Announcing Element 3D V2!

It has been a little over 2 years since the release of Element 3D V1 and I still remember it quite vividly. I recall staying up all night before the launch, trying to get everything done.

I was nervous and excited.  My son Josh had just been born a week earlier and I was working from home at the time. The pressure was on!

Finally everything was in place and we hit the GO button. The page went live! I exhaled with a strange form of guarded relief. There was no turning back.

The next thing I remember in my semi-conscious state was the absolutely incredible response from the community.  The heartfelt comments and appreciation.  Even to this day, when somebody gets a chance to use Element 3D in their project, I’m truly excited and thankful.

At Video Copilot we know the bar is raised high and we accepted the challenge.

Today, I’m pleased to announce the next major release of Element 3D V2!  This November, we’re thrilled to bring our latest plug-in to the world!

Our team has worked exceptionally hard to try and bring you incredible new features that will save you time and create impressive results without a SHADOW of a doubt.

Join Us October 6th for the first sneak peak and some actual product details!!
(Right after I get back from After Effects World!)

UPGRADING: We will have special upgrade pricing for previous owners as well. This is a BIG Release!

am I allowed to use Element3d in two locations? I work from home but also have an office... So not at the same time ofcourse.
Yes. As far as i know you have several licenses. Dont now if you could use E3D on different devices at the same time, but i know that you can license it on different machines. I have it on my Lap and Workstation.

Any idea how to get the reflections to appear on live action or matte on live action vs the e3d planes?
You have to use a modle that has the same properties as the live action thing. for example: if you have a mustang, you use a mustang - position it like the live one and then use "maate reflections. Only the reflections will be applied to the object.

Can't wait. I hope you guys tackle animating custom shape paths. The workarounds needed at present are clumsy. Plus I hope you have dedicated some time on improving the bevel system as it is infuriating when expanding paths and they cross over causing holes and gaps and spikes. Surely there must be a better way than just the reduce spike feature.

Can't wait to see the new upgrade. Wonder if will have animated people. Community people like fireman, police man, police car, fire trucks, emergency response, helicopter, rifle, schools, teachers, Dr. etc, etc. etc. that will be wonderful. Not to much experience but learning and as you said in the keynote, getting better. Hope the upgrade is not too hi. Doing for now non profit projects to help. Andrew, you are doing great!!!!! helping us. More tutorials are welcome always. Thanks

Will updates for older element 3D continue to release after V2 comes out?
Hey, Andrew,

I just bought Element 3D a few months ago and am just now using it for a major project. I have an older computer and I have to say it is nothing short of amazing how it harnesses the power in my laptop. And I've been using Cinema 4D for about ten years now. I am excited to see your announcement today or tomorrow!

Last week I had a guy sitting in my edit suite for 2 hours watching me watch progress bars. I said: Go, take a break, it will be done at 2:00. Nope, he had to watch it himself. I told him I couldn't make the electrons in the computer go faster than the speed of light. He wasn't deterred. He was determined to stare at it and wait.

I prefer to live in the real world and give people a break about this sort of thing. It will be done when it's done.

Hey Video Copilot I'm extremely excited for this new version coming out. Last year I used Element 3D entirely to build this animation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PWleB0yTVc at the time is was meant to be the first part of a small 90 minute feature, but after making it, it inspired me to take a step back and start building a much more massive universe to rival Halo and Mass Effect and perhaps surpass them. Quantum Ascension Studios is just getting started, but we're working in both the live action film and 3D animation fields, and 3D Element is a very integral part of our production system. let me know what you think and feel to contact us at quantum.ascension@aol.com

I noticed very carefully that there are shadows! But I hope that they are not the cheap shadow trick u showed in your tutorials. But I noticed that you had a sort 3d environment map or composite environment mapwith the glow from the text. It would be epic of the glow effect built into element for certain models could effect the actual lighting( something like the null parent but with lights. I hope that you guys create more model packs especially for cars seeing that picture! It would be great!!!!! But if these things aren't included I will still brag that videocopilot is the best and annoy them with my vfx geek talk! I'm 13 and love making movies!

Will you be updating the rendering engine at all - perhaps to bring it closer to the speed and quality of other real-time engines such as the Yebis engine, used in programs like Substance Painter? Or perhaps your own physically based engine? If you're allowed to say, then great, if you're waiting for the October 6th reveal, then I shall patiently wait, in anticipation!

OMG! I just had to post a comment for the first time to express how excited I am. I´m buying more from VideoCopilot than I need in my professional work :D , simply because its excellent craftsmanship and because mr.Kramer makes After Effect a more 10x more entertaining playground than any other does. Way to go!
For Element 3d 2.0, I have no idea what the plans are, but here´s what Im hoping for:

-shadows (this one is quite obvious, without a shadow of doubt ;) )
-a even simpler importing system, making it easy to throw models in, of all kinds of formats, etc..
-a better object controller system than particle groups (which I suspect there will be)
-a lot of cool stuff which I cant even image :D

Hey, guys, GREAT NEWS!

