I just watched this keynote and was mighty impressed with your words and passion for the industry. I've been oon the site before but only in the last week have found out how amazing AE can be for a project I am currently entering for a competiton in Japan (Pity I missed you when you were here! Make sure to say if you are visiting Osaka anytime soon!).

I just want to thank you for being such an inspiration and giving me some fantastic hints on motion design, and also how to give awesome tutorials (I am trying to get into that myself for Game Development).

Keep up the great work!

Great job, Andrew ... thanks so much for sharing this with us. Just wish I could have been there. When are you coming to the East Coast?

I remember watching Fringe when it first started, seeing your name and jumping off the couch and yelling at my wife: "Hey, I 'know' that guy!!" "You do?" Then semi-sheepishly ... "Well, he teaches me AE stuff all the time." Good times.

In any case, you clearly deserve your success and keep doing what you love ! Thank you for your hard work and for everything you share with us around the world.

Andrew,

I am so grateful to your parents for being supportive of what you wanted to do. Because if they didn't push you to do what you wanted then there may have never been a Video Copilot. Two years ago I knew nothing about After Effects, I was making Flash banners and was miserable. A friend introduced me to your site and I learned enough to start making animations For a reel to submit to start a whole new career. today I work as a motion designer for a gaming company, still using what I learned from you as well as others. A big reason you are so adored is that we all relate to you as you can relate to us. Your enthusiasm for what you do is infectious. When I watch your tutorials I know I will learn something. Thank you for all you do.

Congrats on all your success. I found it very vindicating that you mention in your speech many things I have mentioned on your forum. The difference was that on your forum I was ridiculed by your regular forum members for recommending they learn and do the same things you just talked about and did in your life. 1. Volunteer your time to a church or other free work for portfolio items. You did work for JJ for free because you knew it would help your career. Your long time forum members, and your mods, laughed at this notion. 2. Learn photography for composition, rule of thirds, aperture control, zoom experience, etc. 3. Everything doesn't have to be top quality work, its a job. You showed an old demo reel of work that was, well, quick and fast, let's put it that way. Your forum members scoff at this kind of work. So, thank you Andrew for telling it like it is. For showing these pretend to be high and mighty folks that you do what you have to do and you do what you can. I am very happy to learn that you work at Bad Robot now and that Video Copilot is a side company. I wish you all the success in the world. And thank you again for keeping the price of your products at an extreme value. Your generosity for the world is worthy of praise.

Thank you andrew kramer for the speech, thank you soo much. It really moved me, you know i at first i dont know anything about after effects, im just a video editor, and my creative part of thinking really sucks.

Even in my high school time, my artwork in my art class, really like a 2 year old.
But one thing i like watching sci fi movies, or any movies that involved visual effects, i always wonder how can i do that, movies like 300, avatar, hey i even watch the oldies like robot jox, robocop and so on.

But now, when i open your videocopilot websites, i learned soo much. Eventhough i cant do most of it, but its a opportunity for me to learn all this new stuff.
But i still cant do 3d. :(, im still exploring after effects until now. And watch some of them badass showreel. Thank you andrew for teaching me about after effects. Virtually. Thank you so much. Maybe someday i will get the chance to shake your hand. And maybe work for you.

Check out my youtube channel ya, its not much. But it would be an honor for me to have you visit my youtube channel.

WOW Its great watching the video and I learned many things u know when people get popular people like us atleast like me think that my gosh this guy got everything so simply and now I know gosh it is difficult and I really work hard on making good projects u know like when I see people creation like some people used to make some intro and show off and then I see it and try to make that and that is what I have been doing trying to make things from tutorials mixing things and making things from NET and that is what I am not proud of I don't know why I never get ideas I get relaxed and try to think about it but nothing comes but when I sit at the computer I get some ideas SO I THINK CREATIVITY IS IN UR MIND BUT U CAN'T JUST THINK ABOUT U HAVE TO DO IT

The way you interpreted things, your humour which was directly reflected through your speech made me feel even more inclined to keep up and doing what I'm mostly passionate about, because well, just like you said that's what defines us :) You covered some very important points which every one of us has faced or is facing during the path to becoming a better designer, cinematographer and such and gave some great insight into each issue. Hi Andrew,

Thanks for sharing all that. I can relate to simple poignant moments from my childhood that I think truly do motivate us for life.

