Animated cutting object from a box model

Postby nandoki on 01/12/2018, 10:28 pm

Hi,

I want to do animation with cutting out objects from a box model.
Here is a video where you can see what I want to do (1:41):

Is there any way to animate appear of cutting in E3D?

That's a tough one. I'd have to say no simply because I would never attempt it outside a non dedicated 3d program.

Element is fantastic but I personally feel too many people use it as a crutch for 3d work. Either way good luck. You may want to see what you could do using the animation engine.

I don't think the cuts need to be 3D, they just need to appear 3D. You can draw the lines onto a precomp with, say, trim paths, and use that precomp as a custom texture layer in Element. It should be relatively simple to make the cuts appear 3D. The first idea would be to duplicate the paths twice, offset them slightly and use two different colors for edge and bottom of cut. You could use a third copy as a track matte to hide the parts that go "under" the surface.

The paths might also be usable as motion paths for Element, although that would be rather complicated if it is more than a few cuts. I'm thinking using nulls with the paths pasted onto them as motion paths and then the nulls linked in a sequence.
