andrew, i only started using ae about 3 months ago, and thanks to this site, my ftv teacher has told me im better then some of the students she teaches at uni, so thaanks maate :)

but just a heads up u can apply textures on there layer, you dont have to drag it onto the item every time haha

This is simple enough. in the c4d (r12) render settings you simply set the render options to a photoshop/AE type like PNG or TIFF and also make sure you have ALPHA CHANNEL selected before rendering your image/3d text
