idea for the Motion user to get up to speed on AE and let the plug-in developers keep their focus on the superior format.
    Seth
@Paca You're right. But the thing that sucks is Adobe knows it and has us by the balls (Creative Cloud subscription) I wouldn't mind some competition to keep Adobe on their toes, but who can really compete? *sigh* oh well...I'll just keep clinging onto my AE CS6 for as long as possible.
Motion is looking very tired of late... was using it back in 2007, but since then moved onto AE... Having said that, Nuke is looking like a nice step up from AE... It's a learning curve but yields great results. They are actually offering a free non-commercial version to try out atm, which I have been tinkering with. Element for that might be a wow. Hope everything is OK AK... Your people miss you :)

For all of you that need something constructive to do while we wait. How about making the most realistic Cornell Box you can muster with the tools available in V2? Here's my first attempt at such a render. I couldn't find any examples of others doing this in Element 3D but I'm sure some of you could pull off something better.

THANX ANDREW FOR THE GREAT STUFF. I MEAN TO ASK, HOW DO YOU DO YOUR SOUND DESIGN, AND WHICH SOFTWARE DO YOU USE. WOULD YOU MAKE A TUTORIAL IF POSSIBLE FOR SOUND DESIGN?
I for one, am happy with the decision of getting Element.
It's helped immensely with a scene I'd visualized for my upcoming VR (360) project. Here's a snapshot of what will eventually be a minute and a half stereo 3D flyby: https://littlstar.com/photos/37118fb2

Now, if Andrew would include a spherical camera renderer or an export scene to Indigo Renderer...that would take AE production to a whole new level.

Klaus - Take your head out AK's ...
I've been reading your comments for the past month, yes very beautiful and positive. Just one question, do you represent VideoCopilot ? Because if you do, then awesome, at least someone from the VideoCopilot team is paying attention to all their fans. All that what we ask for is some feedback. Doesn't need to be the update or even a hint.. Just "hallo guys, very sorry for not responding on the site right now, we are busy.. hmm please check back in a month, Your best friend - AK"
    hans123
Hello Michel, poeple can write what they want. But sometimes it's better, you ignore postings, like this one from Klaus. Take your time for other things and let us wait for a real answer from Videocopilot.
    klaus brandenburg
@michael: Sorry if I posted something that got you mad and forced you into being disrespectful. Yeah I could have written "Michael. think for a moment. Your claim that this is not a work load issue is quite daring and without any proof to back it up. Also your math is wrong because you have to add the time you were thinking about what you are going to post, assuming you did. Then again you're 'just' a regular guy so it doesn't have the weight as if Mr. Kramer makes an announcement here. So I guess even making a 'Sorry guys banner' takes quite a while, not speaking of the wall of text that might calm you down."

So these were my thoughts when commenting your comment but thinking about it you were better off with my initial reply. And no, I'm not representing Videocopilot but the part of mankind that can read. AK already wrote that he's super busy with a bunch of projects that need to be finished. He announced upcomming tutorials and gave hints about what to expect from the update.

    Wow, Klaus.
If I didnt know that you actually contribute positively and actively to this forum with tuts and tips, Id think you were either paid to police on behalf of VCP, or straight up a troll.
Michael writes a spot-on and very accurate post IMO - and you go into sarcasm and disrespect. Then you get even more sarcastic when he reacts negatively - and still more diplomatic than most would - to your post.

If youre not getting paid by VCP, you should be.
I really dont understand why you keep attacking, provoking and bullying people who point out the obvious:
It takes 30 seconds for a VCP representative to post something in here.

@Lasse: Wow, wrtiging two sentences - a daring claim and a moot comparison - is spot on and accurate now? Really? Having one oppinion and sticking to it is legit, while having another one is trolling? Telling someone to get his head out of someones ... is diplomatic? I think you biased views pretty much speak for themselves here.

Don't mind Klaus, he's obviously extremely passive aggressive in forums. Just view his posts with a grain of salt and a lot of laughter.

With regards to "AK", which is more important than Klaus, I think there was an initial release set but things happened and he hasn't gotten back to the blog to post an update. It's his website so he's allowed that levity, and consumers will ultimately forgive him for it.

I agree Seth. Any other company promotes their updates months in advance. VCP is growing constantly. I bet if they rushed the update and it was full of bugs, there would be nothing but whiners on here. Grow up, we're all excited but, be realistic. Take this time to go over tutorials that you've missed or check the various other tutorial sites in the meantime and learn something new.Check redgiant tv or or the other various web resources and get productive.

Andrew hasn't come this far by neglecting his customers. I'm sure he has good reason, people. Everyone has lives, and sometimes stuff happens. Be patient. How about messing around more with the current version of E3D instead of sitting here pushing the refresh button over and over? If I recall, this was the response back when VCP announced v1... Then there was the 2 day rant from people about the release of v2... We are part of a community that HAS TO ADMIT VCP make the GREATEST plugins for AE currently on the market. Everything has exceeded expectations thus far, and the support is second to NONE!

