This effect just gets me really angry. When I click away sometimes, or I go to edit something (and I KNOW I didn't click on something that I wasn't supposed to), the particles don't emit anymore. So forget this effect. But overall, good job creating it. 4*s.

Thanks for showing us this technique. A cool thing I found to add, is if you put the text in the center of the frame, and have the particles die off before they reach the edge, you can precompose the layers and add some nice secondary motion by animating the position of the precomp. I've got a 4 word line of text where each word has this effect on it, and they all start out in the center of the line and grow out.

Ok. So I know this might sound like an unintelligent question but when I try to use particular. My particles don't show up at all. So I can't figure out the dimensions that I need for my box around the text. Just wondering if you could help me out a bit. I am not a pro, but I think this is a great turorial, except for one thing. That he is using that trapcode>particular effect even though it is not standard and you have to purchase it. I have tried using particle world, as he mentions, but he doesn't say how to use it, and I think, it is comletely different from the other effect, and I would be very grateful, if he showed how to use that effect in this tutorial...THANKS:)

hey awesome tutorial i have being delving around the text tutorials and with this i found that instead of the glow you used i used the lightsaber glow from your lightsaber v2 tutorial but its a bit too intense so i just turned the glow down a bit it makes a realy cool effect.

Another idea for this I had today is animate the particles based on the speed of a null object that is driven by music that were turned into keyframes

Hey AK, this is my first post but I have been watching you tutorials for a week now, I just finished watching ALL of them. Something cool you can do with this effect is have the particles come on as the camera moves. Depending on the speed of the camera as it flies around in a title sequence the particles can come on and leave a streak from where the camera was to where it is going...just a thought...

I did the project and I also pre compose the text and now I can't change the text, HOw can I change the text after working with the other one. I don't want to go back and start all over again with other text is there a way I can just change the setting already saved on the pre compose text to the new one.

I just have one concern.

Awesome tutorial. I really like this effect. I noticed that if you don't precompose the text then the particle emmiter doesn't line up with the text properly. Although you can add the difference in position to the appropriate expression but you get into trouble again if you do the text rotation. Easier to pre-compose. =]

What type of computer do you record your tutorials with?

Dual quad-core Xeon @ 3 Ghz. 4 gigs of ram and a raptor drive and a Geforce 8800 GTX. Before that I used a custom built Intel Core 2 Duo 6800 Extreme Processor with 2GBs of DDR2 Ram and a Geforce 7950 GX2 as well as a 150GB 10k Raptor Hard Drive. thanx a lot man... thanx to this tut i actually got to understand expression! i did a pretty cool fx by putting that code and changing it a bit, instead of using a particle i wrote wiggle and when the speed goes up to x value the wiggle increases and for the rest the wiggle stays (0,0) :D thanx a lot keep like this!!

You can use a layer as an emitter instead of a box , set the layer RGB usage to RGB - size,vel,rot!!

Amazing, I had no idea you could manipulate particles like that in After Effects.

You know Andrew, there's a lot more to learn from your tutorials than meets the eye. For instance, I learned about pressing U to show animated variables as well as control clicking to change keyframe types both from this tutorial and those alone greatly speed up my workflow. I can't thank you enough, but I hope my future purchase of some of your products will make do.

Hey, great work you guys.
I saw your website a few days ago and i'm already a big fan of yours.
I made my personal intro based on your tutorial of video copilot turning into particles, it's great, but there's a red cross that appears in the middle of the screen. It's from the particular layer I think.
How can I shut it down? Even after exporting to .avi it steal remains there...
Another question, when I export that video to .avi in the best quality it doesn't have so much quality in the .avi file. It's a litle pixelized. What's your suggestion?

I've set it up as a DVD Menu BG. All elements come from VC. Water effect is 3 layers of ink flows from Riot Gear with shine. Animated arrows from Evolution point to speed effect event revealing the MWP logo. Grunge texture from Riot Gear. Sound FX from VC SFX collection.

It can be done with AE's default particle system (I have done it) If I get a chance I'll upload the project (CS3) somewhere so you can see what the settings are.

It's not 100% perfectly replicated, but it works and looks good still.

It seems to me that Particular reacts to the audio peak a frame too late... so I pre-compose the comp, turn off the audio in the pre-comp, re-add the audio track and slip it forward a frame... this way the visual matches the beat perfectly.

Oh, one more note... Andrew, it said in your tut, that you were also using a demo version (Under preview, in the fx window)but you didn't have that red "X" and that red annoying text... It seems weird to me though! :)

I hate Particular, when I render (Using demo mode) theres this red cross, and the text: "Demo version - Press "options" to register" ... Pretty annoying, when u wanna make a movie ...

Definitly I dont work without it, the best particle engine for AE worth the cash if you use it, having said that sometime depending on project cost and time CC particle world (inbuilt with AE) with a few tweaks and expressions can be made to do great things as well.

Nice tutorial. I'm trying to learn so I can use it for some of my club's presentation. But there is some problem I always encounter. The expressions I type keep "breaking up". The particular suddenly stops following the expression and keeps emitting particles. Then I have to retype it again. Then breaks up again. HOw can i solve this?

ahh hey, another suggestion for using the speed expression is you could film a passenger bus and once it hits a certain speed, say 50 MPH, a bomb activates and the bus has to stay going at least 50 MPH or the bus explodes.

Great stuff as usual! But wouldn't it be more physically accurate to use the actual acceleration of the layer to drive the emission rate of the particles, rather than checking if the speed exceeds a certain value?

I haven't used AE much yet, but if it doesn't offer an easy expression to obtain the acceleration (like "layer.position.acceleration" or something like that), you could easily approximate it by subtracting the speed at the previous frame from the speed at the current frame.

Just a tip to you and/or the viewers.

If you're tired of the wiggle effect. Try using Motion sketch!
Motion sketch can either capture the movement of your mouse, or you can pickwhip a real-footage that is tracked, to the motion sketch null, and voila! YOu've got reallife movement!!
