545 RESPONSES TO "EARTH ZOOM"

by Mehmet 5 hours ago
Hey, I have a problem. When after the first part, when parent all layers to layer 1 and scale it to %0.0005 i see my composition background instead of world view. I realised that when I change the scale of layer 1, layer 8's scale doesn't change. What should I do?

by Steve 11/03/2009
If you've ever seen the tv show The Big Bang Theory this exact effect was used almost identically on season 3 episode 5 at the very end of the show and I have a strong hunch it was created using this this tutorial.

Hey. Everyone keeps asking: "Where do you get the images from?"
As for me I don't know where he got the high resolution images from. What I use is google earth for the in close pictures and NASA World Wind for the farther away pivtures(State and country). I use Wisdom-Soft ScreenHunter 5.0 Pro to capture the picture because after you can crop out anything you dont like. On google Earth it has all the writing at the bottom which you can crop out and on NASA World Wing it has the tool bar. Both have the top window and bottom window. Just use sreen hunter. Crop and your done. I don't know about the high res screens though
People asking about maps can also try http://flashearth.com
Hey guys! the images: from google maps (not google earth!!!)

by Jojin Kang 09/25/2009
Great tutorial as usual Andrew, I guess you are always pressed for time doing 100's of these tutorials but I would go one step further and go through each layers and fade out them out completely as they get too small to be noticed. that way you wont notice colour difference when they contrast like in the last 2 shots.

thanks for your tuts mate, you got me interested in after effects. Something I never thought much of before.
by Tulio 09/23/2009

by madhu sanjel 08/31/2009
Love the tutorials. Congrats on the new addition.
Also curious where one would find photos of this high a resolution?
Also, what would be the procedure of reversing the effect where you come from space and zoom into a street... but then, add in a motion shot of a person looking up, as if to start a story of such a person? Which is what I'm now wanting to do. I'm sure I've actually seen this somewhere actually?
by boryst 08/30/2009
hey guys. i love the tut. worked great. the only problem i ran into was that i want the planet image at the end to be centered in the frame. so the beginning is centered at my house but then when we are in space looking at the earth i want the planet centered. any ideas?

Hello there,

first of all, I want to apologize for my bad English.

Last week, I was watching TV and during the advertising I was zapping around. I found sth kinda funny on the German Channel "Pro-7".

They have a stupid Casting Show called "Sommermädchen 2009" (Summergirl 2009) and on this day, the finale was on air. They used this effect here. But not just this effect...

EXCELLENT!
THANK U!

Hey people,

I was working on this effect, and had the same problem with the scaling, with the black screen showing instead of the Earth image, however, I found an easy way to (sort of) fix this. For some reason AE doesn't recognize any value below 1 for the scaling. What you want to do, is the following:
- Just leave the black screen when you enter 0,0005%, which will be changed by AE into 0,0%, and go on with choosing the exponential scale.
- You will notice that the black screen is gone and the earth image is visible. However, the earth looks very tiny, which doesn't looks very nice (however, that's just my opinion). If you check the scale at the end of scale-animation, you will see that it has the value of 0,0001. Also, if you go through the whole scale-animation, you will see that the Earth will 'shrink', but stops 'shrinking' while the exponential scaling hasn't even ended yet.
- What you want to do, is search the part where the Earth has the size as you wanted it to be. The next thing you have to do, is deleting all the keyframes that come after it. If you have done that, and you check the whole animation, it will stop at the right moment.

This worked for me so far, I hope it'll help you guys. Good luck

P.S. I'm from the Netherlands, so please forgive me if there is any bad spelling in my comment (I always like to keep it clean, I know how hard it is to read when someone writes unreadable stuff with lack of dots and stuff.)

Note: Some details about the outcomes as I described it (like the tiny Earth), could be different than others, because of the sizes of the PSD's you use, etcetera

Note 2: With 'sort of fixing', I ment that when you will fix the problem with the scaling, the stuff like time will slightly change, so if you made the animation last 10 seconds in the first place, it will end up lasting 9.1 seconds or something like that.

by Garrett Phillip Montgomery 07/23/2009
Great tutorial. I was able to get decent photos out of google earth. What would make it even better is to combine maltaanon's tutorial for 'Advanced 3D Planets' (created with CC Sphere).
http://maltaannon.com/articles/after-effects/advanced-3d-planets/

Although I don't know how the heck to do it because my last layer (Pre comp of 3D spinning planet) would be spinning. I start zooming out from downtown LA and then end up in Africa. Any suggestions on how this can be done?