True followers of this company realise that perfection takes time, and perfection is what VCP strives for...

And you show your gratitude by creating threads (threads that search engines will list, potentially hurting VCP's rep to new visitors) on this site that make it sound like VCP is a terrible money making machine that shows disrespect for its followers and customers alike.. I would upgrade in a second to version Element 3D V.2 / 2.2 but I'm one of the poor suckers who is still using After Effects CS4.

The funny thing is, that Adobe has yet to provide me a convincing reason to upgrade. Yet all the 3rd party plugin suppliers, like your self and Red Giant, constantly give me good reason to be on thier latest version.

The money I would have used to upgrade (pre Adobe's subscription model) has always gone to plugins instead of upgrading Adobe because the plugins allow me to do more with the software.

Any chance you can make V2.2 available on CS4 again? Pretty, pretty please.

If I build a 3d Model in Maya and give it costume attributes with driven keys, will there be some way to transfer these attributes to Element 3D? (similar to the different Jetstrike costume attributes)

If we would get better animation controls within Element, there would be a lot of time saved by not having to render endless render passes in Mental Ray/Vray for many projects.

Thanks
Eric
I don't know if this is possible with AE and E3D, but a feature i'd love to see is the ability to render each frame in pieces/percentages as opposed to one entire frame at a time. Allowing less capable GPUs to render larger resolution comps.
Either way, I'm looking forward to the update!
    Kramer’s Evil Twin
There already is this function. There is a Region of interest tool just at the bottom of the comp window, it allows you to draw a rectangle around the area of the comp you want to work on, and this will be the only part that AE renders in the working space.
    Eric
Kramer's Evil Twin - The region of interest tool doesn't effect the render queue. If you select a region and render the comp, the entire comp is rendered.
    Eric Anderle
I just found that you can use the region of interest as a crop region during output, but I'll have to test if Element with play nice. Ex. 2k comp with more polys than my GPU can calculate, but render it in sections using the ROI tool. I'll try it out
    Eric
So I tested the ROI with element. I rendered the right half, cleared my memory and rendered the whole frame. Both renders took the same amount of time, so it appears that the same calculations are happening with or without the ROI. This workflow may work for large resolutions which is cool, but for E3D scenes ultra detail and tons of polys, I think the render time and GPU capability is the same.
    Kramer’s Evil Twin
Hi Eric, I think I probably misunderstood your original problem. The ROI is really designed to speed up work flow by allowing you to work on a portion of the frame without AE having to render the whole frame every time you change a parameter. I guess from your test This may not be working as Element may be doing it's own calculations before AE draws the results so you wouldn't see much performance improvement in this way.

The problem could be solved with a more traditional approach, Ae is a 2D application at its core so when you're working on clomplex 3D scenes it might be more manageable to break the larger scene down into more managble pieces (for example Foreground, Middleground and Background passes and maybe any animation passes for things moving in the scene). Render these passes in a way your machine can handle and then recomposite them in 2D from image sequences. Remember Element supports many options for output including normals, shadows and AO only passes. this is often the way large 3D scenes are dealt with in compositing.

Film Riot is releasing a series of videos called "Epic Summer," where they will give an in-depth, behind the scenes look at a new short film every month this summer. It's pretty awesome. In April they released like 14 episodes that covered everything from location scouting, set design and makeup to color-grading, animation and sound production... they had each specialist give a brief overview of their philosophy on their craft as well as show how they achieved the results in the featured short film...

April featured Ryan Connolly and his short film, "U.F.Oh Yeah"
May is Seth Worley's "Real Gone"

June will be focused on something done by Andrew Kramer... maybe this is where we will get the first look at Element 3D v2.2... It would give him a chance to show off the new version of Element in conjunction with the rest of his production process...

Hey everyone. I can understand the excitement for some new features in Element, but we just need to be patient. One thing I admire about the VC team is that they are always upping the game. Always going bigger and better. The side effect of bigger and better is it just takes more time.

When you think about all the stuff they are putting together, NAB, Film Riots Epic Summer, E3D V2.2, Bad Robot, new tutorials, new products etc, imagine the time required for all of those things. ALL of those things will be bigger and better than before, because if they're not, we will complain about that.

VC is still a relatively small team creating products that easily stand up to much larger companies. These products allow us (sometimes one person shows) to look like we have a huge team.

We use these products for our livelihood. They have a responsibility to make sure it's reliable.

As for E3D V2.2, Andrew probably just gets excited to share the news because of the new possibilities for us. Maybe they ran into some hick-ups, or maybe they are putting in a new feature. It's coming. Just be patient.

Obviously Andrew is in great demand and if you saw the titles for Star Trek, you can understand why. The last City Destruction tutorial was an real help to me.

So, deep breath.

Since I'm curious what comes with 3D element V2.2. I wish there were more tutorials with Element.2 tutorials in 6 months, in fact, not much. Already since 2 weeks will be announced "coming soon" Where are you Andrew?

