275 RESPONSES TO "LIGHT STREAKS 2" by pixelrgb 08/27/2010 Thanks Andrew!~ I love your tutorials and just wanted to share that if you use a 3D motion tracker like the one in Maya Live, you can then bake the keyframes of your "Locator" in 3D space, and save your Maya scene as a .ma (ascii) file that After Effect can then import. What this means is that you can then import a Locator/Null that will have 3D keyframes you can then tie to the Particular emitter! You may already have a better solution, but it felt like the least I could do in appreciation for your generosity. Big Ups! by jhun rey 08/02/2010 it hurts.. i dont have the PARTICAULAR effects T_T by DANIEL 07/13/2010 I just wanted to point out that what you´re doing is great. I know it is a marketing tactic from Videocopilot, but still, giving out this high end tutorials for free is worth a stading ovation. You have a knack for teaching, and throw a little humour here and there to make it more watchable. I used to have Chad Perkins as my number 1 AE teacher, but now you have surpassed him. Anyway, thanks a lot, to you and your bosses here at Videocopilot.net for all this incredible knowledge you´re letting us have. Have two particle layers (one on top of the layer that you want to obscure it in 3D space and one below) and set a keyframe on the birth rate to where the bottom one stops producing when it's supposed to go in front and the other one starts producing when it goes in front. This should work with most particle systems/ plugins, but not all. by ukgoodfella 02/12/2010 I was very impressed with your tutorials for the streaking effect. I do have a question and that is can you show us in another tutorial how we can make the streaks go behind people in 3d space, i think this would give it a better sense of Realism..... I'm learning now, from your tuts how to work in AE, but I do have some background in 3DMax. Question: Is it posible to make the particles to work on a path ? Isn't more easy to draw a path on X,Y,Z then asign particles to fallow path ? This is how it works in 3DMax, isn't posible here too ? From: Afghanistan! by Ahmad Rishad 10/30/2008 Hey, Thanks Guru for such a great tutorials! From: Afghanistan! by L8yde 10/23/2008 Great tutorial....amazing. But i want creat simultanious many streaks... how can i do it? i tried it but the first streak disappeared...why? PLEASE HELP by Matt 10/12/2008 O Tee and Edward: I to was struggling with this - then I realised even if you adjusted the path of the particle emitter then you would still have a problem in that once the particles were drawn they would stay where there we drawn. We need to be able to move them after they already exist. The solution - Simple Just parent the Particle layer (the solid with particular applied to it) to a null layer which contains your tracking data. You may need the solid to be bigger than your comp now so nothing gets get of and the layer is moved with the motion track. by O Tee 10/04/2008 I also would like to know how to use this with footage that shakes a bit. It does not look good when the streak is static and the background has a slight shake. Tracking does not work because it sets the keyframes where you place your light streak keyframes. by Adrian 10/01/2008 Hi!!! I love your tutorials, I like learning myself everything I can, but I was stuck with AE for a long time, and very few people studying in Mexico have good notions of it. Probably because of you I will get a good job, haha, thanks by DIR. GABRIEL HART 09/28/2008 PUTTING THE "LIGHT STROKE BEHIND YOU" It took me some time but I figured it out. The object that you want the particles to go around must contain a some alpha around the object. Take that object and pre-compse it. Then place the comp. under the particles layer. Under the particles effects controller and go under the Visibility tab and change the "Also Obscure with" to all. P.S. There is NO the 3d mask by kulwinder Talwar 09/28/2008 Great...awesome...tutorials.....really im ur big fan sir...and ur tutorials help me out a lot....and u r my ideal person...thnx sir by Korean 09/23/2008 axesome by AronD 09/19/2008 It is amazing how you teach, pretty exciting and makes wanna be an FX man. by Scalon 09/18/2008 How can i link the null object to a path? Like if i want to "write" with the light. Thanks by Edward 08/30/2008 ookk..forget my comment above, I just played with the "particular" options and found "Size", lol, sorry is just that I changed that one before, but didn't notice the render was still applying, this effect really takes a little render time and having some other effects in the comp, well now I understand the usefulness of "motion preview" ..except not so much for the size you don't notice that without "full render" :p, again Andrew, thx a lot for the teaching, you get that a lot, but really thank you. by Edward 08/30/2008 Hi, awesome tutorial as always, maybe my comment is a little old, but as some other people I was wondering how to have more control over the movement, and in my case, the SIZE of the light, cause I used some motion tracking to follow a path for the light, and linking it with a Null object is perfect, but now the problem is I'm getting this tiny light, in which you had the same problem until you zoom into the Z axis...which..if I do that, or scale up the "particle" layer I loose the perfect trace in my BG footage, and that's no good..I've try linking back with an