Just like code said:

"alright, i just wanted to let everyone know that the best solution i have found so far is to parent every layer to the last layer (earth) and then, starting with the scale of that layer at 25 million, keyframing it down to 100. i can see this causing a lot of problems and it definitely isn't perfect. that being said, i could still use some advice on this one."

This method works but it's extremely slower and less user friendly.

I had to move my anchor point up to a 0.00001 precision (my project is kinda bigger than the one in the tutorial)
by JBL 07/12/2009
I got the same problem as Olli,

"Hi. Thanks for that great tutorial.
Still i've got a question:
Wenn i connect all Layers to Layer Nr. 1 I just see a Black Window.
If I Scale Layer Nr.1 at 100 I can see the right Picture, but if i scale it up and down i can't see the other Layers. They are not connectet any more.
Does any of you know why this is happening.

by rjwesten 03/29/2009
I was having the same zooming issues as I've seen posted here. The problem is the anchor points. I had 15 layers and when I ran a small test (5-7 layers) it was fine .. once I got above that it didn't work. It was the Anchor points on layers 8-15 .. I had to reset those maunally to be the same center as the rest and that took care of it :)
by Stan Arthur 03/29/2009
I used this tutorial to create my own earth zoom-out that is the final sequence in my latest documentary about a group of law students who tour the deep south in a bus. In the final scene, the students walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, the site of one of the bloodiest attacks in American civil rights history. The scene ends with an aerial shot of the bridge, then zooms out to reveal the planet and a quote by Howard Thurman. It's very effective. Thanks, Andrew.

First and foremost, THANK YOU!!! With a program as extensive and powerful as After Effects, there is NO WAY I would ever even come close to learning this stuff without these tutorials.

I'm working on AE CS3 and the expression you used for the shaking effect would not take. That was the one and only discrepancy I ran into. Anyone know what's up with that?

Also, to get the images, I used Google.com's map search. Just make sure all the labels are off. If you're on a PC, you should be able to use the Print Screen option to take the screencap and just trim it down in a photo editor. I'm on a Mac and had to use the Grab app, not from Safari's menu but from the applications folder, and captured by selection. I ended up taking about 18 of them, one from each zoom level. I'm quite content with the finished product, especially given that it was my first attempt. I didn't line up the layers perfectly, but with the motion blur and at the speed at which it zooms out, it was hard to identify.

Again, thank you so much for these tutorials. I'd have a very expensive hard drive occupier without them.

Hey guys the pictures he uses in this tutorial didnt come from google maps. if you see the rotation and the side lights of the buildings you will see they are offset to google maps. i dont still know where he go his maps from. "would like to though".
by anjel-2k 03/20/2009
these pictures as far as i know are not from google maps. If you take a look at the Transamerica pyramids in google maps it has a different height and rotation offset to the one he uses in his project. still dont know where he got it from though.

and, i saw exactly the same shot at the CeBit (maybe you know)
I didn't remember which brand it was, but i was really surprised to see a shot, which I created in After Effects

And Andrew, you're awesome ;)
by Adrian 03/05/2009
Awesome tutorial. Did it once and was fine, now trying with different images and half way through when i test all images parenting to the first image, they all disappear leaving tiny block in the middle - has anyone else had this? Really annoying, is it because i'm scaling out too far?

Hello there Andrew.
I like ur style, realy nice tutorial.
Helps a lot to get into Affter Effects and stuff.
Keep on going....
by FCP Wizzard 02/09/2009
if it's a reversal of this effect you are looking for it is a simple as putting the finished QT or AVI into you editing software and reversing the clips playing direction. You will need to render this out but a quick and easy way to do this.
Also as far as hi-res images to make this happen, use google earth for your wide shots whole earth ect. Once you find your ending point record its exact position using longitude and Latitude and then get the last few close up images using the same long/lat as for your wide shots. Google earth start to turn the camera as it gets real close. Easy as that.
great tutorial though.

I seem to be having quite alot of difficulty getting this to work, I'm not sure if it is because I am in CS3 or if I have instaled a plug in incorrectly but once I have gone through, linked all the layers and then when I get to the stage where I relink everything to layer one and go, set layer one scale to 100, I am then unable to zoom in and out, even though the layers are parented it seems as though they are not connected and the scale only seems to change the properties to that one picture.