It seemed to me as if the audience is not found on the NAB2015's products videocopilot so interested.Andrew is there also not become really warm with the audience. Was my impression. Live demonstrations are always difficult. But he has mastered it quite well. Keep it up.
And now, please quickly finish the upgrade.

Sincerely yours

Reading some of the comments is quite paradox. People can't wait for V2.2 to come out even though they haven't even figured out V2 because there were only 2 tutorials since 6 months!?! But hey, hit F5 all day long instead of exploring the possibilities on your own :D
    KD
It's not a paradox. Exploring for your self is always part of it but that's never been what VCP has been all about. In fact it was always a place to learn before it was a place to just sell products. The users didn't develop that business philosophy, Andrew Kramer did. And no ones attacking him for his lack of engagement, just offering constructive criticism in hopes VCP remains the go to place for FX education.

Exploring for yourself isn't part of it but the name of the game. As for this place, there were always totorials and commercial products. Since quality is increasing of course the intervals do increase too. There were quite some amazing tutorials in the last time but hey...people will complain about not having enough Element tutorials and if there would be lots of Element tutorial another bunch would demand some tuts without any 1st or 3rd party plugins.
    KD
If that's the name of the game or if what you're saying is that's the only way then why even have tutorials at all? I see on your vimeo page you have a couple
of tutorials. Why, if the name of the game is acquiring the software and learning it on your own? The truth is most people use many things to develop their skills.
I put the time in to figure things out for myself but also consider tutorials and other means of learning an invaluable part of the process. Software and technology
is always changing therefore everybody working in this medium is forever a student. Companies supporting the products they sell by offering lessons that are both
entertaining and informative is something I support wholeheartedly. It helps speed up the learning process for people like me where time is always factor.

It speaks volumes that some people here can't distinguish between constructive criticism and whining/complaining. I think Andrew Kramer should hire you guys, you would make great yes-men. Just sit around and tell him everything he's doing is gold and offer no discerning opinion or perspective and just say the people that do are crybabies. I really wish Mr. Kramer would lend his two cents. He's a true professional and understands criticism is integral to creative endeavors and yes that includes business. I have a feeling he welcomes this kind of feedback. It also makes me wonder if you've worked in a professional environment before? When your employer says your first, second or third pass isn't up to snuff do you say he's being a crybaby and it's good enough? I don't. I use it to improve it. Not saying that I'm Mr. Kramer's employer but this is a internet community based business. It thrives on our support. I would never have gotten as far as I have without video copilot or Andrew Kramer's tutelage. Nobody saying he's not the man but I'd rather play a role (however small it is) in doing anything I can to help improve upon an already great business.

    P.S.
In the professional world nobody respects a kiss ass.
    klaus brandenburg
I think it's quite funny that you need to start name-calling just because you can't take constructive criticism, let alone a contrary oppinion. Given that my post wasn't adressed to you but the overall whining here, your disrespectful conjectures are saying more about you than about me.

Your claiming that VCs business model has changed and that they have abandoned what set them apart from other companies and that this site rather became a place to just sell products is an oppinion at the most rather than criticism because it's not based on facts.

So it's all about that you need more tutorials to undestand the new features that were presented in the "New Features" tutorials and one that dealt with physical shaders and reflections? You think that nearly one hour of product reveal and product tour, a tutorial (+ 2 generic AE tuts) and an online/pdf manual isn't enough for 6 months? Well, let's just assume this is criticism but where's the constructive part? Your wholehertedly support for companies that accompany their products with informative and entertaining tutorials is quite an incentive, isn't it? But since there were informative and entertaining tutorials we're back to square one where there just wasn't enough "color by numbers lessons" for you to get it and now you feel bad and an VC plugin should rather make you feel awesome. Is it about this? Then maybe you should head over to Zaxwerks or AtomKraft or even save some serious bucks by leaving AE alone and use HitFilm Pro.

So yeah, go ahead and play a role by whining about not getting enough attention while I send in bug reports and offer suggestions to support, answer a few quiestions in the forum or even create a few tutorials about features that I consider as "not entirely covered yet". I would strongly suggest to watch them as this might give this site at least a five day break from your rude posts.

P.S. Who's more credible? People who sign with their name or people who don't?
    KD
Okay first opinion and criticism are synonymous. So yes you can call it my opinion if you like but that's like me saying you should use the word contradiction instead of paradox even though it pretty much means the same thing. Second, I don't feel bad and don't need VCP to make me feel awesome again. That's just ridiculous.

As for your suggestion I "should head over to Zaxwerks or AtomKraft or even save some serious bucks by leaving AE alone and use HitFilm Pro." No

I know your name but that doesn't give you any credibility just like knowing mine is Kevin still doesn't give me any.

Here's a link to things I created with E3D without paint buy numbers tutorials. Even the model was done by me and composited in AE. I've done many things with E3D. I don't need your tutorials but thanks all the same.

    @Klaus Brandenburg,

I decided not to spend time commenting more on the current situation on VCP, mainly because it makes precious little difference what I think.
However, I think your tone and comment needs to be addressed.

