Hey Andrew

Obviously, like everyone, I love the utorials, as well as everything else you do.

However, I am having trouble with this one. It works fine with any image, but I cannot seen to get it to work on text, or anything white.

That is, the "Hot stuff" layer in particular. Is there any way to get the same burning effect on something without colour in it?

very nice tutorial - very useful. I tried it on old vampire footage, but the problem is that I can't use the keying correctly though previous Day to Night Conversion. Imagine its all blue colored and I want only the actor to be disintegrated - is there a chance to get the same effect by using masks? Thanks for an answer.

Hey, I'm using opera and... when watching the videos, it's either really slow, or it loads slow and then gets to a part where it just stops and goes to the beginning. halp

Andrew, your tutorials are the best and I've seen quite a lot of them, but for some reason, this tutorial (disintegration) doesn't load properly. It only loads about 9 seconds, and shows the bar fully loaded. It doesn't load any more. Can someone please tell me what I should do.

As usual, Andrew, this was an excellent tutorial. However, your viewers should note that the disintegration technique only works for computer graphics. I tried disintegrating my boss and it didn't work; he's still alive. Bummer.

Also I bought the 500 sound effects you have and just got it today. but very disappointed because there is no sound effects like the ones you use on your movies! why? like the FLY.WAV for the zoom out of earth? where is that? and the for the suicide head shot training where is the gun and other sound effects you use for many trainings?

Awesome tutorial! I had one problem tho.. My animation was really short/quick. I think it's because you have your timeline set to frame and mine is set to seconds (or the other way around), so I made it too short.. How can I change that setting ?

i went throught the comments and found that andrew used a greenscreen...(slow net connection...:p)
well..that means u can have a matte of Sam..i think if the Effect is used on a normal layer with an animating circular mask...and a track matte of sam...i think Sam can be placed at the end of stake!!!:p
i ddnt try it though...just thinkin out loud...

Great job, this is the longest one I have watched ever. This affect is similar to the one in the new GI Joe movie coming out when they "burn" the Eiffel Tower. But its some supper corrosion where it green and awesome. nice ending too :)

I've been messing around with this trying to figure out why you can't add some effects to the "Hot Stuff" adjustment layer, mainly Curves obviously, and so far I don't know WHY it's coming up with the error, however when you deselect/turn off the "Displacement" adjustment layer, you are able to add and manipulate the Curves effect to the "Hot Stuff" adjustment layer.

However, unfortunately, once you turn the "Displacement" adjustment layer back on, you get said error.

Hey. For some reason I'm getting an error when I attempt to add "Curves" to the "Hot Stuff" layer.

I'm using AE 7 Professional.

Every time I add the curves effect to the hot stuff adjustment layer, I get an error that reads...

I've been getting this error with After Effects 7.

Error 25::237 curves returned and invalid Max_result from PF_Cmd_Smart_Pre_render.

For me this error displays after I add the SAM footage to the timeline, then try to create a second distegrate comp to add the other effects. Sadly it means I cannot finish this excellent tutorial.

Anyone any ideas? Or is this just not possible with AE7.01?

This doesn't specifically relate to this tutorial but...

I've been a video editor for many years (Avid and FCP - amongst others) but until recently hadn't played with After Effects. Over the last 6 months I've studied your tutorials intently - along with many others at CreativeCow.net and have learned huge amounts about how to do things in After Effects. My very first attempt at producing anything in AE was an animated 3D Puppet Theatre made from a few stills which became part of a programme I edited for the BBC (UK) which - after viewing - was chosen to open a Poetry Season on BBC4 and BBC2 (sounds dull I know!) but had great praise in the press. (I can't post a clip because of copyright issues but it's on BBC iPlayer "Ian Hislop's Changing of the Bard". It was very basic by your standards but pleased a lot of people, and it was down to the countless hours I'd spent watching the AE tutorials.
Every time I watch a new one I start hoping for a project which enables me to use it ! Thank you for sharing your knowledge - as I try to do but on a lesser level - and I hope you realise that it is incredibly appreciated.

this tutorial is great, I have one problem, though. Whenever I use the "Displacement Map" effect, it moves the whole image around and doesn't make part of it "fly away" the way it does for you. Is that a settings problem or am I just too bad to follow what you're doing after watching it for like 10 times?

its best way to improve animation film and short spot design....~i like it...andrew.

I love the look but got lost somewhere and it didn't work for me. I was trying without the grenade and trying on some Text and just couldn't get it to work. Oh well... Lots of steps to get right and the player wouldn't let me DL the video like I could previously so I had to start all over everytime I missed a step which was the biggest problem.

I really like what ur doing here so i also wondered if u could do a tutorial on SGA effects , like the gun laser blasts , The Gate ,forcefield and so on , i would really like to those kinds of things

i think the guy who made the comment about the burning from the inside out by using a radial wipe means by using an iris wipe. radial wipe isn't circular.

could you make it burn from the inside out if you used a radial wipe?

It is nice but really it is kinda look fake cuz human tissues doesn't burn like paper. u needed to add some real elements inorder to make appear more realistic. overall for free it is beyond good.

