AE 4.1, good times, good times :P .
I still have an old machine in my bedroom that I never use with Windows 3.0 and After Effects using all of my 512KB of RAM :). Too bad that AE CS3 doesn't use only 6MB of disk space anymore.

by Juan Marco 10/19/2007
Everyone, the original After Effects was created by CoSA, which was the Company of Science and Art, before Aldus aquired them (and then Adobe aquired Aldus). Way back then, After Effects allowed us to do on a Mac what was normally done on high-end expensive SGI workstations. I've been using AE ever since version 1.0.

Thanks for all the great tutorials, Andrew.
by Michael Appel 10/19/2007

Haha, 4.1 was the first version I ever used too. Thanks a lot for the tutorial, why such an old version on this one, just to show it's possible with almost any version of AE? Been a while, hope life's good.
by Joe Vallero 10/13/2007
Thanks Andrew. You give, hands down, the best tutorials on the web. My After Effects has gotten so much better since I found Video Co-Pilot.

by avelinux 10/12/2007
Hi, I was watching your tutors and let me say: CONGRATULATIONS!!!, your page is pretty close to be the best in AE training, really!!!, I`m not an english speaker and I can understand all your speech, very better than others tutorial•s page, its amazing!!!.
I have a little question for you: It is possible to copy opacity data from one layer to paste in the brightness control of an effect o vice versa?,or to copy from an effect origin position to a layers position?, I try to do it directly and I cant in AE6.5 maybe in 7 its possible, I don`t know, your suggestion will be welcome, and thanks again for that magnificent tutorials
by Gonzalo 10/12/2007
Andrew you are the BEST!!!!
soy de Argentina y desde que conoci tu site te has convertido en mi guía imprecindible. Un saludo afectuoso.
by Small Town Commercial Maker 10/12/2007
Nice, very smooth and quick.

I like the way Andrew pumps himself up:
"That is looking great!"
Something I think I shall start implementing in my editing bay, even if people think I am crazy.

BTW - Has a Tutorial come out for the 3D Drop of the Creative Cows Title ? I created something similar using the Ford Oval, but never got the heavy feeling to it. May have just been a perspective thing.

Anyway - Keep up the grand work Andrew, learning more from you in five minutes then I have in all my years in this editing bay.
by der meister 10/12/2007
i hoped that i had a new tutorial for my birthday (today), but, i still have some ones to do, so, it doesn't matter

You are wery crasy...
by Tuomo K 10/11/2007
Haha! Excellent stuff, I pissed my pants!

Damn I remember when I opened AE 4 for the first time and -poof- there was nothing there, I had no idea what to do with it or how to get started. After staring at the UI for a week I found the Create New Composition dialog, and I was sold and have been an AE user ever since.

Keep it up. Cheers from Finland!
by andi 10/11/2007
you've posted FOUR new tutorials since i last checked, god damn! i would have been happy with just one, you workaholic :)
by Karim 10/11/2007
Excelent tutorial, thanks for that Andrew
by BBC Will 10/11/2007
I hope in order to balance this tut out your next one will be in AE CS9? Like Terminator you'll bring us a tut from the future? Damn I need to know how to do a light saber...
by bE 10/11/2007
The first version I remember seeing was version 3.0. when I was producing spots for a local television station back in 1995, and I remember it used to take all night to render out just simple text effects.

I myself didn't start using AE until version 6.5 but I recently upgraded to version 7...I say all that to say...now it takes all night to render out a comp that's got a camera (with multiple moves), 6 lights (creating shadows), multiple layers with multiple effects on each layer.

AE has come so far!!

Great tut by the way...kickin' it ol' school!!

All the best,

bE
by vi54 10/11/2007
send this to adobe

it will teach them its not the package that counts but the effectiveness of the tools!

ever tried to open a animated gif in photoshop cs3?
:cries:

keep 'm coming andrew, you are helping a ton of people with these tuts.

regards!
by Jimmy Alenius 10/11/2007
Stuff like this makes me feel soooo oooold!!! I have flashbacks from my Cosa 1.0 and 3D Studio Dos r4 times and I have to say it's both good and bad. Things that used to be special and "hightech" are standard today. I hope to se some Strata Studio Pro (mac) tutorials some day. That HAVE to be a real pain in the but to make.

/Jimmy

give AK a break. its not the end of the week, yet. After all what a great way to end the week with a great tutorial so hopefully tomorrow will be the day. there's nothing like eating b-fast at the office watching AK tutorials. greatness! First thing i do every day at work.

Self reminder: Can't wait until we have the option to DL tutorials online, or select buy them at a fair price. Regardless i will buy the collection disc when it comes out.

Cool tutorial Andrew. As always ;)

One thing I noticed! In "Resident Evil: Extinction" they use your EarthZoom effect twice! I don't know if they used your but it's pretty close to it! If you havn't seen it, go check it out! :)

Keep up the good work!

Hey Andrea???

(ragecg Says:
10/10/2007 - 10:10
WOW Andrea, if you think you're old, I remember working with my brand-spanking new copy of 3D Studio DOS. (seriously).)

Hmmmm.... I always thought it was AndreW myself, must DEFINITELY be a sign of old age
Thats ok, I only have 5 years and I will be caught up with you!!

Oh yeah, about the tutorials.... good stuff! It is a nice feeling knowing that every once in a while even a PRO can't always find the button he is looking for.

I always enjoy hopping on this site to see what new and entertaining tutorials [AND COMMENTS] have been posted.

Thanks Andrew (a.k.a. Andrea)

LIke all of the others.. great tutorial! Haven't seen an unuseful tutorial yet...

Hi Andrew: How about having a tutorial to get a lookalike to the effect used in the movie "A scanner darkly" - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405296/

maholo from Frankfurt Germany!!
by Finn Margrie 10/11/2007
Quite similar to AE 5, the first one i used, but now I'm on the little less retro 6.5. I want the entire CS3 suite, but that would require a new computer, lol.
by Eran Stern 10/11/2007
Hi Andrew,
I'm still using CoSA After Effects 3.1, and I can't find where are the Adujstment layers?

Great Tut, as always

Have been a big fan since I knew about your site from Creative Cow.
The promos of your products are usually very good. It's a good idea that you start showing us more how you do it.

Thanks Again

O Brasil todo está ligado em você Andrew, parabéns ! (Portuguese)

Brazil all is on in you Andrew, congratulations!

by ragecg 10/10/2007
WOW Andrea, if you think you're old, I remember working with my brand-spanking new copy of 3D Studio DOS. (seriously).

I just turned 35 today, (tyty, no applause, just throw money), and when I saw Andy's tutorial here I was reminded of the says when Aldus was bought by Adobe (sometime in 1994) and using my first copy of AE v2.0.
...and of course Power Animator & Dynamation (now known together as Maya).

Now THATS old, hehe...

...Don't you kids piss me off or I'll beat you with my cane! lol...
by S Gilbert 10/10/2007