    Please understand this:
Ive watched some of your tuts and read quite a few of your inputs - and most of it is really friggin great. I truly appreciate your insights and the fact that you share them with the rest of us. Period.
At the same time, you seem to forget that not everyone in here is a super-user of AE or VCP products. Some do this for a living, while many do it as a hobby or on a semi-professional level.
Personally, I am mainly in a different line of work, but use AE, VCP and other products for certain client projects.
Im a complete novice in some aspects when it comes to VFX, and doing pretty good stuff when it comes to others. I suspect others have the same level of competence.

Ive noticed how often you give disrespectful or belittling remarks whenever someone cant figure something out, or has the "audacity" to hold VCP to their own standards.
I know youve also done this with me a few times.
Im not sure why you feel the need to put others down, but maybe you feel better about yourself or your own abilities by doing that. Its very unbecoming, and at the end of the day it doesnt help anyone - except perhaps yourself.
Nobody gets motivated or learn anything from hearing you call us "whining" or laughing at others. If you think thats helpful, you need to educate yourself on basic psychology. And I dont mean that in a sarcastic way.

You seem to be an AE expert, and great for you.
I am an expert in another line of work, and if you came to me for advice and I laughed in your face, youd probably think I was an arrogant ass. And youd be right.
When youre really good at something, you can either use those skills and knowledge to help others, or just be quiet. Berating others helps noone.

As for the whole debate about "whining", complaining or giving constructive criticism:
Would you call people "whining" if they complained that Coca Cola stopped tasting like cola?
Would you belittle customers who complained that FedEx no longer delivered overnight?
Would you laugh at clients who got mad if Porsche started slapping their badge on Skodas?
    Probably not.
Then why call people "whining" when they hold VCP to their OWN standards and promises?

The very NAME "Video Co Pilot" tells us about their reason for being:
"Sitting next to you while you captain your project".
Their company profile says: "Our goal is to show you what is possible and how effects can be created so that you can apply these techniques on your own creative adventures."
Please read that missions statement again.

VCP started out as a site built on TUTS!
Its what they mainly do, and its one of the main reasons why people come here!
Its their MAIN promise to their comsumers, and the very core of their brand!

So why it makes people (including you) freak out when some of us try to hold them to THEIR OWN PROMISE and standards is beyond me.
Its like saying to a disgruntled FedEx customer: "You idiot! Why dont you transport the package yourself, or use another company?! Haha!"
Ermwell, I picked FedEx in the first place because they promised me that theyd deliver overnight??

Same goes for VCP as I see it.
We complain because one of the main reasons we picked VCP in the first place, was their amazing tuts and the promise of a steady stream of tuts.
Does that exclude people from experimenting or finding other resources? Of course not. But it DOES make it quite OK to complain when VCP doesnt deliver on their own promises.

As Ive said many, many times: AK is probably busy as hell with other things, and they may be working like crazy to put out great tools for their clients.
All that aside, their PR and ability to keep their clients in the loop stinks. It just does.
The fact that noone can take 30 seconds to write a simple post to let their fans and clients know what to expect and when, is beyond me.
And no matter how much I like AK and respect the work the guys from VCP do, their communication skills are simply not good enough.
Just check this thread, and it should be evident that people are screaming for ANY kind of news or response.
VCP is lucky to have fans and clients who even bother writing and asking for news.
Hell, the fact that we are even debating this very topic ferociously should tell you something.
Other companies acting like this would have lost a lot of their clients by now.

    @ L Bauer,

Here we are again my friend huh? Same discussion, different month. Makes me wonder how long VC will allow this kind of thing to go on before they either buck their ideas up with communication, or get used to the idea the very people that helped them get successful, as in their supporters and more importantly their paying customers are dropping off like flies.

I recall several months ago (after the release of V2) THE very same discussion going on, this is why ive just sat back and read whats going on this time. It appears more and more customers are beginning to feel the same way as you and I did back then.

I Especially liked KDs statement In the professional world nobody respects a kiss ass. which if I recall you and I were saying all those months ago. Its a shame, VC successfully put themselves in this arena as the professional stock footage and AE plug in providers, but they are successfully taking themselves out of it at a faster rate than it took them to build it. Once you provide and charge for a product, you have a professional obligation to answer customers questions and acknowledge concern. You just moved up a notch from novice to professional which for the longest time, they wore the professional crown well.

I for one, Im losing interest. Ill happily see whats going on with the V2 update and obviously use it as well, Ive paid for it. After that It will be several months before I check back here as, well whats the point? All you hear is the sound of crickets.

Im thrilled, ecstatic even at the success AK is having outside of this site and understand where is loyalty lies, providing for his family in the big leagues Like it should. Nobody but NOBODY deserves it more than him. BUT..either pass the baton on to another team member to keep the site alive, or gracefully step down while you are at the top and close the gates. Dont keep your followers guessing or for some just hanging on by a thread. Thats where the respect you have built will be choked by the weeds growing under your feet, and right now VC arent doing a thing to keep their yard tidy.

