At 25:16 Andrew as a small white bar at the bottom of his field. He clicks and hits the tilda key and then it magically disappears.

I have that white bar too and I was wondering how exactly to get rid of it. Thanks.
by sultan 07/12/2010
hi andrew,
the work you do here is amazing
by Dave 07/05/2010
I think it looks amazing, that one extra bit that would make it look more effective is the top sky layer becoming brighter and more exposed as it disappears, as when recording video footage from a light to dark area, the light blows out as it is adjusting to the darker footage. :)

by Tinky Winky 07/03/2010

by Cody 04/29/2010
Hey Andrew, I have a question that you could probably answer. I am trying to accomplish this effect, but with the camera moving towards the wall then going through. I have 3d rooms with the camera animated to pass through the wall into the next room. How would you go about adding the stuff inside the wall before the camera comes out the other side? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated, as I'm kind of at a standstill on this project.

Thanks, Cody

by JWashington 01/11/2010
I've tried both the PS viewpoint and the camera projection for projects like theses. Which do you recommend as being the most effective. I know the viewpoint way has some seious camera and scaling issues. Would you say the control factor is more managable using the projection method?
Thanks again.

Andrew, I don't have anything new to say, but I just had to write again and say "thank you" again for sharing your knowledge with us. I really appreciate you and wish you all the best in life.

I hope you have a great Christmas with your lovely family (and with Sam, lovely or otherwise. Actually Sam seems like a great guy, I'm sure Christmas with Sam would be a blast).

I hope your holidays are safe and wonderful.

Thanks yet again, and blessings,
Shawn

Hola Andrew! Congratulations for this website, is the bible for the new generation in the world of posproduction. I did this tutorial a few days ago, and this is the result:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xgTodgdCBs
(the original was in 16:9, I don´t know why Youtube reconvert in 4:3)
And one more thing: A group of friends have a webserie, here in Spain, called "Malviviendo" ("Badliving"), the website is: www.malviviendo.com, I do the making of and some support in postproduction of the two last episodes(there is only a guy for all postproduction), sometimes your tutorials save our lifes, thank you Andrew! By the way, some televisions like FOX (FOX Spain) are interest in Malviviendo, maybe you can see it in the future in the international tv. Ah, There is no subtittles for now, sorry, if you want to watch it I hope you know advanced Spanish, in the south we speak very close. Thaks for your time, sorry for my English, and long life for Videocopilot! Hasta otra!

Andrew,

You are a very talented person. I looked around for AE tutorials on the web before. No tutorials have ever impressed me as much as yours. Your tutorials are simply out of this world and your artistic vision is second to none.

It is funny watching TV because I see your ideas used a lot.

You are really just that good.
by romain 10/17/2009
WOw I'm french and these tutorials are VERY GREAT !!
Why depensing money with a teatcher, you are here !

by Kathleen Caballa 10/16/2009
Your work inspires me! This site is marked as one of my resources when I'm stuck on a video idea. I'm going to graduate in December and I need to make a demo reel. Your tutorials will help me out a lot. Thanks Andrew!
by Thibor 10/16/2009
Hey Andrew, hey guys.

I'm just trying out this tutorial but a problem occured. From the moment of switching the Light Transmission to 100%, my image gets totally blurry. Well, in fact, it's out of focus and the only way to get it sharp is, to put it right on the same plane as the background. But by doing so, the whole concept of projection gets lost.
What I dont understand: Why is my image out of focus although the camera option of DOF is disabled? Even when I change the focal plane of the camera to the image plane it doesn't change.

Is there anyone here, who can help me getting out of this disaster?

best regards, thibor.
by Thebearrorist 10/16/2009
Hey, I tried making this same scene but I used pictures in 3d space without camera mapping and had the same results. What would be the benefit of projecting the pictures the way you did in the tut?
by Paci 10/16/2009
hey Andrew, for me apart the guys from Total training, you're the best in AE. I'm a novice in AE and I'm african (Burundi). I really thank you and watch this

by Antonio 10/12/2009
hey andrew, how are you doing?