During the Q&A, somebody was asked Adrew Kramer the question that we're all dying to know... "What is going to be new in Element 3D v2?"

Here's what Andrew said:

"Shadows... there will be shadows! However, the shadows aren't even close to the biggest new features... and users will no longer be limited to 5 groups or a single object per group."

Can't wait for 6th Oct! :D

Fantastic! Really excited, as a E3D power user, it ends up in almost every project we use. Cineware is great and all, but the lag is just impossible to deal with. We just created a hardware video demo (can't say) that is about to roll out in Sprint stores across the states, and we couldn't have done it as quickly and with such ease of integrating with our AE content as E3D makes possible. Love it... can't wait for the update.

Please... Why should people who just found Element 3D V1 get special treatment over the people who have owned it for a long while perhaps even from launch?? Entitled whining... V2 is a new program. Wait for it if you haven't purchased V1. Pay for it when it comes out if the feature set is of interest to you. AK and co don't owe you anything. Upgrade pricing is a gift and a show of their appreciation for loyal customers. Get a certain body part out of a certain orifice.

For those of you who where wondering about the new features in V2, I spoke with Andrew yesterday*, and he told me a few things:

-The new plugin will self install upon downloading. No need to do anything.
-It will spawn new threads on you computer creating virtual cores for more processing power with the ability to chew a whopping 256 frames a second in 1080p. A bit less in 4k
-Through a new fractal algorithm developed in Latvia, frame rendering and calculation has been increased 16 folds.
-Up to 1024 layers are available and object will self align to each others and will be self conscient about their relative position to the viewer and the camera
-All layer will self rename based on the object inserted.
-Layers will be color coded up to 65,535 colours in the RGB format
-Plugin will self update every weekend through a transparent process to always have current version for optimal performance.
-Plugin will self report and authenticate serial number every day for security and will cease to work after 5 blocked attempts. I.e. if the plugin cannot reach website.
-Element 3D V2 will import ALL major 3D format files including Sketchup, FreeCad, ThinkerCad and STL files
-You will also have the ability to import and scan directly physical object with the soon-to-be-released VC 3D Scanner.
-With a special connection to SIRI (Iphone 6 only) you will have the ability to tell what you want and the plugin will do it for you, no coding, no hassle, no fancy camera manipulations; Element 3D will "guess" correctly what you intend to do cutting down production time.

All these and many more features will be included. For those who have purchased V1, the upgrade price will be 75$ and V2 price point will be 99$.

This should stop the whining and the complaints.

Getting all you can dream of and not paying for it !!

* Disclaimer: I never spoke to Andrew ! Obliviously ! I'm just tired of people who want features that would take them to the moon for FREE and complain about paying for V2. Everybody has a "shopping list" and want this or that !

Stop whining and speculating and wait for the release ! AND PAY FOR IT !! There are even some people who have the nerve of commenting here and they never dished a penny for getting the software !

Good work Andrew ! I WILL GLADLY pay for your work ! You deserve our support and continuous appreciation !

I love the fact that a company like Videocopilot.net is taking a program like After Effects, which in its own right is a create creative tool, and making it better and closer to industry standard programs, ie Nuke, Flame, Mamba, etc...by incorporating 3D elements (no pun)into 2.5D space and evolving what Adobe already has done. Can't wait. Sounds like this will launch around the time Adobe releases the new CC package and Cineware 2.0 Coincidence?
    W(ill)
I agree with your overall sentiment, but disagree with your assertion that AE is not an industry standard. I think it really is a matter of what industry you are referring to. I work for a company that produces the majority of the graphics packages for major sports organizations. We have 10 Emmy's and a slew of other trophies, and I use After Effects every single day.

The problem with Direct X is it is platform specific. It wouldn't be in AK's best interests to provide a feature set that only a portion of end users could benefit from.
I'm just saying I'm hoping it'll look as good as Unreal 4, not saying using that engine... If element can achieve it with Open GL than that's great! =)

I can't wait! I purchased element 3d v1 right when it came out. VC always has incredibly generous pricing. I'd pay full price (with a smile on my face) to upgrade to v2 if it were the only option because the value is always so great.

E3D V2 Support for Mac Pro 2014 ? i think not support amd firepro vga.

E3D V1 is Not Support for mac pro 2014, so very slow and not good.

I want to question.