    Hello Lasse!

First of all thanks for the compliments. I really appreciate it. As for being a disrespectful guy who likes to put others down I'm affraid I can't argue against your perception. You're probably right about my lacking skills in psychology but then again I'm quite literate in philosophy and can't decide between Dionysius and Hume. Apart from that I consider myself a quite reasonable and helpful guy with a low bullshit-threshold regarding "not using the search function first", "not giving a precise description of a problem" and most of all "not sticking to the facts".

That being said, I think most of your points are moot because you are not sticking to the facts but your personal interpretation of things you read on VCPs website.

    1. VCP started with tuts and comercial products like "Real Clouds", "Video Streams" and "The Bullet", which was a commercial tutorial with project files and the likes. Apart from the tutorials there were always some free goodies like VCPs presets, SureTarget2 and of course the Vibrance plugin BUT also commercial stuff like Twitch, Action Essentials 1 & 2 and so on and so forth. Maybe people weren't aware of this because it was easy to get cracked or ripped versions of this stuff back then.

    2. VCPs standards and promises remain intact. Do they show you what's possible? Yes! Of course the "apply these techniques on your own creative adventure" part is not in their hands, I guess and doing a quick youtube or videohive search for VC tutorial clones gives audacity a new name. But still there's a steady stream of tutorials about topics that you maybe thought they were out of your comfort zone. Was there any bad tutorial? Were you mad when AK released a good Polygon tutorial when you expected some more info on Element V2? Understandable but then again there's another vocal crowd that "whines" when there's a tutorial that requires additional plugins. So expecting a higher frequency (we're not talking about quality, aren't we?) is quite an unrealistic expectation and has nothing to to with fulfilling promises or standards.

    3. Your dissapointment with the company that "you picked" is standing on shaky grounds. You probably picked VCP because of great plugins that were free ( as opposed to great or not so great tutorials you have to pay for on aetutsplus) and you pick VCP products because they are more or less unique, come at a reasonable price and have good customer support. The latter means that technical problems are going to be fixed but do not neccessarily mean that you get a basic understanding of AE implanted.

    4. As a frequent VCP visitor you should know that "soon" is quite a soft word for an estimated time of delivery. While you may want to hear "tomorrow", from a developers point of view this might mean "3 months...if everything works as planned". So yeah, you could blame it on bad PR and I might blame it on lack of understanding.

    5. Yeah VCP has to feel blessed with so many loyal fans. With spoiled brats like this, who needs enemies anyway? I'm just grateful that companies that really ignored their customers needs have by now ceased to exist like Adobe and Apple. Wait, they're making even more money now? What a shame...

    Hey Klaus,

    Thanks for your response.
Again; Im trying to drop my sarcastic tone - one that I believe I have used with you as well. And sorry for that. Its aggressive and does exactly what I am trying to avoid: Belittling others or coming across as arrogant. So: I apologize if my remarks have been less than simply straight-forward.

As for the rest; I agree with you on most points.
I think where we disagree the most, is on what to expect from VCP (or any company).
Im not mainly here for the free plug-ins. I actually purchased quite a few of their products, and am happy with the quality.
But I do feel left in the dark sometimes, and

And for the record; I have myself provided both help and small tuts for others on this forum, so its not like I dont experiment or try thing out for myself. I do.
What basically doesnt sit well with me, it purchasing a product that proclaims that you can do X, Y and Z with them - and getting told that there will be tuts showing you how to do these great things....and then nothing happens.
Had they simply said: "Heres a new, cool product. Heres some examples of what you can do - now figure out the rest yourself", then at least I would have known that from the get-go.

And no matter how you look at this, VCP does not live up to their own promises. And the COMPLETE lack of communication is not something anyone can excuse or talk their way out of. No matter how big a fan one might be. (And believe me, I AM a VCP fan, or I wouldnt spend time writing this).

As for Apple and other companies that grow despite their lack of client service: It only goes to show that something is wrong in that market. And I dont think it should be a new standard for other companies to follow.
Besides; Apple (and other giants) have "need-to-have" products, which is why they can get away with ignoring their customers.
    VCP isnt quite there yet.

Just to clarify. My initial post an pretty much of my arguments aren't geared specifically to anyone in person and I don't consider "our" discussion as personal but rather a proxy discussion between two "contrary" points of view. I assume you're a decent and reasonable guy and hope you didn't feel personally offended because that wasn't my intention.

Of course everybody got the right to be dissappointed or dissatified with a certain business or service. Some people have good enough reasons and some simply join in with "ignorance" or "selfishness". Since VCP appeals to a very broad audience I assume the latter might dominate but then again I heard some of the most ignorant stuff from professionals themselves.

