To Chris, the commenter below, about the sprite issue.

Newer versions of Particular don't have the "custom" option, they instead have the "sprite" option. To complete this tutorial select "sprite", then go down to "texture" and expand the menu. There you will see an option called "layer". Simply select your layer from the drop-down menu and everything should work just fine.

great tutorial andrew howeve i first had problem that the 'custom' was not there but with a little googling i found out that it is'sprite', however i still havent managed to make the custom sprite work.. anybody else facing this?

In what version of Particular was it made? I don't have Custom shape for particulars in my 2.0, other options don't give such effect as in tutorial, it just put a few images that I made with sticks... (

Wasn't on Active Camera View, was on a different view. Meant the Adjustment layer wasn't being previewed. All good now.

For some reason, I'm not able to use the adjustment layer to add the effects such as colour and glow?

I can make the adjustment layer, add the effects, but they have no consequence on the image. I'm using CS4 with particular v2 on a Mac. Any ideas?

man you're great. but i have this problem. i'm using version 2.0 of trapcode particular. i think this version does not have that custom type of particle that's why i can't make a custom shape. what can i do to make my light streaks?

i'm using trapcode 2.0. did as told using sprite > texture etc. the effect isn't the same as the light streaks shown in the tutorial, it's more dispersed.. is there any way i can obtain the light streaks by using trapcode 2.0?

i have a request/question about the movement of the line that you created, i know that you can make it move randomly, but can you show me/us how to control the movement. i ask this because whenever i try to do this it doesn't curve, and when i try to curve it myself, it doesn't turn out right.

Great tutorial, This works with the FREE particular demo from trapcode.
And for those with 2.0 as said before there is no custom option, you'll have to use sprite, then you can select the layer under texture and you can choose for start at birth - stretch

i have a little problem. my trapcode-->particular won't let me set a custom particle. I made one but when i go to Particle type or whatever it is it has no 'Custom'. I am using particular version 2.0.1. Thanks for the awesome tutorials Andrew.

Just rename the light "Emitter" after you get the error. It's case sensitive, so capitalize the "E".

If you want to change the name of the emitter go to the options tab at the top of the Particular effects panel. Type in what ever you want and rename your light(s) layer the same.

Sorry Gnat but this site is an amazing privilege how the hell could you complain with this much top of the line free knowledge at your finger tips.

I think you should put a big disclaimer on the tutorial page saying, "you must spend another $300 in order to do this tutorial" because, dude, I already bought your software, and I see all these great tutorials, and I think I can do them, and then I find you have to have another set of software? BOOO!

Fore those of you, using Particular 2:

Particular Type "Custom" is now changed to "Sprite" and the "Custom Layer" you´ll find under "Texture" - Layer...

What about Trapcode 3D Stroke?

Yo, TrapCode's Particular v2 has no "custom" particle type. However, i found out that "textured polygon" works quite well instead of that... you might wanna add a note to others out there =)

How come when you talk about bringing the "particle_50" then going to particle type then you have a custom button.....but how come i dont have a custom button?

I think, Instead of alt cllick the stopwatch and making the wiggle(.5,100)
you click the stopwatch and move it around and remember to move through time as well.

Here's one way. Let's say your layer with the stroked path is called "Stroke Layer". Copy the mask shape for the path and paste it into the position parameter of your follower layer. This should create keyframes that cause the follower to trace out the path over a 2-second period. Then just add this expression for position to sync it up with the animation of the "End" parameter of the stroke effect:

percent = thisComp.layer("Stroke Layer").effect("Stroke")("End");
valueAtTime(2*percent/100)

This is so irritating,
I did everything Andrew said but you cant see the light at all, you can only see the little two arrows following where the light is but no light. By the way if this helps I have CS4 and when I put the effect on the "Particles" solid and the put the option "light" it says:
"In this mode lights are used as particle emitters. Only lights whose names start with 'Emitter' are used. Creat a light with Layer>New>Light.

To change the name 'Emitter' open Trapcode Particular's Option box."

when i play my clip on the preview screen of after effects, the clip would play, but it keeps stopping or pausing evry like 2 seconds, it does not play straght through the clip. Does anyone know what the prblem could be, if so is there a way to fix it?
