Hey Andrew, it's Nick from Italy... These are my first 2 days on After Effect, and since I've found your website, and your tutorials, I grew up so much with it! You made such a good job...

However let's come to the point... I've tried to do this blowing up effect... and well I tried to ad a "shaking" just around the explosion frames... (not more than 5/6 frames)... I've taken inspiration by the earthquake tutorial... It looks like the planet before "pump" up the energy, than shakes and blows out so powerfully... (sorry for any English mistake)...

Great job man!! Keep on doin'em...

Cheers, Nick

Hi Andrew,

I love you, you're the greatest man ever... Well that's already been said.

This is the video I made with your tutorial. I don't have the "action movie essentials" so there is no explosion in the center, but I added some glow to produce this effect !

I keyframe the force1 strength but it doesn't shatter...it only shatters when their's no keyframes but i want to delay it a little while....what am i doing wrong?
by Henk 05/15/2008
Great tutorial, but I've got a question. How do you get the falling debris of the exploded planet outside the planet-object? I am doing a similair tutorial from someone else, but the debris of the exploded window (in my case) is falling into nowhere, it disappears outside when falling outside the window.

Excuse me for my bad english, I'm not a native English speaker.
by Albert 05/09/2008

I found that if you apply Fractal Noise onto the Shockwave, results will be better. Tinker with the Fractal Noise.
by danno 03/16/2008
What an awesome service you offer Andrew. When I first happened upon your site, I thought, "cool, I'll look at some of these tutorials but I don't need any of the products". But then I proceded to watch nearly every one of your tutorials (haven't gotten much sleep!). Now, having experienced the exceptional quality of your work (on the tutorials), I will purchase/try some of your products - because if they measure up to the quality level of your tutorials, it will indeed be money well spent!

ONE REQUEST: The visual/run quality of your tuts is also superb. Could you please share with us (or, hey, make a tutorial) the basics of how you make these; what you use to capture screen, edit, output format and settings, how you host, etc.).

Thanks again,
Danno

P.S. Please keep these tutorials coming! Your brand of 'extra-day' humor is priceless, and makes great tutorials ever so much more fun to experience!
by Alexander 03/16/2008

by Brutus 01/27/2008
Great job Andrew! I am actually working on my own film where I need a planetary explosion, and this tutorial was great!

I was wondering, would you ever consider doing this same tutorial using 3DS MAX? It would be great to see how similar or different the final results would be.

thanks again!
by BT 01/07/2008
First of all, I LOVE your tutorials. They are the best on the web. I just started using AE and your tutorials were VERY helpful.

Just wanted to add something to this effect (requires Trapcode Shine though).
Apply this effect to the prerendered planet and set Transfer Mode to overlay (in effect settings), colorize to Fire and Base on Alpha. This really gives the explosion more strength. Also, you have to play around with the Shine Opacity and Boost Light settings (so the Shining will fade in and out (when explosion finishes)).

I hope I can come up with new ideas in the future, but for now I'll use your tutorials to get around in AE :).
by narayanan k 01/02/2008
very nice tutorial as always.
thank you

Hi there!
I just wanted to let you know that I used this tutorial (and some of the expressions and workarounds from your other stuff) for a little band-introduction video. I'm not going to post the link here, but if you're interested in seeing it (for whatever reason you would be interested in seeing own your work re-done by lesser beings ) feel free to e-mail me.
Happy new year!

by Danny 12/08/2007
Awesome!
by Mark Smith 12/08/2007
Its a really cool tutorial but what would make it even better is using the same trapcode particular effect you used on the blood tutorial but with a rock created in a 3D program then you could animate some of the debris heading towards the camera with a wiggle effect for impact. I can't do this as I can't afford any of the 3D programs. But if some one out there could provide a 1 sec rock video like the blood cell then maybe we could all have a go at it with trapcode free trial download.

Loved the tutorial, but I'm probably missing something. I took a green screen person and applied the shatter filter and the person simply disappears from the screen and nothing short of turning the shatter filter off will make them reappear. It looks pretty simple in the tute. What am I doing wrong??? I figured I could explode a person just like the planet.