When you talk about expectations I partly agree. You had a lot of examples with services that didn't deliver and yes, I would be rightfully mad too if a service I paid for, didn't work as expeted. But, as I see it, this can be only applied to the business side of VCP, where they truely deliver. Their technical support is one of the fastes and best I ever dealt with. Bugs get wiped out fairly quick and they even try to support some exotic stuff like Hackingtoshs or Macs with Nvidia Cards. Regarding Apples drivers issues I wouldn't even bother with a Mac version at all ;) Their 14 money back thing is also quite unique to me. If I would buy software without reading the technical requirements I would have a hard time to get a refund anywhere else. So in this regard I consider VCP highly professional and living up (and beyond) their standards.

The other side is the creative part like tutorials and plugins. In my very humble oppinion you have to look at this field from another angle. Think about your favourite band. Maybe you would like them to never change and every album must not sound not the same but then again not too different either. But artists evolve and many bands have to make decisions if they rather be popular or creative and inspired by new influences and styles. I wish Peter Gabriel did a follow up to "Up" but instead he did "New Blood" and "And I'll scratch yours". Still he's one of my favourite artists. Thinking about a live show where he doesn't play "Solsbury Hill" is how I feel reading the comments here ;)

The way I see it, tutorials got more sophisticated which also requires longer preparation times. If he would only adress professionals his tuts might only be a few minutes long but all this teaching stuff takes time. The art of teaching, how to build up knowledge and understanding, the neccessary excursion here and there is a true art. Doing my 5 tutorials took like forever and I'm still not quite happy with them for many reasons. So I really appreciate AKs effort and the easiness he presents this which is hard and time consuming work.

Also, let's not forget a certain the psychological factor. When you do a great tutorial, with the vision in mind to enable people to do awesome and original stuff, and you only see blatant copies of your work (even sold as templates!) this is quite a tough thing to swallow. When you get replies that this was not the tutorial a bunch of guys was waiting for, this isn't quite motivational either. This is just speculation but I assume AK is professional enough to cancel out the noise (it's either "you are god" and "we're still waiting") and instead of saying something unpolite rather waits untill there's good things to talk about. So assuming the update might be in the process of beta testing and nobody can say what other issues might come up there, there's nothing meaningful to say about an ETA. And mentioning features before a release might be just another controversy. I can already predict this: "you are god", "OMG I waited for just this feature", "OMG why this feature and not that feature", "When will we see Element V2.2 tutorials", "When will we see generic AE tutorials". Speaking of uproar, I wonder how AKs participation in Filmriots EPPIC FILM SUMMER will be received. A you might know he's doing a short movie along with supposedly lots of Behind the scenes stuff. I can assume that this is a lot of work and will be quite inspiring for a lot of people (well, I expect nothing less) but I'm willing to bet a weeks loan that there will be a good amount of people saying he should have done some VCP tutorials instead.

As for announced Element tutorials that never happened. I took a close look at the product reveal and the product tour. Apart from giving an excellent and thorough overview (ye that depends on ones personal skill level) I just found one reference to an upcomming tutorial about creating cool metal looks. Which got delivered. A few comments above there is a guy asking about when AK finishes his tutorials from the product tour. Somehow he must have confused a lot of examples with the promise to do all this in detail later on with lots of tutorials. So he might be dissapointed because he was expecting this but honestly has no reason to. Once for having heard what he wanted to hear rather than what was being said. But mostly because he wasted precious time waiting for a tutorial about something he could have figured out and even perfected by now. The HUD thing wasn't that hard even for beginners and all the neccessary info was there all the time.I guess this is the point that makes me both sad and mad and is the reason I'm writing all this.

Finally, regarding the "left in the dark" thing I can only offer (again) to visit the forum for there are lots of helpful and talented people around or send me a PM and I gladly share what I learned so far. I will try to be more forgiving and less belittlling in my tone since all my argumentation in defense of VCP has made me aware of my own shortcommings and for being biased some of the times :)

    @Klaus,

I cant disagree very much with you on that - and the few things I do disagree on, are insignificant compared to this:

I still think it all boils down to ONE thing:
    Communication.
Branding is about controlling each and every contact point you have with the world around you - and one of the most important elements is controlling the level of expectation. Both the expectations people slowly build because of your history (the quality of products, services etc), AND the expectations that you as a company/brand create.
I bet that 99% of these posts would have been either different or never written, had VCP simply spent a minimal amount of time making it clear what people can expect from them, and when.
    Its a simple as that.

You promise X, Y or Z, you either deliver as promised, or AT LEAST you tell your clients that its postponed or not happening.
It takes 30 secs to give people an update, so there is no excuse for not doing it.

This dates back to the now infamous "Helicopter Pack" that some still ask about - to more current tuts and product launches.

Again, I dont see ANYTHING wrong with VCP being delayed, working hard on other things, or even promising more than they can keep because they got caught up in the moment and are super-excited about something they created but ended up not working out or whatever.

But not communicating and/or promising something without delivering is both silly, unprofessional and at the end of the day not good for business.

Had VCP simply communicated "well make one tut every 3 months, and the 2.2 version will come out Christmas 2015" youd have the opposite situation:
People would be ecstatic if they delivered more and sooner than promised.

