OK another great tutorial...but i have one major issue....
I wanted to take this effect...write something on a wall....add motion tile to that wall so that theres more room to work with....then after the writing is finished have the way behind it shatter with the shatter effect. Now i have spent all night trying to figure this out...ive tried everything I can think of to pull this off....but it seem when ever you add shatter to anything that has motion tile on it...everything goes completely haywire. Especially when you try to tell shatter to use the comp camera...grrr. If anyone knows a way to pull this off please let me know...cause i dont think there is a way personally...i cant think of anything i havent tried....including making multiple copies of the wayy by hand and mounting them in place...as soon as shatter has you switch to comp cam they all go away but the one the effect is one...or they just poof...or shrink to half size...its aggravating as hell especially how easy this should have been.

good tutorial. it was easy to follow and make. i have a question though. i have bought the riot gear stuff. i am using Adobe After Effects Cs4 and i cannot import the .MOVs from riot gear. could this be caused by the fact that i dont have quicktime installed? i did try to convert the .MOVs to AVIs but they did not import either.

For all the people who don't know how to install fonts:

Installing the font is done outside of After Effects:

- Go Start>Control Panel> Fonts
This will open a new window

- Press File>Install New Fonts and then navigate to the folder you have the font file in.

- Click Ok and it should be done. It should now show up in the fonts list for After Effects and every other program that uses fonts.

For everyone who wants to know where to put the font...
If it's a TrueType font file, you put it in C:\windows\fonts, and then it will be in your Adobe applications (assuming, of course that your OS is a windows one). If it's not, try to find it on www.dafont.com, and it will most likely be there. If it's not a TrueType font file and you can't find it on dafont.com, try to put it in the "fonts" folder anyway and see if it works.

Great tute, I'm really a flash developer but want to go down the after effects route as it so much more powerful and would love to integrate the two. Got the mask working and tried to export to flash thinking that it would be vectorised as the text is vector and the stroke is vector. No wall included :) However the mask did not output. the only way I could create it is as bitmaps which I don't want to do. I have seen other people do this such as "fake pilot" - love his work too. Any ideas how I can do this as I have searched fruitlessly on this topic but believe that it must be able to be done some way. By the way, love your work and think you are doing a great job for the after effects community :)

Very nice tutorial

This tutorial was very helpful. I didn't use it exactly as you did but i took wehat i learned and made it look like someone was writing on a peice of paper and then scribblining out the results before moving to another part of the paper.

I'm using it for an upcoming short.

Hey. As everyone else, I also love your tutorials.
I have a prob with this one. When you like.. mark the text with the pentool.. erm.. well that doesnt work when i do it. If i have red text, then uses the pentool - the pentool makes big red marks after it.

Hope you understand.

First time i opened After Effects and i exercied on this tutorial...this is my final result,i just used other pictures,that i found on google,than the one used here...once more great tutorial it took me about 3 to 4 hours to manage it