emitter, but seems I have same problems...so....any help here? thx! and keep on that nice creativity =) by JP 08/30/2008 Hey Andrew that was great...awesome tutorial really liked it I was wondering if you could create another tutorial where those light~streaks move with the camera to the next scene (not through 3D live action) Thank you once again by mixakoatlh 08/26/2008 Great job man, i really apreciate that you make this tutorials, thanks a lot, i'm gonna try to get your products soon. by Scalon 08/26/2008 Hello Andrew. I was exercising trough this tutorial, and i was wondering if there's a better way to make the light streaks path more advanced. The null object is a little restrictive in doing some more fluid movements. Maybe a light streaks 3 tutotial. :D Thanks anyway for this great tutorial. All the best by nicholas 08/21/2008 Great tutorials..would be totally lost with out them...even beter that there all within one link..just bought some products from you..well worth the money i payed for them...any way keep up the good work and keep them tutorials coming...what matt lewenski is to photoshop you are to after effects by Target 08/16/2008 Thanks, though my AE crashed when I had a nice begin>.< by vif 08/14/2008 ?????? by Sebas 08/14/2008 Im using the lightstreaks to streak across streets of my city. Can you sand me 2 of this plugin If you can your next tutorial can you come out with Plugin?. Thank you very much Good to hear from you... by zzz 07/18/2008 nice ![]() by Laurence 07/17/2008 @Edd: If I'm reading your description right (and I like to think that I am), this is one of those occasions when the not-quite-3D of After Effects catches you out. While it appears to move in 3D space, the particle layer is essentially a flat object, so it will either go behind or in front of your keyed-out person - not both. One solution might be to rotoscope a mask so that it obscures the particle layer at the times when you want it to appear as though it's behind the subject. Could be a lot of work, though. Throw On mail Nyger@mail.ru by Anto 02/29/2008 Hey Andrew! You're hands down the number one on the net!! I have a question for all of you posting here: I'm trying to work with multiple streaks...I thought I could duplicate my "particular" layer, keeping the relationship with the null, and offset it in the timeline to use it as a second streak, but it doesn't seem to work...any suggestions? Thanks a lot :) by Joshua Carey 02/28/2008 Mr. Kramer, I found this video, and I thought you might find it interesting. It's an official music video for Simple Plan featuring a few familiar elements. When I watched it I noticed that the light streaks looked very similar to the ones in this and in the previous tutorial. You'll also notice paint splatters from your Riot Gear product. I'm fairly familiar with them as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mn_dUR7IX-A check it out and let me know what you think. by Martijn from Holland 02/28/2008 Hey Andrew ! Inspires me every day... For interacting with other 3D layers, try to add an "obscuration layer" in Particular. This seems to work only for one layer by Eirik 01/17/2008 Hey Andrew! I've watched all your tutorials, and yet, somehow, you manage to come up with a new and different tutorial that amazes me and everyone else every time! Thanks! Keep up the extremly good work! :) by Mick 01/14/2008 Tommy, Been working on this myself, I have found that having your 3d layers above or below the particular layer determines if the stroke is in front or behind. It gets difficult when you have numerous layers as I found out whilst doing a 3d montage. I'm sure there must be an easier way? This is my first post Andrew, only found your site by chance and I must say what you do is fantastic and very generous. I have already purchased one of your products. Please can anyone help me thanks Akhil by rafael ski 12/22/2007 i'm a brazilian guy, and i really like your job. You're the Man! by Joshua Carey 12/12/2007 I have a pretty good idea as to how to get it to go behind objects and such, however, I have the dilemma of using a moving camera shot. Could you please explain how I would get the stream to stay where it started, and move with the video, as if it were flying in the shot, and the camera was following it? I was wondering if you would need to track something to make it stay in place, but, with the moving shot that I'm trying to do, nothing can be easily tracked, since nothing stays in the entire scene. Please let me know if you come up with any ideas. by Rony 12/10/2007 Hi Andrew, as krycek mentioned http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhS7c-IhX0U probably it's made with particular as you showed us the method in this tutorial. now my question is, how can we achieve that kind of smooth curves? i don't know whether you check these comments or not. but if you check please answer this one. i'm sure maximum of us will like to know. thanks for all of your tutorials. by FX Lover 12/09/2007 I love you. by ahmed elbadry 12/09/2007 i`m really really thank you and i still consider you my inspire teacherby Guy 12/08/2007 Great tutorial ! I went a step further and set an obstruction layer so the stroke appears to go behind it. BUT.... How in the world do you get it to go behind and in front, essentially circling around multiple objects in 3D space. You can do this with the 'stroke effect' on a 3d solid but it looks flat.