In my case when I was 12 I showed my Dad a friend's computer programming book that I started learning as my introduction without even owning a computer yet! I remember keenly asking my Dad "Why are there quotes (" ") on separate lines after the command PRINT?". He said "It means 'ditto'". I said "but..". He yelled "I told you it means 'ditto'!".

When I finally got my Commodore 64 I programmed in BASIC my first and last ever game I wrote 'Light Cycles' consisting of two controllable square cursors drawing lines across the screen until a collision ocurred.

Of course the Commodore Amiga was a revolutionary breakthrough which ironically was pivotal to the history of Cinema 4D which I now use! I still do miss the C64 games. Some of the best just have not been replicated.

The right to say I've learned much from your tutorial:D
But something for my opinion I don't like to you,
Why you are concentrated in war stuff?
Do you think that you advertise war instead of peace and beautiful things?
For my opinion is more difficult to created good things than bad things in this industry.destruction building, jet strike, cracks, fire, explosion, earth in fire etc... is the first thing that comes to mind of people dealing with this profession.
Sory for bad english.

To be honest I was hoping for a more focused keynote presentation. Totally dig the worth ethic topic and approach, just thought it could have been written a bit sharper without trying to hard to get a laugh every few seconds.

All love, Keep up the amazing work.

Hey Andrew,

I'm not sure if you truly understand just how much you mean to our community. Maybe you do and maybe you don't but I'd just like to extend my sincere gratitude for everything you do! I can't remember a day in the past few years when I didn't visit your site to see what was the next thing you were going to do. And maybe the GREATEST testament to you and your company is that it never gets old! Sure I wait, just like everyone else, for the next "amazing" tutorial but I never get frustrated when there's a lapse in new tutorials or blog posts because no matter how many times I watch something from you, there is always something that hits home. ALWAYS! Whether it's your sense of humor, or the way you deliver information, or a tip that I'm trying to master, you are never boring and always inspirational. You are absolutely the Classic Rock of After Effects. Timeless!
Sorry for the long post here but somehow I needed to let you know how much I (and many others) appreciate what you have done. You have most certainly helped improve my skillset and my career.

Thank you Andrew!

you are the best ANDREW KRAMER. big love to you from Asia!!!
great talk. starts off slow and then as you get into it and more and more impassioned, you're personality comes through and with such great insights to share. Great choice in chapter title images. It was only missing a Sam cameo in person!
thanks for being a great icon and mentor to the average wannabe VFX artist with low confidence, who didn't get a chance to go to VFX schools and instead learned on our own through your tutorials and began to believe. HERO!

Hello. Very great show!! I did not understand all correctly because i'm french. I follow you and wathc al day your site for news, and new tutorial.
I followed The Blue Planet tuto, and watched the Motion Pulse tuto, how to do it.
May i can make a suggestion?
I would creat or be partof a French Video Copilot Community, the idea come to me when i remember somes parts of my "Blue Planet" try, i remember at some moments of the tutorial, i did not understand what i must do like you do it, and, i have a french version of After Effects, then sometimes, somes effects are not into the same folder than in the english version, that's why, i would creat this french community, and do after you french version of your tutorial if i can. (havn't buy VC products because i'm in search for a job and havn't enough money for now...).
I can learn fast, and you and VC really inspire me to learn more and more about 3D, motion design, i really love follow your tutorial, even i can't do it because i havn't products, there always a little trick to learn!!
Please, think about it, it can be amazing!
Good continuation Andrew, thanks for reading, and "we will see in next time!" ;)

Love this Andrew! This was a good "pick me up" for me. I laughed at the 'Im getting tired of doing these gas station screens" because most of my income comes from a deployment of digital signs I do motion graphics for in a local gas station chain, and I am getting to that point "Im getting tired of these".

I hope one day I can meet you and be considered one of your peers in the industry.

