Making the SABER Solid transparent

Postby meijer45 on 03/23/2016, 9:26 am

Hi Everyone!

Is there a way to save a frame of a saber animation and have it transparent instead of a black background? I have been fiddling for days and haven't been able to find the solution. Any help would be great! Thanks.

You can change the blend mode.

• Make a duplicate layer of Saber

• Apply the effect Tint (this may not be necessary, depending on your needs)

• Set bottom layer to Luma Matte

• If needed, apply Curves or Levels to top layer to "choke" the matte

In the Saber render settings dropdown you can change the Composite mode to Transparent as well.

Yep, Dustin is absolutely right. I hadn't looked through all the settings when I posted previously.

I am also looking for help concerning transparency. I am trying to make a transparent logo with no background. If I follow Andrews tutorial on Saber he just creates a composition and then adds the mask directly on the composition without any layer. I can do this but it makes a black background when I export it. If I use the transparency grid button under the preview window it sets it to transparent but then when I try to create a mask it just creates a shape layer and will not accept the effect because there is no layer. So again I create new layer and add an ellipse mask do all the settings and (as noted above) set render settings at the bottom of saber to composite:transparent and within AE it shows as transparent but then after exporting it. and then trying to use the rendered video imported into Premiere Pro to use as a logo. It shows a black background. I am trying to get ONLY the logo with no background to show in the right lower hand corner of the screen as you would see in a tv program with no background. Any ideas? Thanks.

Sounds like your the alpha channel is not being interpreted properly by Premiere.

Try rendering as Lossless with Alpha from After Effects.

Also, you can try: In Premiere, in the Project panel, right click on the footage. Go to Modify>Interpret Footage.... Go to the Alpha channel settings and try to adjust some things.

You MUST export to a format that allows an alpha channel. H.264 won't do this.
As Duncan says, Lossless With Alpha is good. I often export as sequential PNGs (with alpha), which can be really useful with complex projects where there's a possibility of a long render failing, or being partly ruined by a mistake or badly rendered frame. In these cases you'd only need to re-render the offending frames.