See, there's a new bunch of awesome commercials here in Portugal for a communications' company and everybody's wondering how those were done, apparently using some after effects plugin. It might possibly be re:vision re:flex, i don't know. Would you care to take a look and dismistify this riddle, i think it would actually make a nice tut? Find them here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_I7qPvkj_c

I've been trying this with HD Video footage but it just comes out blurry, I tried messing with the Comp quality settings and the Light diffuse settings but nothing seems to work. It seems that using HD video instead of a J-peg is a whole different ballgame with this Tut.
by Ben 10/11/2009
Hey Andrew, love this tut.
I was using a hires picture when attempting this tutorial, and when I used shadow projection the result came out all blurry. I tried a bunch of things, and what I discovered is that in Comp Settings, you have to go to Advanced and then Options, and change the Shadow Map Resolution to a high number. Just letting everybody know, let me know if this helps!

by Newn 10/11/2009
Andrew! I had some problems ..the shadows were not projectet to the 3d layers I made, I work in CS4 I tried to change the light fron a spot to a point and still nothing...my PC is a 4400 dualcore 4Gb of ram and 1659 mb video, after half of day of thinking :P I discovered by mistake that if I change the fast preview fron OpenGL witch I normaly use to Adaptive resolution the shadows will show!!!.....Qestion! why does'nt the shadows show in OpenGL? is it a default on Adobe or an eror on my PC? ....sorry if my questions are stupid :(

ANDREW, ANDREW, ANDREW:

You SERIOUSLY don't know how shocked I was when i went on VCP today and fund this tutorial. I was literally going to try one of these myself this afternoon, and wham! you had a professional example to work off, I seriously couldn't believe it. I went around telling everyone in my class.

I'm actually designing a music video for my band (Zuluhotel) towards my Honors degree in Motion, it's got a sci-fi, anti technology/identity loss in computer civilization theme.

So far I've incorporated:

Basic training stuff (of course)
3D city
Vanishing point (god-sent)
Burning up particle guy
and now THIS tutorial!

Once again, I just want to thank you man, you don't understand. I wouldn't be where I am without VCP!

Thanks!

Wes,
Wellington, New Zealand.

by Tran Trung 10/09/2009
hey Pablo,
using Force Blur is fast and easy more than motion blur from layer because there are many Layer from 2 Comp so user filter Fx more easier than motion blur from layer.
Thank Andrew for Amazing Tutorial. Nice Work and Keep going.
by Jeremy Fabiano 10/09/2009
After doing the tutorial 15 times over and over.. and still coming up with a blurry projection, I've figured out what's up..

In "light settings" check to make sure your shadow diffusion is ZERO (0) Pixels!!!

It isn't mentioned in the tutorial, but if you pause it right hen AK sets up the light it says zero. I changed mine to zero and all of a sudden everything's working perfectly :)

Great tutorial Andrew!

Hey, Andrew! First of all great tutorial! I've thought about this for a long time.

But here's a thing; Why not copy the camera from projection comp 1 to projection comp 2? Wouldn't this solve the issue of the comp's different speed?

Does it help to have less or foreground elements in the shots you're panning to/from?

Andrew, your tutorials are really splendid! Was thinking last night to give you a shout and suggest a few ideas around future tutorials. So I'll just list them here right now and you can say 'sure' and do the shifty eye thing:

- Smallville tutorials to emulate all dem special super hero abilities like heat vision, super fast running, super high jumping, and others.

- Tutorial about a 'normal' moving character while everything around him is buzzing around at fast forward motion or slow motion as seen in the movie 21.

- End of the World tutorials like an atom bomb exploding over a city, tidal waves, or a meteorite smashing into earth and creating a shockwave.

The list goes on, but I'll stop here for now :)
I think in short, just a few tutorials to help the guys n' gals here create a few Heroes-like short movies. Now there's an idea! Perhaps you could host a competition on this site to see who creates the best super hero scene or something and give away something neat, like a Twitch/Riot Gear bundle or... something...

Anyways, keep up the GREAT work! :)

Take care

Taking the photos and the live footage from the same direction, then masking out the actors the first seconds, perhaps?

@ paul above:

Yes, you can do this same effect in nuke, and probably even better since nuke has a much sturdier 3D portion to it. The technique is the same however. Lining up layers to each other, offsetting them in z space, etc.