A genuinely intersting keynote. The fact that you can maintain interest over three quarters of an hour with nothing more than a few slides and some anecdotes is, in my opinion, truly comendable. My only criticism is that I was waiting for the punchline when you started to talk about your folks.

When it didn't come, you got me. Bastard ;)

Great keynote speech Andrew. Very well thought out and from the heart, huzzah! Been an avid fan following VCP since 2009 and it's just unreal on how uniquely talented you and the crew you surround yourself have become. Not only are you an inspiration to the VFX community, but definitely to this guy typing away. Don't become discouraged at any project you immerse yourself in because you're incredible!

Check out my site if you wish on your free time. My work is no where near where the professionals are but taking advantage of each and every day that I've been given to become better and more skilled. I'm more than proud of the work I've done and look forward in learning more! Thanks again for all of your work and can't wait for Element 3D V2!

This is great Andrew - Very inspiring. One question I have is during your diversify section. Im not sure if your saying its good to be a jack of all trades but if you are what do you suggest to become i guess more unique?

Im a "interactive designer" who does graphic design, motion graphics, videographer, video editor, marketing etc. Should I be doing something different?

I think personally you want to have your specialist software or role - so for me its post-production and After Effects, but I regularly use most of the rest of the Adobe suite and c4d. I sell myself on my After Effects work but I need to be able to use a number of others programs in order to do my job to the very best of my ability, both for speed and results. I'm happy to spend time learning at least the very basics of other programs or plug-ins so I have an idea of what they do. In the case Andrew mentioned, I'm seeing that more and more - FCP, Premiere & Avid editors who a) have to now know all of the editing programs [since there isn't really an industry standard after the FCPX debacle] as well as dip into After Effects to get simple graphics done, be it for titles, simple tracking and compositing, shot replacement, better keying, etc. I know many cameramen who edit, some who do that *and* graphics and all to a high standard. So I'm not saying pigeonhole yourself, but find what you are passionate about and build around that - what will make people hire you to do that regularly?

You don't *have* to know other programs or media but of course its going to help you do your favoured type of work, be it VFX, animation, editing etc better than the person next to you if you have that extra knowledge.

Find the balance of what works best for you. The first thing I'd say is that you kind of ask an impossible question - 'Should I be doing something different?' - Only you can answer that, man. What is your passion, what are you happy to do for you daily work? What will best get you to where you want to be?

And of course, never stop. There's always a new plugin, program update, or technique to learn. I'm learning C4D at the moment (been using a lot in conjunction with Element!) and loving it, I've also been improving my knowledge of Mocha, and Premiere. I want to get back into sketching and learn my new camera. More often than not I'll force myself to do it in spare time, or make sure I don't just use the same tricks and techniques on every job. If the job you're doing is dull, find a way to make it interesting for you - try that new plug-in, or piece of software. You won't regret it. And finally, never worry about knowing everything. There will always be someone who knows more than you regarding some program or other, the software and hardware is so vast and complicated, which is why collaboration is the fastest, cheapest and most efficient way to learn. See what others are doing and learn from them.

    Hope that helps mate.

Awesome job, Andrew! You really hit on some points I've been thinking about lately. There are a lot of tutorials on this site alone and it's easy to go through one and never look back. But, like you said, that's all I've done is completed a tutorial. I haven't done anything to make the idea mine. Many times, I've watched one of your tutorials and been shocked by some of the effects you've accomplished just from experimenting with some of the built-in plugins.

I find myself doing that more and more. I'll take an idea or technique from one of your videos and see what else I can make it do, or in what other way I can use it. Or, I'll find myself opening After Effects and just experimenting to see what I can come up with. I have a degree in New Media Communications with a focus in video, but all of my video compositing and motion graphics knowledge came from watching your videos. I'm the only one in my area who knows how to do this sort of thing and I didn't learn it from professors at my college, I learned it from many hours of sitting in the lab watching you. I came to be at my present job for the city because of a couple of videos I did by just grabbing a friend, shooting some footage and then using Element 3D and Particular for effect.

So, thank you. You do awesome work and I hope you realize that your passion is inspiring.