Its so simple that I dont understand why VCP dont spend 5 minutes aligning peoples expectations.
    klaus brandenburg
    @Lasse:

I don't know what has been said about a helicopter pack (I rather "make do" than wait) but I can't see how one example can make it to be infamous. Even if you add a once mentioned Car Pack you can't really generalize in such a fashion.

Yeah, one could argue about VCs definition of "soon" as opposed to customers expectations thereof. Then again VC did a pretty good job of building a history of "it's goint to be worth the waiting time" so people should by now have adjusted to this.

As for the 2.2 update. Nothing has been promised or dated so nothing's going to be postponed or even canceled. Hence there is no need for communication in that regard.

It doesn't really matter how you (or I) would run such a business and how communication should look like your (or my) therory. You can follow this through in your onw business and see if you just found the perfect formula for success. You can offer advice to VC but need to accept that it's always Andrews call because it is him that will be always held responsible for anything he says. Hell, sometimes even for things he doesn't say.

I feel too there is a lot more that can be demonstrated in tutorials for Element. If you look around at the work that people have produced on the various video hosting sites, even in Element v1, there is not much that differs from what Andrew teaches in his tutorials. I think this demonstrates that I'm not the only one that needs a bit more of a helping hand to take these tools to the next level. Like there's an extra step to going it alone and making use of the techniques you've learnt than normal After Effects takes. For example, I find the poster image here hugely inspiring but there's no way I could achieve that without some significant tips of how to use the assets. The examples Andrew creates are always inspirational but they don't seem to inspire anyone to use them as a platform for creating anything more advanced like his other tutorials. I hate to say this, but with Andrew being so busy, maybe it's time for him to delegate to an apprentice Andrew to dish out secondary tutorials. Otherwise I think a lot of potential that Element offers is going to evaporate. Heck, I'd even pay $100 for a set of advanced tutorials.

So far there have been uploaded 2 dedicated E3D V2 tutorials and one "experiment" in the last 6 months. Hard to imagine that we will suddenly be flooded with tuts now.
As someone stated earlier:VCP has possibly changed focus and/or structure - and Im sure a busy schedule has made it hard for AK to prioritize tuts.
I'm trying to put this as constructively as possible... as exciting as it is anticipating a new product, tutorial, or update, I'm starting to think my preference might be to know about these things to come later, rather than sooner, in the timeline relative to their actual release. I wonder if I speak for anyone else here?

Steven, I think its primarily an attempt to keep some interest and freshness on the site. They seem to be very busy with this and other projects.
As I have stated many times, it sometimes has a counterproductive effect because these announcements and promises either take forever to fulfill, or never happen.
I think its done with the best of intentions and their work shows that they still very much love what they do. Its just hard to get worked up about VCP news anymore, since we have learned that "coming soon" needs to be taken with a truck-load of salt... :)

If you did that, you'd need to uninstall nearly every program out there. Updates bring new features and fix problems with old ones. It's a good thing! Element3D v1 was great, and we all waited to get it. Development takes time, and with VC, it's ALWAYS a time saver in the end.

The issue of late (to me) is that VCP business model has changed. This used to be the place I would come to learn professional tricks. That's why I always bought the products because Andrew would show inspiring and informative ways to use them. Since the release (6 months ago) of E3D version 2 there are only two tutorials. Neither of them that comprehensive. I don't mind having to wait for updates but releasing these tools and saying go figure it out is abandoning what set VCP apart from all the others sites.

Here's a great feature idea for you Andrew. Make the mirroring plane under the reflections tab adjustable so we can tweak it inside AE or even create a 3D null for it under utilities like the groups. If we could make that mirroring plane follow the camera it would look very close to raytracing for way more situations.

Cpu fan i chose Thermaltake CL-w007-PL12BL-A Water 3.0
This one is so easy to install and it bring CPU temperature instantly under high load and so eazy manage to keep constant temperature at 26 to 30 C Dead silent

Case i chose Corsair CC540R Carbide series air 540 ATC cube case
it is beautiful design it keeps seperate motherboard and hard disks with power supplay sometjing like 2 corpartmens and cables are excelent to manage it is so nice and clean like surgical room

Hard disk i bought 2x Segate 2.5 Laptop SSHD ST 1000LM01 Sata 6GB/s 1TB as arhive disks

4 x Kingston SHFS37A/240G Hyper x fury 240 GB Sata3 SSD as my temp disk 1 for AE and 1 for Premier

another 2 is one for "drop box " where i copy my project files from "arhive HD" and another one for client files

It support AE but you need to manualy configure files in AE to axcept video card. (there is already supported Titan 6gb) so iti is eazy just to add Titan x 12 gb in text file

all that is connected to LG 4K TV running at 2560 x 1440 resolution as 4x in AE text is so small cant properly see.

Blender at 4K is amazing as you can set manualy size of text in first option in general setting under Dpi increase from 75 to 120.

So far dont have problem except i need to get use to silence.

