I took a stab at this project using AE 6.5. I had to improvise and do a bunch of manual keyframe settings; becuase, 6.5 doesn't have all the same fancy tools CS3 does - such as fractal noise and glow. I'm struggling with larger resolutions...the sphere's come out looking like eggs. Anyway...awesome tutorial. Here's my version of your project - the egg version.

You can use Spherize instead of CC Shpere

Something to keep in mind is that if you are going to be using this for anything other than personal use, you can NOT use Google images. It's a violation of their license. However, NASA lets you use their images for free with no restrictions. As for the rotation, to ensure that you have a smooth rotation (without any hiccups, seamless rotation, etc.), put a keyframe in the first frame, then hit End to go the end of your comp and hit the PageDown key on your keyboard to advance one frame past the end, and in the Y Rotation, make it 1x360.

To find the earth pictures just do a google image search for 'Earth Map', it should be one of the first results. Same thing for the clouds, just do a google image search for 'Could Map' there are a few of each, just pick your favourites.

I found this to be a great tutorial. For added realism I duplicated the cloud layer, placing it under the original, and made the mode silhouette luma and offset it slightly and adjusted the opacity to create shadows of the clouds - it added a nice sense of depth to the atmosphere making the clouds appear to be up off the surface of the planet.

Alright anyone who has cc sphere, u most likely got it through the cycore fx hd pack, alright let me tell why there is a big x on it. It is because it is not unlocked, and its cost hundreds of dollars to buy the unlock key, buts that's for cycore fx 1.5 or 1.6, so I advise you to get 1.1. search cycore on youtube and look throught the videos, if when you download it and it says 1.5 or 1.6 delete it, and look for the 1 thats says 1.1 or 1.01, because it is already unlocked and there wont be any X, OK

Hello! I saw this tutorial and I spend more time with those stars and I noticed they are not every where when you use "Camera tool". If you need 3D stars you do particles and effect Particular and change the "Animatoin Present" to "t_SarfieldStatic1" that make it look like you are in space looking around.
I learned that from "Colorful Universe" tutorial.

Everyone who is complaining about the CC plugins..you need to BUY after effects and not steal it from the internet, then you will find the plugins on the install CD!!

Guys, to find the earth image, just go to google images and type in "earth map 1000x500", the first two are reversed, but you can flip them in photoshop. For the clouds, type in google images: "cloud map" that's the same one as in the vid

I had watched this tutorial before but I couldn't participate because it turned out my version wasn't legit. but now I have a legit version and I did this one last night. I love it!!!!

I tweaked it to have the "eclipse" coming around the back of the earth and slowly moving off. I was going to post it but it's 1 gig big and seems to hang up in the middle.

New camera = £750, After Effects = £1.075, A new PC that can handle it all = £1,689.
That converts to about $500,000 or something like that.I think it is 100% worth it though,now i can use After Efffects properly thanks to you.

I was creating the same thing and I found a nice idea, for the clouds, you can apply on it CC sphere and make it a little bigger radius than the earth, select the render mode: outside and apply a shadow on it, so the skys put a littre shadow on the earth like reality. And when earth turns, we see on the edges a nice sky effect!!!

**Helpful Hint For Viewers**
I found this to be a good tutorial, but I ran into the problem of having the clouds create a seam on side of the globe where they connected. This is do to the fact that Motion Tile is being used. *So what I suggest for anyone who wants to get around this issue is to make the clouds another layer on top of all of the earth layers, turn the mode to screen, throw a cc sphere effect on it. When this is done go to the effects panel of the cloud layer you just created and alt click the radius plus the offset and link them to the master earth's radius and offset. Then to get the clouds moving just mess with rotation of the cc sphere effect you threw on it. I hope this helps

I was trying to take info from this tutorial for a project im working on...but i dont have the dang CC Sphere effect. Does anyone else notice they don't have the effects Andrew uses? I spoke with him and he says they should be there...im wondering if i did something wrong or if there are others who don';t have the effects.

Hi :) Your tuts are amasing but i have a little Question and that is: When i sc´rub thru the footage when im done with the parenting stuff the globe have a white frame around it and i don't know why. Please help me!

this tutorial was great! Put it in 3D space along with a few other planets and animated the camera and a sun... wanted an effect like "INTERNET KILLED THE VIDEO STAR" trailer with the Earth and the sun, it's worked out well...
but I have got this green X through planet Earth, no idea why its there, what it's doing or whatever...
If anyone knows give me a shout!

When i open project it wont work. also when i try to make 1 the cc sphere wont work. after effects says i have to install these things for it to work. what am i doing wrong? it would be great to know

Hey, just wanted to say I really appreciate your site. The tutorials and products are amazing! I just upgraded from AE 6.5 standard to CS3, so they've been a huge help.

I'm wondering if there's a simple way to combine the earth zoom effect with the 3d earth in this tutorial. Any chance you can revisit this?

And people asking for the CC sphere plugin, all the CC presets will install with CS3 (not with the trial though), and it should come with 7.0. If you have an older version or a trial version, you won't have it unfortunately.