Yeah this is awesome, I've worked alot with apps like Photoshop and Dreamweaver but never even knew what After Effects was. I actually have it cause I bought Adobe apps and packs at extremely good student discounts here in Sweden so after watching all the tutorials here and the basic training ones I definately gotta try it out for myself.

Notice I did that you referenced the 2 FORCES in the properties of the shatter plug in. No coincidence this is, hmmm? Only one force there is but for some who choose the dark side of the force a separate force there is . Perplexed am I. Oh well, sorry I'm a SW geek. Happy Holidays and "May The 2 Forces Be With You. Oh yeah, great tutorial. You rock.

u did a gr8 Job another gr8 tutorial. Man its awsome .
by Joe Avino 11/28/2007
This was another great tutorial. The thing I enjoy most about your tutorials is the potential to create completely different things using some of the basic techniques that you outline. I probably am going to make the shatter particles less blocky; maybe that way it would look a little more realistic. This is still a great effect though, keep it up!
by Blake 11/28/2007
That was awesome! I was questioning how it would look until you did the final force blur effect on it and I was pretty sold. It looks like a Sci-Fi Channel Original movie effect, but hey, on no budget and just about half an hour, give or take, that's good enough for me. Sweet job!
by Giovanni from Italy 11/28/2007
Thank you Andrew, without your help it would be so more difficult to start make my dream come true...make the earth explode..well not really...make me start to study in the world of special fx...anyway hope one day i can thank you in person so you can say thank you to me for buying your products well as soon as i can i'll purchase the Evolution one..See ya and good work

Also, I caught the season premiere of the History Channel's "The Universe" last night, and it was titled "Alien Planets." One of the planets looked suspiciously like the scene you create in this tutorial...am I wrong in thinking that you did some work for them? If so, cheers!

Speaking of squirrels, have you seen these vicious, man-eating "twirls?" Ravenous tigers have been mating with common squirrels to create small, but deadly carnivores that strike from the treetops. Be careful out there. By the way...awesome tutorial. And "Evolution?" To quote Jello Biafra, "If evolution is banned, only outlaws will evolve." Well, I bought my copy and...well, just call me an outlaw. Thanks Sir Andrew!

FOR "KRAMER _WANNA_BE:

Any laptop will work as long as it has sufficient system recourses. Here is a spec list that of components that After Effects needs to run efficiently:

2GB RAM

128 (256 recommended) video card

2.2 Ghz (or higher(or higher, I recommend 2.6+)

Intel or AMD processor

120 GB Hard drive

DVD burner

These are all recommendations for running After Effects smoothly.

Fantastic stuff again andrew! I can really use this one thanks! Ive already played with the settings and so forth and pretty happy with how realistic it looks. watched it on the big TV a few times and im missing something. Is it possible to have control over the shatter preset so one piece of debris flies towards the camera and blacks out the whole screen, sort of thing seen in independence day? Would be a great help if you could advise, thanks again!

Andrew,
Another awesome tutorial, I can't wait to get home and give it a try. One question though; there was a wiggle in there and I am assuming you pre-composed the entire comp, parented the comp to the null and then applied the wiggle to the null layer? Either I am super smart or just showing how clueless I really am. Thanks again :)
by rjm 11/26/2007
Hey Andrew, once again nice tutorial... :)
just an idea I got to make the video more realistic ( i think)...

you could make also the Magma blow away... :)

To get a full screen preview, hold your mouse over the window you want to enlarge (in your case, the preview window) and press the tilde key. You just press it again to go back to normal.
And in case you're not sure what key that is, it's the one that's next to the "1" on your keyboard. It looks like a squiggly line.

This is fantastic, i use AE all the time, its so interesting to see how others use it and how they organise their workflow. The shockwave technique is great such a speedy way to do it too. ACE STUFF.

Did you create some of the smoke effects on the Action Essentials CD with AfterBurn?

Best

Thanks again for this great one. An exploding planet was the thing I was searching for to edit my little “Don´t fool around with our nature†video. Again it was a great pleasure.