4K is eazy and blender render in cycle is fast ( Im heavy Blender user )

Next AE would support Titan X 12 Gb until then just mjod file to accept card and you would have options to chose betwen GPU or CPU

Hope that this info would help you.

    Hi Lj

Thank you for your answer. Is Elements 3D working with the Titan X? I thought it worked like the build in 3D raytracer. But after doing some research I figured out, that it is not. So the Titan X is ideal for Elements 3D, right? Also for the new update (version?)

I have changed my Workstation GPU from a Quadro K4000 to a Geforce Titan X mainly for Element 3D and it works like a charm. Working with Element 3D has never been faster and more fun.

Yes it is working amazing. I'm able to open complex model high resolution mesh and I always preview with full resolution materials. I'm using custom 8K maps ( normal, height, specular ambient occlusion ) it is amazing to see real time changes on materials when you change lights property in AE. I spend most of the time just playing with materials is so much fun. I Don't use Blender for rendering be cause of Element 3d have real time preview on subscatering for organic like example realistic skin or morning sun rays illuminating plant leaf and every change you make you can see instant on screen in full resolution of your material.

I believe this was shown at NAB, but will there be a "Use Background" material available? A way to matte parts of an object inside of element instead of using a track matte.

Excited either way! Keep up the good work.

I have a feature request just for future reference. I don't even know if it's possible but can you make it so we can assign up to five adjustment layers to each material. I often want to make color corrections or add effects to specific things and I either have to double the instances of E3D or pre-compose. If there was a way to do this it be really helpful.

i would love if is posibble to leave original material name from 3d models when changing materials. when i drag presets material it would replace name i know i can rename to original mames but than next time i change it would owerwrite name again.

or maybe a pluggin when you work with masks to warn you to click on and ativate "before" you do rotoscoping for 2500 frames and than when you finis and press play to find that you didnt click to record position shape and rotation....

Andrew and VC support team
Im missing Primitives in Element 3Dv2 is it posibble to put downoload link for all primitives from element 3d 1.6 next to downoload for Element 3Dv2.2 something like extra OBJ pack from old element as many project are missing simple things like cube ,planes and etc.
    lj
    Found simple sollution
instal element3D V 1.6 under custom folder etc Element old
copy and paste old Icons My_Models Primitives and Starter_Pack if needs into Element3D V2 Models folder.

I'm sure you are a prof, but afaik know the program, i have this big create button for primitives in the main menu.
    Michael
You can create primitives by yourself. Look at the top panel near "Environment" and "Extrude" you'll find button "Create"
    LJ
@ vc_noob This button is to create primitives inside Element 3D v2.
In old Elements V1.6 there was a folder fith Primitives as OBJ files. Al my old projests are using that OBJ.
In Element 3d you can create 3d objects from vectors and from " Create primitives button" but cant export them as OBJ files (realy hope that VC team would meke this possible in near future )
If you dont have that OBJ it would report missing file.

i hope that it would have some option in UV mapping to lock UV Repeat so it can scale in same time rather than adjusting one by one.

also it would be fantastic if is posibble to leave original material name from model. Example i have 20 windows diferent materials named win 1 , 2 , 3 , etc when i drag presets material it would replace name amd it is confusing to go through 50 material with almost indetical names. i know i can rename but than next time i change it would owerwrite name again. so far im diselecting materials to find the one i need.

the best option i would love to see is if is possible to save and export OBJ models created from combination of presets models from Motion design 2 for further modeling in 3d programs.

any good and easy solution program for UV Unwraping ?

Is there a feature request area? I love Element. But I would love it to do more stuff with type. Like see LIVE AE type in a precomp (so you can do more layout type paragraph stuff). Or some how just apply a "Tag" plugin to type layers and then all those "Tags" get seen in the main Element plugin Layer and controlled.
Great news! Amazed an excited, as always.

I hope one of those features means more import options for element, for example FBX importing and point level animation support. In my experience obj sequences are really less than ideal, because they imply huge disk space usage, really slower renders (as all the geometry of the frame must be loaded each time, render-killer specially on network drives), and the obj workflow is imperfect in itself for most 3D suites. Something like Collada or FBX would be a much better option. Compound that with being able to read PLA data and the possibilities expand enormously.

Hey Andrew, can you please check that software called Hit film (http://hitfilm.com ) .. It also imports 3d models etc but also supports *.3ds like formats.. Can't E3D do that? Also please, PLEASE VC TEAM; improve a particle simulator like fume fx for AE that intracts with 3d objects.. :) Thanks a lot..

my friends and I saw you at SW Celebration and said hey to you, but you didn't seem to want to talk. Just wanted to shake your hand and say hello personally, we've crossed paths on here multiple times but never in person. One of our friends is in the hospital from a serious car accident so I was going sroudn getting pictures of them holding his saber to cheer him up (like Doug Chiang and Pablo Hidalgo), really wanted to get you... Maybe we'll meet again? Hope you enjoyed Celebration@