Please Help

Loving these tutorials been trying loads but I'm having a problem with this one, Instead of having the globe as a picture, I've got a texture (used from the 3d planet tut) which I've used the cc sphere plugin but when I try and parent all my layers to layer 1 so I can sort out the scale everything dissapears! This only seems to happen when I'm using the sphere plugin. Any help is greatfully appreciated!! My final aim is to zoom out from a point on the earth and then rotate the globe with stars etc etc. (basically linking the two tutorials together)
by Kenswift 01/20/2009
Bad ass. I used Yahoo Maps and just put a mask over the sign in the very last frame. I actually did it in reverse, starting with the earth.

by joao 12/15/2008
hi andrew kramer, first of all i love this tutorial, thanks for helping me :D

my question to you andrew is how do you get those high quality pics, because i use google earth and i do printscreen -.- the best resolution i can get is like 900 X 600, and that doenst work with this tutorial, i thought the problem was mine but i tried with your pics and it worked perfectly

now i saw some comments here of people that dont want the zoom out, but the zoom in. My opinion is to make the video as this tutorial (zoom out) and then using a video editor software like Ulead video studio you can make the video play form the end to the begining so that will have a effect of zoom in :)
staw well

hi where i can download pictures for this tutorial? i cannot speake english good. . . :(
please send me link on meil where i can download ather pictures
by Bombasarkadian 10/11/2008
Great tutorial.

For Netty and everybody who is looking for good maps I'll recomend maps.yahoo.com
They've got hi-quality maps without visible mistakes (you can see them for example in Google Earth as many-colour sqares).

The only one thing is little plus in center (but it's preety helpful when synchronising layers)
by Netty 10/10/2008
Dear Andrew (or anyone who can answer me).

Where did you get such high-res map? I tried on Google Earth but it didn't work. When I zoom out (pull out) some areas are just meaningless colourful square pixels. Well, I'm talking about Thailand. I guess our satellites are not good enough, hehe. So.. if you would help me with this, I would be really thankful. (i'm a student and this is my final project. I'm trying to persuade my teacher to buy your products since we are starting to buy new things to our department).

Thanks in advanced,
Netty
by Mark 10/10/2008
Great tutorials, great techniques. Thanks!
by Dan 10/09/2008
PLEASE HELLLLLLLLPPPPP!!!!!!!
I've followed your wonderful tuto (I have AE CS3)step by step but I'm stucked on step when setting the scale of first layer to .0005%. When I do that, I get a black screen with a dot in the middle and I cannot see my planet earth layer!
I thought it could be a scale issue (I was using my own custom layers), so I tried several values: 0.05, 0.005, 0.0005, 0.0000005...... 0,12234567# and allways got the same dang black screen!!!!
I tried with the original layers downloaded from here and nothing! I set my composition to exactly the same values you did in your tutorial and NOTHING! I'm desperated, what am I doing wrong? >:8
I`ve noticed your 1rst layer position is "-0,0 -0,0" and mine is "360,0 240,0". Could be that the problem?
I've read all comments and noticed some have the same problem than me but anyone give even a clue about a possible solution...
Any goodhearted here? :'(

by MovieMaker 09/30/2008
Rage,
Give a moment when you zoom in , coz google earth takes fraction of minute to display the view, if you zoom in ,randomly.

Anzh,
You can get the pictures its not big thing.Google it.
by ANZH 09/30/2008
how did you get all the pictures?
by rage 09/30/2008
i 've downloaded google earth and it's a very cool software to use.
but i seem to have a problem....
when i zoom a place very deep the image become pixilated and cannot be seen....why is this happening ???
Andrew kramer got all nice images and did not seem to face this problem....all his images all well to be seen...even though the 3d buildings all very clear...

can someone tell me what;s wrong with my problem ?

by Muji 09/15/2008
To Leo, Jonathan, Stefan,
I've also had this problem. I can't understand why, but you can either make the last layer have like 10billion% zoom, or you can hide the first layer, and make it have like 10 million zoom. It works at least.

If anybody has a good answer how to fix this problem, please post.
by Henrik Willstedt 09/14/2008

by The Digital Prince 09/08/2008
Thank you very much Andrew... it was an excellent tutorial...

Anybody has some tips to generate high definition map image files? Since I intend to have a different location, I cannot use the one its available with the project files (SFO).... I tried it with google earth and image quality is not pretty decent....
by GuruMidge 09/08/2008
Great tutorial - we're all Kramer fans in our studio!
For people wanting hi-res sat images, try maps.live.com - They're high quality and you can turn all of the controls off around the edge, to get a bigger image.
I got a load from there - i just opened the page on the highest res monitor possible, then took a screenshot and cropped out the edge in photoshop.
When you are scaling in AE, each layer is 50% of the previous one - handy!
You also don't need any rotation, but matching the zoomed out one to the globe is tricky.
For the globe image, i just took the satellite image of the whole world, carefully cropped it and used CC Sphere to globify it.
Enjoy (and remember to credit microsoft for the images!!)
by Reeko 09/07/2008

Thank U Very Much Andrew!!
by Leo 08/31/2008
I have a problem that appears to be the same from posted by Jonathan 08/16/2008.