Booooring... It's like the very first After Effects tutorial I went through -- back when it was owned by CoSA. It's so obvious -- just nest 35 discrete particle effects and animated elements inside five precomposed compositions and wire them up with the pick whip and a handful of expressions, duh...

Actually, this is pretty freakin' sweet! But Sam must be getting pretty pissed by now, after the ways you keep killing him and all...

I remembered where I have seen some cool disintegration animation - from "The Chronicles of Riddick" at about the end of the movie where the blond necro walks into the fire storm (or something like that) and he dies pretty cool :)

You know, when energy wipe, soul removal and the healer tutorials were relatively new, and "great" I felt this site had lost it's peak.
However, with the fragment, the ring, the HUD and this, you're turning the "low" right back for me.

Excellent tutorial. There's some stuff I'd change to make it look a bit more crisp, but the point is I now know techniques to do this effect, so the crispness is for me to tweak. This tutorial is really kick-ass.

If you keep the quality up like this, this site will start needing ads. You know, not NEED them, but you'll get a lot more hits with tutorials like this.

Hey awesome tutorial, just wondering though could this effect be used for a car coming onscreen and traveling straight forward and have the effect of the car disintegrating from the front to the back?

This might sound really dumb, and it probably is but how do I change my standard anchor point position? In your tutorials the anchor point is always centered (for examle: at your text layers), but when I add a text layer, the anchor is all to the left. And repositioning isn't a solution because if I change the lettertype or type something different, the anchor point isn't centered anymore.

And thanks tutorial, your tutorials help me allot.

I went through the basic tutorials aswell, but this wasn't mentoined in any of them.

Sweet Tut.. I was starting to get a little dissapointed in Sam's performance lately (or the lack of it all together).. Looks like he was sneaking off to bad neighborhoods in the night coppin something... Like you said.. Lesson learned. HA.

Can you briefly explain the effect you did on the background behind the grenade?? Is that just the ny texture with some effects.. You stop and goto Sam.. And also... I dont know why Im having issues, but after I finished the tut, I thought it would be cool to implement it using the suretarget, so that it goes to target 1, disintegrates, and then to target 2, disintegrates. Can you just do the suretarget effect in the video input composition?

Loved it! I think you shoud start making tutorials that are like under 8 mins but still awesome effects - like that one thing you stared doing

As it has been suggested before, it would be a blessing to have a tutorial on when and when it's not entirely necessary to pre-compose in after fx. You sure know your software, but that's not what makes your tutorials inspiring, it's your creativity. Keep going (:

I don't understand why you deleted the effects from "Hot Stuff" only to add them back. Why not just change the blur to a small amount, then change the turbulence? Did I miss something somewhere?

Definatly the best tutorial to date. A lot of tips and techniques in this tutorial that can be carried to other projects, and as you said, it can be used for some excellent titles. Just waiting to see if anyone uses this for a vampire killing spree video :)

And continuing topic that RoidFree have started, I must say that same things happening allover the world. Just last week I saw Andrew’s stuff on street screen here in Russia. I guess it’s not a secret and for Andrew itself that people do that (like with other selling projects so even people who involved in graphic industry couldn’t notice it, cause they just not as famous as Andrew’s files). But what is pissing me of, that some of them lazy enough to not changing a little thing in projects files except the logo or title.

Another amazing tutorial, thanks. So much in this one. I feel the need for a tutorial on pre-composing still not clear on all the ins and outs of using it.

There was so much here. I do not say that as a complaint, but as an observation. There were layers on layers, and I am not meaning to play on words there.

I appreciate your two attemps early on to keep people following and not starting to fade. You probably could have used another one of those around the 30-35 minute area.

I really hope that people use the methods you have shown to come up with many new effects and that there are not dozens of people making an exact copy.

I will have to watch this a few more times, but more because my mind got excited with so many diff applications... and not because the lesson was dull.

Good Lord... very inspiring indeed. Excellent tutorial which not only shows what's possible in AE (via Andrew) but reminds me on how much work I gotta do to catch up to speed since I've been at this only a few weeks. Though I've been producing films and video games successfully, learning AE has been an absolute blast. It's fun to get up before the alarm clock goes off and continue the education with Video Copilot at my side. Appropriate name indeed. Thank you Andrew and Co.

Awesome stuff!! I wanted to let you know that you inspire all of us to the next level. Knowing the person you are you will enjoy this story but my personal opinion will be a lot like others. "WHY COPY AND MAKE MONEY ON IT". I was at opening day Phillies Game last week. The production company that does the Jumbo tron graphics has some of your stuff on there unless you were part of it. My question to you is? Whats your opinion about others stealing your stuff and making money on it? I own a small 3d/Motion Graphics/Graphic Design production company. I know I wouldn't be to happy if others are taking your project files to make money on it. thanks again for an awesome site and info.

Hey Andrew, did you see the movie "Knowing" yet? There is a scene about 35 minutes into the movie where a jumbo jet crashes. The shot itself lasted about 2 mintues and the special effects are AMAZING. Thought you might like a heads up in case you haven't seen it yet! Great job on the tutorials bro. God bless!
