Need tip: Rectanguar image to Square without crop

I recently purchased a template for After Effects and realized that any photos used in the project have to be of square dimensions. I have a lot of 5x7s and 4x6s that I want to use. I need some help/suggestions on how I can make the images square, without cropping, when the colors are inconsistent throughout the edges of the photo. What I mean is, sometimes in an image all edges are the exact same solid color and thus can be imported/pasted into a new image of square dimension filled to match the color of the photos edges. But when the photo has subjects from one end to the other, cannot be cropped, and does not have a solid color on the edges, what can I do to make it look smooth.

Example of an image that matches my scenario: http://s.orzzzz.com/news/9a/eb/564ed94586efc.jpg

I know that I could duplicate the image, set it as the background, stretch it vertically for landscape, or horizontal for portrait, and then blur, but this does not look very smooth when the image is supposed to be square like on a Polaroid.

Any Ideas?

Letterbox it with a solid bacground

Change aspect ratio by scaling

Extend background using mad Photoshop skills

All you got left, pick one and good luck.

Or change the template so the place holders are the same size as your photos.