When I unparent all the layers and then parent layer 2 and followers, all the scale goes to 0% and nothing happens. I´ve tried some different ways and don´t have any results.

The only thing I could do was zooming out the composition for the hardest way, dealing with the superzoommed scale, like 3 million%, but I would like to learn the way you did, which is clealy practical and intelligent.

Thanks a lot man, you are a great guy. A big hug from Brazil.

hi
where can i get that great photos of the earth?
by Joedse 07/24/2008
My solution to the exponential scale problem is to copy the keyframes from the tutorial project file, paste it in your own comp. If you want to make adjustments be sure to use ONE of the original keyframes and make a new exponential scale. . .
by labrainc 07/23/2008

Gabil that's impressive!!!
Andrew thank you once again ... this one's one of my favorites. I'm having a little problem. I downloaded the Project folder so i could use your earthstill.png file. I imported it and did everything pretty much but when i scaled it out I noticed the white box around the earth (the .png file picture is actually a square, where the earth is) was still there. I know that box is supposed to be transparent but somehow it still shows. Can't figure out what to do. If anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it.

This is what I mean

Thank you!!

Hey if anyone could help me out with this I've been stuck on it for quite some time. Whenever I unparent and then re-parent all layers to first layer, All my images disappear except for the image on the first layer. Originally I was using 19 images, so I cut them in half to 9. I've done everything exactly as he does in the tutorial and can't figure it out. If anyone has any answers please help!

I have a question though for this tutorial, i have made the nifty smooth zoom with the Exponential Scale, BUT i wanna make some movement on the planet before the zoom starts, but the zoom start so rapidly, can u give me a hint how to make the zoom start real slow at the beginning?

Andrew.. this tutorial is just great!!!
By the way! EVERYONE having problems with the Exponential Function (meaning you have the option, but it's always grayed out) I figured out how to get it working.
This is what you do.
Instead of hitting the drop down triangle under the first jpg, hit "S" so it brings up the "scale" sub menu. add your key frames, then right click and Exponential Scale should be selectable. I don't know why it doesn't work with the drop down menu, but you must press S I guess..
Thanks again andrew!

by David 05/01/2008
I did the tutorial.. and learned a lot ! I found that on AE7.. after 5 digit after the coma, AE is unable to handle the numbers.. so it's possible to have some problem (when you parent a lot of layers and scale them.) Great work Andrew !
by Eugene 04/30/2008
Hi Andrew,
I am trying to recreate the earth zoom to fly into an aerial shot of a building from space... I have followed your tutorial up to linking all the layers and then unlinking them and then linking them all to the top (closest) layer.. now I go to give it exponential scale to smooth out the zoom and exponential scale in keyframe assistant is is greyed out!
any ideas?
Many thanks
by Dan 04/29/2008
Okay, I've done this before just like the tutorial showed and it worked just fine...now for some reason, when I un-parent all the layers and re-parent them to layer 1, all my layers disappear. Can someone tell me what I've done to mess this up?

I don't know about the high res screens though.

Hey Andrew, saw you at the AENY meeting the other day, thanx for the camera tracking insight. I got a question about this tutorial. I work for an agency that is always worried about getting sued. Where can i get good images that I can use for commercial use (even if i have to pay for them, preferably not of course)? I am also trying to convince them to buy twitch but need to get this first obstacle out of the way to make a case for purchase(s). Hopefully that will get you to answer my question sooner then later.

Hi Andrew, great tutorial again :D
people if you want to reverse the earth zoom, so zoom in on earth i think you just have start with scale at 0.005% and end with 100% insted of starting with 100% and ending with 0.005%. I'm not sure if it works.
i didnt try this because i had some problems with my pictures and im also an ae noob, but this seems quite logical to me xD oh and dont be mad if it doesnt work ;p
bye ppl

Hi Andrew, Thanks so much for the wonderful tutorials. I'm looking forward to go through all of them, and some of the products as well.

I saw this question repeating itself on this page but not sure what is the definite answer.