I remember how excited I was when Element 3D was released. It didn't take me long to decide that I wanted to buy it. In the recent years, I've switched to Nuke though. I rarely use after effects for visual effect-related projects anymore so I think I may sit this one out. There's no denying though, that V2 will probably be awesome and I wish I could get it just for the sake of playing with it. I will still be really excited to watch updates and videos of what the updated plugin can do!

I've been staring at the fullscreen version of that corvette for a while now, and I have to say, it doesn't get more photoreal than that. If V2 retains the render times of V1, its going to be pretty freakin' awesome...

Cool future....

    JMS
    That's not a render, it's Andrew's actual car. (He's compensating...)
Júnior Porciúncula
I thinks this car, "rendered in V2", is a joke. Andrew has better and more realistic renders with older versions, like 1.5. I assume that the REAL V2 will come with raytraced reflections, shadows and modifiers (like 3DS Max). Can't wait for November. No doubt that we will be VERY surprised!
    John
I wouldn't think that E3D v2.0 will do raytracing. That sort of thing chews up a TON of horsepower, and would slow down the plugin. Most likely, it will build off of the Open GL underpinnings. But other than shadows, here's my predictions:

    - Shadows (of course)
    - Layer opacity styles (see Star Trek: Into Darkness end credits)
    - Mention by Andrew of position data change for objects... What could this mean? Maybe adding anchor points to different material layers for better animations?
    - Reflections?? (This would be a dream... But I can only see this implemented to limited effect... Not true raytracing, but maybe a general hack with doubling and mirroring objects?)
    - Displacement layer! This is possible to do in OpenGL. It would truly step the game up to the next level (Displacement is like a Normal map, but modifies the geometry itself in incredible ways).

Ok, so this is more of a wish list... hehehe. :)
Well John I asked this sort of thing here and Andrew mentioned that Element's engine may be open for these sort of things in the future as mentioned by him here: http://www.videocopilot.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=42&p;=345062 And now that Octane Render for example will be made into an AE Plugin I dont see why the same shouldnt be possible for Element as well. Ah well we can always dream i guess :) but nevertheless I am super thrilled for October 6th and November. Let the good times roll!

Hopefully you add the option to rig that would be insane you already changed after effects and made it better than any compositing program out right especially since you focus on speed and fluidness of the program
5 years ago
Well Andrew, you know we all love you and everything, so this is meant in the spirit of tough love...

WTF was THAT? A product 'announcement' without so much as a tentpole feature list? I know you're occupied with AE world, but I can't fathom why you would make an announcemnet you can give no value to for another 2 weeks. Why not wait until Oct 6 when you had stuff to tell / show us? The only thing this announcement is going to accomplish at this point is stopping sales of V1, unless you update the announcement that with a caveat that anyone buying V1 now through release date will get V2 for free... otherwise, this was a counterproductive tease.

Anyway, good luck with AE World... I now have to go a deal with my VCP-induced blueballs.

YES!! I agree. I always run out of layers. Mostly this could be solved if I could see objects of the same layer together in the Element interface. For example, mostly I use the layers to move/scale objects. They could be part of the same layer, but its hard to place objects just by adjusting anchor points alone. Please add the ability to see objects in relation to each other!

Hi AK.. I have a question
How E3D control motion like a Train,. Thnx Love VC
    5 years ago
When you say "like a train" you mean like the one on the tracks right? You could either animate it elsewhere and import an OBJ sequence or you can create a path. (I'm pretty sure you can create one in 3D just like you can in 2D. You'd use the top view to do it. Then take your train objects and attach them to one another and move them along the path. Make sure the wheels are seperate objects so that you can have them rotate.

    Fotomojo
You will probably grow old and die if you are going to wait for a box version to return. It is highly unlikely.
    W(ill)
Fotmojo is right, the days of boxed software are coming to an end. Eventually you'll have to move on or be left behind. Perhaps someone will come along and create a worthy competitor to AE, but to arrive at the expansive ecosystem that After Effects currently enjoys would still take considerable time, all the whole you're work will suffer as those nimble enough to stay on top of new tech will surpass you, and get all the jobs you once got. Like it or not, subscriptions are here to stay. It is the cost of doing business in the world of VFX / Motion Graphics.
    Steve Green
Happy to stick with CS6, Adobe don't seem to be in any rush to add anything vital to CC, and why should they when people lock themselves into a rental model?

Really, people and companies should have taken a united stand against CC when it was first introduced - shame they're so short-sighted in thinking they're getting something cheap.
In reply to mr. Steve green. I disagree when you look at how much it would cost you to purchase all of the Adobe programs like after effects, premiere, photoshop, etc. It would take about 2-3yrs at the $50-60/month to break even with the thousands these programs cost. And the subscription model allows you to get updates without having to purchase upgraded versions like most software. It also allows people, who don't have hundreds or thousands of dollars to spend, get familiar with the programs and build communities.