Where are the images taken from? It doesn't look like google earth. Especielly the picture of the full globe. where can I find this one? (i live in europe)

Thanks, Tal

Nice one, i am gonna try to do it as well

Oh since evryone is asking about where to get the maps from, its quite simple. just download google earth and turn of everything (there is some stuff in the left of the screen you can uncheck the boxes and evrything is gone Only problem is you cant use the whole picture, you need to use everything in the middle otherwise the stupid compass shows up.

Great tutorials by the way andrew, i love em! keep up the good work!

Hey guys! the images: from google maps (not google earth!!!). if you look close you'll see some google watermarks in that Footage. some watermarks seem to be hardly erased with Photoshop and the water of the sea is also tuned-up with PS. just the 2 last images of andrew's Footage seem to be from other sources. that's it!
Thx Google and of course Thx Andrew!!!

Instead of using motion title I just scaled the precomposed to 106%. This way the edges are more detailed

Where do you get the high res pics that are legal to use? The thing I don't like about google earth is that a lot of times the water near land is very boxy because the water is different colors.

by Rob Neal 12/31/2007
Yhanks again for a great idea Andrew, but sorry, this one hasn't been fully thought through. If you use a reasonable number of layers, each one parenting the previous, the scale range becomes, excuse the pun, astronomical. I used 16 hi-res images form Google Earth (Yes, they are good if you buy the pro version) - but when you come to clear down all the parents and point to the original, most of the scaling has zeroed out and you are left with a dot.

Any suggestions to this one? I am working on using an expression, but it's a bit tricky. If I figure it out, I'll post again.
Keep up the good work, and Happy New Year to you all.

by Jon Weimer 12/13/2007
Sweet video. Too bad it doesn't say where to get the photos. I don't want to use Google Earth, because I don't want to erase their watermark, which is there for a reason. Is there some legal source, like NASA? The tutorial is really of limited value unless you tell us where we can get similar high rez images.

It's 100% Google Earth.
I've searched the same house :D
And I've found it (looking similar!!)

The 2 - 3 Image could be Nasa World Wind..
Or Google Earth!

And the first one is just an Earth map from Google Image Search...

Thanks for the tutorial, Andrew. The steps are great, but what I like the most is seeing you're work flow.

I figured out how to get it to zoom IN to earth. Took me a while, but then a brick hit me in the head...ouch...and it came to me.

Are you ready?

Select the Earth Zoom 2 comp. Right-click and select Time and then Time-Reverse Layer! Instant reversal, that's easy to undo when you need to go the other way.
Here is my version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikts2-As3Ac

Thanks again Andrew - for the tutorials, and helping me learn to "think" in AE.

Now where'd that brick go...

I am really impressed with your work and with the speed you do your work. Just wanted to show my appreciation, keep it up. As far, the best tutorial-making-guy for after effects I've seen so far.

Easy to follow what you are doing but never slow. And always ending up with a superb result. Tried this earthzoom, took me an hour instead of your fiftheen minutes.

Keep up the good work and always interesting tutorials!

Good job!
by Ian 10/03/2007
If you need to get some decent photos, try Google Earth, you can remove all the road icons etc from the bottom left and you can save a picture. Sure you get the watermark but you simply use a feathering system on each photo like Andrew does and you solve the issue of the watermark. If you use the earth pic, just mask the bottom corner out. Simple 8P Enjoy!

Andrew just gotta say these tutorials are the best ever.

ive been using Macs since 1987 for print design and got into corporate film work 7 years ago and always shyed away from AE due to its complexity (so i though).

As i have CS3 suite I thought id have a go instead of using Apple Motion... wow... your tutorials have made me learn the basics of AE in 1 week. im now watching your tutorials and applying them to my projects and wowwing my clients.

The best AE learning site on the web, its just like having a teacher sitting here in my studio in Scotland, thanks again.

Hey guys, I really really need some help. This is a great tutorial Andrew, but where do I find still for my city? Thanks alot,
Brad
by Eelke 09/22/2007
Had some problems as well. After a lot of fiddling around, I discovered that the numbers behind the dot are probably so small, that my after effects rounded it of to zero. By adjusting the scaling the lowest layer up first, then unparenting and reparenting, it was solved.
BTW, an extra nice effect I discovered: put your audio files in the nested comp, that way the swoosh winds up and down gradually by the time remap effect.

Cheers Andrew, your tutorials are the coolest!
by Arek 09/21/2007
George, can you just record somebody on green screen from the position u want, and hten put em on there.

I'm sure I've actually seen this somewhere actually?
by Arek 09/20/2007
